Nirvana - Live At Reading

If you have any lingering feeling for your old pals Nirvana you need to see this. Its colossal and invigorating. Don't know if the Bleach remaster and old concert is worth getting.

Hinklepicker, Thursday, 12 November 2009 07:16 (sixteen years ago)

I saw them in Portland in 1990. So I'm pretty intrigued to pick up that Pine St show.

Nate Carson, Thursday, 12 November 2009 12:22 (sixteen years ago)

I was just listening to that Pine Street show, I certainly think its worth hearing. Especially after hearing Reading and knowing the leaps and bounds that band took in between. Not necessarily sound-wise (they sound fantastic in the 1990 set), but in terms of popularity. Its interesting to listen to one and realize its a struggling young band belting it out in a small club, then pop in the other and hear a very similar aesthetic that had suddenly found its way into millions of homes and ears.

I got both the Bleach remaster, and this, and realised I have more time for them now than I did when I was 16, which was the last time I listened to them.

Josh L, Thursday, 12 November 2009 14:23 (sixteen years ago)

this is showing sometimes this month on that Music HD (i think it's owned by MTV) channel if you have hi-def comcast, i DVR'd it, have not watched

On this date in 2008, Soulja Boy said something (M@tt He1ges0n), Thursday, 12 November 2009 16:30 (sixteen years ago)

i'm a bit nervous about the bleach remaster--does it still sound as dark & heavy? cuz fuck a polished up version imo.

ian, Thursday, 12 November 2009 19:45 (sixteen years ago)

I don't really feel like its "polished" at all really, I mean it still sounds pretty scuzzy to my ears.

& other try hard shitfests (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Thursday, 12 November 2009 20:20 (sixteen years ago)

Gotta see the Reading concert. Probably will buy both of these things.

Trip Maker, Thursday, 12 November 2009 20:32 (sixteen years ago)

Yeah, no need to worry about it sounding glossed in anyway. I've only heard it through a couple of times, couldn't pick out individual differences yet; maily its just made me listen to the album again.
But yes - definitely still heavy, grungey, and dark.

Not to be a dick, but who could care about this at this point?

Alex in NYC, Friday, 13 November 2009 20:51 (sixteen years ago)

people who missed Nirvana the first time around

jazzgasms (Mr. Que), Friday, 13 November 2009 20:51 (sixteen years ago)

honestly, i kinda missed Nirvana the first time around

tylerw, Friday, 13 November 2009 20:55 (sixteen years ago)

yeah, i was serious!

jazzgasms (Mr. Que), Friday, 13 November 2009 20:56 (sixteen years ago)

Twenty-year-rule. They've almost done their time.

Ismael Klata, Friday, 13 November 2009 20:57 (sixteen years ago)

I think Endino did the mastering on the Bleach reissue. Also the Reading gig is pretty good,
endearingly sloppy in places, Cobain's voice veering about looking for the right pitch on
Sliver is especially funny, the only one let-down is the unfortunate re-appearance of Tony the
Bivouac roadie whose useless indie gonk 'dancing' goes on throughout most of the set.

MaresNest, Friday, 13 November 2009 22:00 (sixteen years ago)

"Not to be a dick, but who could care about this at this point?"

Like it's like Killing Joke. Just another stupid band that no one should give a shit about.

We call them "meat hemorrhoids" (Alex in SF), Friday, 13 November 2009 22:27 (sixteen years ago)

wasn't tony their drummer? xpost.

version of all apologies on reading lp is fantastic. in fact it all is. the dvd is really striking, too - especially compared to the visual overload of current festival performances with their high production values, it seems almost stark, but its really powerful.

Not to be a dick, but who could care about this at this point?

What 20 year rule?

Moka, Friday, 13 November 2009 23:36 (sixteen years ago)

For someone that drones endlessly about Killing Joke, thats kind of a dick thing to say.

& other try hard shitfests (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Friday, 13 November 2009 23:45 (sixteen years ago)

Nirvana made three studio albums. Killing Joke have made 12 and counting. Apples & oranges, man.

Alex in NYC, Saturday, 14 November 2009 03:25 (sixteen years ago)

So, two shitty bands. I'll give the nod to the one that made less albums.

I just wish he hadn't adopted the "ilxor" moniker (ilxor), Saturday, 14 November 2009 03:52 (sixteen years ago)

* fewer albums.

Please excuse my grammar, it's been a long week.

I just wish he hadn't adopted the "ilxor" moniker (ilxor), Saturday, 14 November 2009 03:52 (sixteen years ago)

My point (and I do have one) is that given Nirvana's relative paucity of material (shitty or not), haven't we beaten this particular horse well into the ground by now?

umm nirvana fans

Yeah they only released like 80 songs, but not all of it has been overplayed.. which is why their b-sides currently still sound fresh to me.

billstevejim, Saturday, 14 November 2009 03:59 (sixteen years ago)

The Beatles only released 300 songs and people still go apeshit for them.

billstevejim, Saturday, 14 November 2009 04:00 (sixteen years ago)

Alex, I might agree with you except for the fact that this is a really, really good live show. Though why they released the Muddy Whisker live comp instead of putting this out at that point is a mystery.

