.. but nearly gone!
You can still get 3" DVD-R's (and +r's), but the old alternate format CD is such that they are getting difficult to find.
20 mins of music per disc (i.e. one side of an album), or a handy manageable quantity of mp3s.
Well, I like 'em.
― Mark G, Monday, 9 November 2009 08:06 (fifteen years ago)
First CD I ever saw was a 3". I haven't seen one since.
― Ismael Klata, Monday, 9 November 2009 08:10 (fifteen years ago)
techno label rednetic recordings release eps on this format in cool little boxes.i love'em.
― mark e, Monday, 9 November 2009 09:52 (fifteen years ago)
Are they really getting difficult to find? I like them also, but you can't play 'em in Macs or cars.
― Cosmic Ugg (S-), Monday, 9 November 2009 09:57 (fifteen years ago)
only cd format that has any charm, you can buy some here www.cuthands.net
good label that...3" cd-r's are pretty common in underground/noise/drone circles..
they look great when packed in teh right cases, very charming little things

Anyway, 3"s are everything. business card size ftw

i bought a whole box of these 3" business card things... thought it was a great idea until i found out they only hold 2:30 minutes of audio..
― Deluxe Merseybeat Wig (Jack Battery-Pack), Monday, 9 November 2009 11:11 (fifteen years ago)
I bought a few releases from this seemingly defunct label http://www.discogs.com/label/Here%27s+My+Card+Records - one of them didn't play but compensated for this by flying about eight feet across the room when you opened the CD player to remove it

J.Lo Biafra?
*wins prize*
― Mark G, Monday, 9 November 2009 11:37 (fifteen years ago)
I had one of these--Bruce Springsteen "Chimes of Freedom" with some live songs tacked on. Didn't have an adapter tho, and sometimes the little disc would go bouncing wildly around.
― President Keyes, Monday, 9 November 2009 11:58 (fifteen years ago)
I have an "Anarchy in the UK" one, it's like a badge!
― Mark G, Monday, 9 November 2009 12:01 (fifteen years ago)
I had a few Here's My Card business card cd-r releases too and proved to myself that I was lol old by infinitely preferring the one which was generic SAWI-esque IDM to their meat+potatoes drill'n'misogyny breakcore styles
they looked nice though

There I go with my "stock aitken waterman" default...

My girlfriend's band has just released one: http://rarebreeddiscs.bigcartel.com/product/the-bon-bon-club-sex-on-fire
I have a few Ghostbox and Broadcast releases like this. I really wish this had caught on as a format.

cloudberry has put out lots of great stuff but unfortunately you have to sift through a lot of schmindie dreck to find it
― blue lightning disco (electricsound), Monday, 9 November 2009 22:06 (fifteen years ago)
oh and 3" cds are the best
The Jewelled Antler 3" series of releases is pretty badass.
― Trip Maker, Monday, 9 November 2009 22:09 (fifteen years ago)
I've got a Black Dice 3" and an Ashtray Navigations one, as well.Seemed like it was most popular in the noise set.
― Trip Maker, Monday, 9 November 2009 22:10 (fifteen years ago)
IIRC the Pinefox's band had something on that Cloudberry label?

― plaxico (I know, right?), Monday, 9 November 2009 23:24 (fifteen years ago)
Yeah I've got a couple of those Weepop ones.
― Colonel Poo, Monday, 9 November 2009 23:26 (fifteen years ago)
love these but always manage to lose them
― oh (skeletor), Tuesday, 10 November 2009 00:43 (fifteen years ago)
yeah most of mine are noise/experimental... Climax Golden Twins, United Bible Studies (two great ones), Ralf Wehowsky, all those Metamkine label musique concrete discs (the whole label was devoted to 3" CDs). Some stuff on Fire Records, Grouper, I forget what else. I have a little shelf just for them.
― sleeve, Tuesday, 10 November 2009 00:45 (fifteen years ago)
I have the Springsteen Chimes of Freedom EP too. Good version of "Be True" on that. Also have about 20 or so EPs in the IDM vein, two different series from two labels.
― Mark, Tuesday, 10 November 2009 00:51 (fifteen years ago)
I have a couple from Broadcast, one that was a Squarepusher bonus disc, and a couple others, some even non-Warp related.
One of my favorite nonstandard formats was a promo mix that came with a Sixtoo album on Ninja Tune- a readable surface the size of a 3" CD, brought up to the size of a normal CD by surrounding it with clear plastic:

The picture just makes it look white, but it's neat-lookin'.

that harp factory ep by gastr del sol is like that, but has writing around the edge. it looks pretty cool. the noton 20 to 2000 series had the same thing.
― an armada of q-tips (GOTT PUNCH II HAWKWINDZ), Tuesday, 10 November 2009 03:15 (fifteen years ago)
yeah I was just gonna mention those 20 to 2000 discs! I have them but I never think of them as 3" CDs since they are in regular clamshell cases stuck together with those magnets.
see also Muslimgauze's Ayatollah Dollar CD which has Arabic designs on the clear part.
― sleeve, Tuesday, 10 November 2009 04:24 (fifteen years ago)
As are the two CDs of one of the Autechre/Hafler Trio releases. Wish you could get blanks of those.
― Cosmic Ugg (S-), Tuesday, 10 November 2009 04:25 (fifteen years ago)
these were very popular when they were new. that first sundays single was a 3" cd and i have others by the mary chain and sisters of mercy. but a lot of them came with adapters and in conventional 5" packaging.
more recently the tomcats / isan release from http://www.awkwardsilencerecordings.com/ which have about 29 split 3" releases. and a few of those 'here's my card' things.
― koogs, Tuesday, 10 November 2009 12:00 (fifteen years ago)
most of the awkward silence releases are 45s.. only the last half dozen or so are 3" cds. most of everything they've done is great, shame they've gone so quiet
― blue lightning disco (electricsound), Tuesday, 10 November 2009 12:04 (fifteen years ago)
I have a couple of old ones - Groovy Train by the Farm and 2541 by Grant Hart.

did not know that about the awkward silence stuff. seems a bit.. pointless for them to do that?
