Best track on this year's Warp20 (Chosen) 20th anniversary Warp Records compilation

I've been playing this collection nonstop. All tracks chosed by fans on Warp20.net and Warp co-founder Steve Beckett. Here is Andy K.'s AMG review, for those who'd like a primer on this excellent set of tracks:

The component of the Warp20 box set spectacle directed at neophytes, Warp20 (Chosen) placed the track selection process in the hands of fans, who voted online with the option to add messages like "This song makes you feel like a proud parent, à la John Hurt in the movie Alien," as reprinted throughout the booklet. The ten tracks that received the most votes make up the first disc. After track five, the disc makes a swift transition from covering exemplary material (Aphex Twin's bent lounge-porn single "Windowlicker," Boards of Canada's eerie yet blissful "Roygbiv"), to looking more like a sampler of recent releases (from Plaid's "Eyen" to Clark's "Herzog," all 2001-2006 territory). The 14 tracks on the second disc were picked by label co-founder Steve Beckett. Unsurprisingly, it's more successful at showcasing the breadth of the Warp catalog, touching upon all the eras while bouncing between the well-known and unjustly neglected. Even if you've been aware of Warp's developments from the beginning, it's astonishing to see its history documented in a fashion that juxtaposes Sheffield bleep at its most thrilling (Nightmares on Wax's "I'm for Real"), acid techno at its most rigid (Mike Ink's "Paroles"), IDM at its most affecting (Autechre's "Drane"), and even progressive rock at its most dazzling (Battles' "Race: Out"). Available separately from the lavish box.

"All tracks chosen..."

My mistake.

I thought we already did this and LFO won.

It is kind of frustrating that he was on this clear upward trajectory up through the "Big Loada" EP and then suddenly started reading his press and turned into a smug self-satisfied dick who made crappy musoc.

(so bad he didn't even make "music" or "mu-suck")

Pretty sure he was a smug self-satisfied dick who made pretty crappy music (with an exception or two) all along.

the steve beckett disc is nice, the chosen-by-fans one a bit blah.

maybe it's just me but I personally cannot approve of a Boards of Canada selection that does not include "Turquoise Hexagon Sun"

I thought we already did this and LFO won.

We polled the top 25 fan tracks. This is the top ten fan tracks + the Steve Beckett curated disc (which is AWESOME).

Amo Bishop Roden vs Windowlicker vs Spangle I guess. I guess ABR may win some kind of compromise between "still actually listen to this a ton" and "still feel like there is more to explore in this track" (where Spangle does very well on #2 because of not actually getting played that much, and Windowlicker does very well on #1 and is kind of worn out for me).

speaking as someone who merely, you know, likes BOC as opposed to being a fanboy doofus, I feel like in a open-to-all poll like this one you'd pretty much expect 'Roygbiv' to end up doing well, cos it has by far the highest recognition factor (and is great) - and after that it's anyone's guess what they might rep for

Glad to see Paroles on this, voted for it. Mike Ink/Love Inc. was always dope. Does Mr. Voigt use those pseudonyms anymore? I guess they were mostly reserved for his house/techno productions, before he moved on to Gas and Kompakt and that sort of stuff.

Tuomas, Monday, 9 November 2009 22:21 (fifteen years ago)

I think this is a good comp in terms of diversity without being overly tokenistic (by which I mean hooray, nothing by Maximo Park got picked) and a lot of the most recognisable classic stuff is recognisable and classic for a reason

was gonna vote for my red hot car but got disheartened after reading thread

Discogs suggests the Mike Ink name has pretty much not been used for about a decade xxp

What the heck is that NOW tune though? You'd think they'd picked something from the first 3 albums?

Tuomas, Monday, 9 November 2009 22:27 (fifteen years ago)

It's the b-side to 'Aftermath'

I reflexively voted for the late-period Autechre, but Drane is fuckin' awesome.

I guess only former idm stans like myself still rep Bucephalus Bouncing Ball? Every other track on this list is "replaceable" in some sense ...

This part of the sentence is even dumber. (lukas), Tuesday, 10 November 2009 04:27 (fifteen years ago)

When the Nice Nice album finally comes out, you're all going to shit your pants.

I would be a very different person today if I had never heard "Bouncing Bucephalus Ball" back in 1997, so that.
