"Babalu's Wedding Day"!!!

uninspired girls rejoice!!! (Hoot Smalley), Monday, 9 November 2009 01:24 (sixteen years ago)

Otis Redding.

I yanked that sucker hard, and work it did. (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 9 November 2009 01:30 (sixteen years ago)

This is the strongest group yet imo. I almost voted Everly Bros. just now, but I'll think on it a couple of days.

WmC, Monday, 9 November 2009 01:38 (sixteen years ago)

Far from my favorite list -- too much stuff that has either always made me shrug or I never particularly need to hear again -- but then again, I don't think I've ever heard "Babalu's Wedding Day."

Voting "Get A Job"; Zep or Johnny Rivers or Elvis or Chuck second probably; then 4 Seasons or Everlys or Yarbirds or Stevie or Jimmy Cliff or Van or Drifters or Ben E. (a few of which I'd include among the "don't need to hear them again"s) or somebody.

Have always thought "Love Train" was pretty dumb (though I actually like the O'Jays alot, and sometimes totally love them.)

And I've never really cared very much for any Patsy Cline or Roy Orbison songs I can think of. Which I realize means I was probably born without a soul and will go to Hell when I die.

xhuxk, Monday, 9 November 2009 01:50 (sixteen years ago)

Yep, this is a strong group. O'Jays, "Get A Job", Drifters, Everlys, Orbison, R.Nelson, Van Morrison, J. Rivers, Ray Price, Zeppelin, J. Cliff, P. Cline are all strong. But "Suspicious Minds" stands with any Elvis single, even the Sun stuff, and that's why it's the winner here.

jetfan, Monday, 9 November 2009 01:52 (sixteen years ago)

Led Zeppelin tbh

I'm gonna put on an iron burt, and chase stanton out of urt (Curt1s Stephens), Monday, 9 November 2009 01:53 (sixteen years ago)

Suspicious Minds

kornrulez6969, Monday, 9 November 2009 15:18 (sixteen years ago)

Totally didn't see "Get A Job." Sorry Patsy but you have to understand that I go for urtexts/Greek myths/rivers from which all things flow/etc. over uncanny vocals any day. (Actually, sorry Silhouettes. If I get another vote...)

Kevin John Bozelka, Monday, 9 November 2009 16:31 (sixteen years ago)

Many songs I'm sick of, not one that I ever considered an all-time favorite (except for maybe "Rock and Roll" in high school; I'd now count it as no better than ZoSo's fourth-best song). Into the vacuum, "Suspicious Minds."

clemenza, Monday, 9 November 2009 22:21 (sixteen years ago)

I'll stand up here for Many Rivers, since I think Cliff gets jobbed in the Reggae sweepstakes. Love that croonin'. Makes everything better.

But yeah, great stuff, lots that I have fond jukebox memories of (Get A Job in particular, but also Secret Agent Man).

I know this is probably taking a fun idea two steps too far, but after these 40 polls are over, I'd like to take the top 3 or 4 from each one, 120 or 160 total, and repoll them in 3 or 4 batches. Then one final poll of the top 25 vote-getters from the semifinals.

WmC, Tuesday, 10 November 2009 00:37 (sixteen years ago)

"Suspicious Minds" over the Drifters and the Everlys. "Crazy Arms" makes lots of lists like this; I'd like someone to rep for it so that I can learn better what to listen for.

Automatic thread bump. This poll is closing tomorrow.

Otis, pretty much at random over about ten other overwhelming heartaches.

dad a, Thursday, 12 November 2009 02:21 (sixteen years ago)

Suspicious Minds.

Bloggers Might Ride (James Redd and the Blecchs), Thursday, 12 November 2009 02:49 (sixteen years ago)

"Love Train" or "Get a Job" if I'm not too lazy to scroll back up to the top and click one of them.

sw00ds, Thursday, 12 November 2009 03:47 (sixteen years ago)

Actually, probably Drifters. (Elvis in the running as well.)

sw00ds, Thursday, 12 November 2009 03:49 (sixteen years ago)

It's weird how "chunky" these sets are, where some polls it's nigh impossible to whittle things down, some have one or maybe a couple of obvious favorites and a lot of filler, and some have next to nothing worth really repping for.

too close for comfort

GO THICK AMOS! (jjjusten), Friday, 13 November 2009 00:37 (sixteen years ago)

Lol that's one of those songs that I've heard so many times since birth that I can't judge it on its own merits. Same with I Feel Good. Those just aren't even songs to me anymore.

retrovaporized nebulizer (â•“abies), Friday, 13 November 2009 01:07 (sixteen years ago)

I've been working my way through these on YouTube. So far my top picks are the Everly Brothers, Ann Peebles, and Zep.
