Merchants of Cool?

Anyone see this on Frontline episode "Merchants Of Cool"? It's a PBS show (American version of serious journalism, as it has no corporate sponsors). It will be airing again in the NYC area on May 1st. Watch it! It deals completely with the influence of media (especially music) and the whole idea of being "cool". It shows very clearly that people are very susceptible to media influence. One of the reasons I don't really consider violent, ignorant music a worthwhile interest. And the best thing about it, it was done very evenhandedly to allow you to come to your own conclusions, just by watching. "Rock" has never come close to the horseshit of Limp Bizkit, Insane Clown Posse or DMX. Check out the link. They're showing it in colleges and high schools everywhere in America and it was only aired a month ago.

Kevin, I think the answer is quite obvious: Me. Who do I think I am to be offended by offensive material?! I should realize that Bambi is just as violent as the issue of Rappages where they throw the german sheppard into oncoming traffic and laugh about it. Shit, that's cool. What was I thinking?

one thread about this goddamned obvious program was enough from you. fuck off.

Ethan, you know, you don't have to attack me based on your own assumptions and I wouldn't feel compelled to point out the weakness of your convictions. Something tells me you like all this kind of rap and don't want to hear any crap about it. That's fine. I didn't demand people stop listening to it or ask for it to be outlawed. So, you've seen this goddamned obvious program? What was your favorite part?

*sighs* I can't believe I'm doing this.

Could you guys please just start ignoring this guy? You're doing exactly what he wants and the more you go on about it, the more aimless, meandering threads about the exact same thing he's going to start. We're talking someone who, to presumably open discourse as wonderfully as this has, STARTED on this message board with a thread taking the piss out of everyone as jerkoffs and posted someone's personal mailing address in the bargain (link posted because it was ages ago and I think it's only fair that newer people who think "neuromancer" is even a semi- serious contributor should see it). So could we please pretty please just ignore him until he starts taking his pills again? His recent threads are easy to sort out - they're the ones who don't have names next to them, since he doesn't post a name or alias, just an email.

Apologies to Tom, Josh and Nicole for posting something that could quite possibly be construed as a flame. That's me signing off yet another thread and moving to the next, and I sincerely hope that the people who are honestly getting annoyed by this joker take my advice and just ignore him. He'll get sick of it eventually and will either fuck off or calm down. Either way, mission accomplished. Thanks, and again, sorry...

Ally, I'm not taking the piss out of anyone. My initial thread was a joke, as I did not really assume you were all "pop elitists". And I thought it became pretty obvious. That is completely different from what I'm saying currently: that I won't give my money to a hate monger, even if he happens to throw in an occasional "happy song". What's wrong with that? I have no hatred for any race or class, just the ignorant... and that's not even really hate. I would rather help the ignorant than anything else. But where do you start: "Hey, guy, don't you know that ideas can seep in your head before you know what hit you? How do you think racism starts? People aren't born that way. Just because you were born poor, doesn't mean you can't achieve. How many rich and famous people were actually born that way?" You can't say that to anyone in real life. I will easily concede that not all rap is a bad influence, but I don't prefer it over rock. Is it selfish of me to have an opinion or is it selfish of you to deny me one? And you can't really call me ignorant for saying most rap is about negative subjects because it is. Got it?

Holy shit! Thanks for posting that. I was cracking up! That was true comedy. This is nothing like that, though. Seriously. I don't think I've accused anyone of being a tosspot douchebag with blackrimmed glasses lately or a chinless, jugeared stomach-eater (how can you not see the humor in that?) I actually am trying to make valid points and am met with a general "deer in the headlights" kind of stare from most. "Wow, I can't believe he's actually saying these obviously selfish, lazy people are selfish and lazy. He must be a racist." Isn't there some artist or group of artists you can't stand (probably for lesser reasons)?

There's nothing wrong with holding or expressing contrary opinions, neuromancer, but I don't appreciate the way in which you've been stating and defending your opinions here. You are inviting disagreement and continuing to be deliberately inflammatory even though it's now clear that you and a number of posters disagree. I would appreciate it if you would stop your posts on this topic, and I would also appreciate it if others stop responding to your posts on this topic, as response seems increasingly pointless given the conviction with which you've decided to hold your opinions.

No prob, Josh. Just trying to defend my chivalrous sand castle or whatever Momus would say. If I change my view, can I continually applaud the violence in rap music? That seems like it might be more acceptable here for some reason.

Ahem. Like I said, that will be enough. Thanks.