The music industry never lets a dead dog die. How many dozens of crappy Hendrix things have come out in the near forty years since his death, when his output was what - four albums?

At least this is damn good.

EZ Snappin, Saturday, 14 November 2009 04:05 (sixteen years ago)

That's a good point.. Seeing as how Muddy Banks was a shitty comp, this is essentially the first true live Nirvana release, which is totally worth getting excited about.

billstevejim, Saturday, 14 November 2009 04:12 (sixteen years ago)

Alex in NYC. Thanks for your comments.

In answer to your question.
I like the band so it follows I would like to see a concert which I haven't seen before in the hopes that it is good because I like the band and think they are good. Because I am already fond of the group I am hoping that something new will be just as good as the things that I had enjoyed previously. Perhaps I am a little greedy in wanting more enjoyment out of the group that I have already had many good experiences with but that's just crazy old me.

And who would care? I would suggest: People who like the band or perhaps have heard something about the band and are interested in 'checking them out'.

I would strongly advise though that if you DON"T care then perhaps you should not be investing your time in this DVD. Your decision to 'not care' indicates that some music by the aforementioned band which you have already stated you don't care about, would most certainly be quite a waste of time. Like for example I don't care for peanut butter mixed with jelly therefore I tend to not make myself sandwiches with this choice of spreads on. I prefer peanut butter on its own and certainly no extra butter. Why do people like butter with their peanut butter? It doesn't make any sense.

Hinklepicker, Saturday, 14 November 2009 04:12 (sixteen years ago)

So do you think the band is good?

billstevejim, Saturday, 14 November 2009 04:16 (sixteen years ago)

They are good.

Hinklepicker, Saturday, 14 November 2009 04:18 (sixteen years ago)

what's with the guy dancing onstage?

piscesx, Saturday, 14 November 2009 04:20 (sixteen years ago)

It's Alex. That's why he doesn't want anyone to see it.

EZ Snappin, Saturday, 14 November 2009 04:23 (sixteen years ago)

Isn't he the drummer from Gay Dad Bivouac? xp

DavidM, Saturday, 14 November 2009 09:56 (sixteen years ago)

Yeah, Joy Division, Stooges, MBV, Nick Drake, VU, Suicide, Young Marble Giants, Silver Apples, Raincoats... Who could care about them at this point?

from alcoholism to fleshly concerns (contenderizer), Saturday, 14 November 2009 10:14 (sixteen years ago)

Well, those bands (with the exception of the Silver Apples & the Raincoats) were all WAY better than Nirvana.

I kid, I kid. Enjoy your barrel scrapings.

There's actually no butter in peanut 'butter'. [/pedantry]

I've got some funny ideas about what sounds good (staggerlee), Saturday, 14 November 2009 17:21 (sixteen years ago)

Aneurysm is so great.

Trip Maker, Saturday, 14 November 2009 17:26 (sixteen years ago)

I love Dave Grohl playing the intro to Devo's version of "Satisfaction" before "Smells Like Teen Spirit"

nearly one-third of a man (Z S), Saturday, 14 November 2009 17:30 (sixteen years ago)

Man, who is that dancing dude in the middle of the stage on half of the songs? That guy's notoriety must be experiencing its biggest spike since '92

nearly one-third of a man (Z S), Saturday, 14 November 2009 17:31 (sixteen years ago)

He is Tony, The Interpretive Dancer.

StanM, Saturday, 14 November 2009 17:42 (sixteen years ago)

He also danced onstage at both of Nirvana's Reading Festival appearances in 91 & 92 and during three other Nirvana shows as well

StanM, Saturday, 14 November 2009 17:44 (sixteen years ago)

Heh, right on cue, Krist just mentioned that the dancing dude's name was Tony, and that he writes all the songs.

nearly one-third of a man (Z S), Saturday, 14 November 2009 17:46 (sixteen years ago)

and he was either drummer or roadie for uk grunge band bivouac

"There's actually no butter in peanut 'butter'. [/pedantry]"

I think you'll find that if you look closely at the label 'Peanut Butter' that there is indeed Butter in it.

I draw your attention particularly to the second half of the name and ask you to compare the letters in this second half to the 'Butter' that you have just tried to disprove.

I am no genius but I am not a fool.

Hinklepicker, Saturday, 14 November 2009 20:01 (sixteen years ago)

From Wiki

"Original drummer Antony Hodgkinson danced on stage for Nirvana; he now plays in Julian Cope's band."

MaresNest, Saturday, 14 November 2009 20:11 (sixteen years ago)

The word butter is indeed in "peanut butter," but peanut butter does not contain the substance called butter. So you're both right! Yay! (xpost)

StanM, Saturday, 14 November 2009 20:12 (sixteen years ago)

Yes, but who is the guy dancing onstage with Nirvana?

Ismael Klata, Saturday, 14 November 2009 20:22 (sixteen years ago)

I bet HE likes peanut butter.
