on the strength of their most recent album i've gotten all the rest of their stuff, and discovered it fills a previously unknown deepfelt need in my life for smooth, slightly synthy, slightly guitar-based indie pop of that soothes and grooves at the same time. like, kinda mor-indie without being utter shit? by no means does it need to be french btw.
another way to approach this fuzzy, vague question: what would have been the next track that japanese dj played at the lanternparty in lost in translation?

If you like Phoenix, you'll surely like Tahiti 80.

Some of the following perhaps, although none could really be described as Phoenix clones:

Montee - Isle Of Now: unabashed Scandinavian soft rock/yacht pop on Lindstrom's record label
Closer to 'Too Young' and 'If I Ever Feel Better' than any of the more recent, less good, Phoenix.

by no means am i looking for clones! though wow tahiti 80 is eerily similar to phoenix. but i like it! ra ra riots really fits the above description without 100% biting phoenix's style (only maybe 70%?) discovery is perhaps the winner so far though it lacks guitars. friendly fires would win except the vox are maybe a bit edgier than i like? odd vocals kills a lot of stuff i might have otherwise included here, like tv on the radio or of motreal
but regardless we're off to the start of a good playlist so far.

"unabashed soft rock/yacht pop" isn't at all far from the concept here. or perhaps "help me compose an itunes playlist to stick on when i invite some sophisticated mid-20's chick over and i want to set the mood without seeming like i'm putting the moves on her. yet."
though i suppose "more stuff like phoenix please" still really sums it up most succinctly.

Now we're talking.

You want the Aeroplane Remix of Friendly Fires' Paris, featuring Au Revoir Simone.

The new Zoot Woman album is quite good, and ambles back and forth across the guitar pop/indietronica divide. This is an older song, but they've got a fairly attractive ouvre with highlights amongst the related videos:

I saw Tahiti 80 live after Puzzle (2000), and they were great. I didn't like Wallpaper For the Soul as much, and haven't heard the subsequent albums. Should I? I also liked the self-titled Zoot Woman album. I might have to check out their last one.

Zoot Woman is one of the most unfortunately named bands ever. "Paper Faces", their nom de remix, is far less offputting. Stuart Price (aka Thin White Duke), the well known producer, either didn't have much to do with the 2009 album, or had scheduling commitments that prevented touring behind it for two years. The tunes are definitely there, but its a more electro album (as befitting 2007) than they might have produced today. I praised the single "We Won't Break" to the heavens on other sites two years ago. Even today, its one of the best songs of the year.

wow, that sounds very phoenix-influenced considering it was recorded in 1978
― messiahwannabe, Tuesday, 17 November 2009 15:17 (sixteen years ago)
but it's "the changes" that win the grand award for the band that is most phoenixesque, without actually sounding too too much like phoenix. smooth yet not soporific, electronics mixed with guitar, pleasant melodies sung by a guy with a decent but not overwhelming voice, good songwriting with unexpected lil changes and twists to keep things interesting...
i gotta say i had trouble finding most of this stuff on rapidshare (maybe i'm just not looking hard enough?) but that combined with the fact that i knew the band names but not always their best (or most phoenix-like) songs, made me actually dig into itunes, put together a wish list, then ACTUALLY PURCHASE MUSIC ONLINE! for MONEY!
chalk one up to ilm for keeping the music industry alive etc huzzah!

When Phoenix's first album came out in 2000, I lumped them in my head with this other French band that came out around the same time, called Mellow. I don't think anybody talks about those guys anymore, though. (And I can't vouch for how much they actually sounded like each other.)
― xhuxk, Monday, 15 February 2010 15:16 (fifteen years ago)
mellow were more like air the french band. i still listen to that mellow album.
― scott seward, Monday, 15 February 2010 15:20 (fifteen years ago)
Mellow were much more like Air + the Beatles and nowhere near as good. Phoenix started out with an Air connection too so maybe that's why you connect them.
