Since Josh and others have begun writing new intros in the Longest Thread Evah (barring Jay-Z/Nas battles), I thought it might be a good idea to have something where we could update old intros at will. Hope y'all agree.

M Matos, Tuesday, 9 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah. that thread.

Josh, Tuesday, 9 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago)

I'll start w/mine: I'm Michaelangelo Matos, 27-year-old male, full- time rock critic/freelance journalist. I live in Manhattan and write for a lot of places--Time Out New York, Village Voice and Spin most prominently, also weeklies in Seattle, Minneapolis (where I was born), Chicago, Baltimore, Atlanta and Memphis. I like a great deal of music, including but not limited to rave/postrave, hip-hop, African stuff (esp. from Kenya and S. Africa), reggae/offshoots, rock, pop, country, blues, R&B. I'm a generalist; my tastes can be pegged, as I've said before, as the bastard offspring of Robert Christgau's and Simon Reynolds's. I have a couple projects in the works, including a 'zine and a book, neither of which are close enough to completion for me to give much more away. (Sorry.)

M Matos, Tuesday, 9 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Yancey Strickler. Male. 23. Current residence: Brooklyn, NY. Full- time journalist. By day I write music news for ClearChannel radio stations (I know, I know) and also by day I write freelance stuff for a variety of publications I feel too lazy to mention (and also because their prestigiousness is dwarfed by Mr. Matos' credits). I grew up on a farm in Virginia. I have predictable, but fickle musical taste. As far as my crit pedigree, I have very little. I adore Meltzer, Tosches and Stanley Booth as writers, but I don't neccessarily agree with their tastes. Ira Robbins is my mentor (not in an abstract way, directly), yet we also have very different tastes (he just can't get into the noise rock). That makes me... unoriginal in an original way? Or something like that.

Yancey, Tuesday, 9 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh dear, me again? Ned Raggett, 31, and I'm currently listening to a new KMFDM side-project album or something. For some that will say nothing and for others it will say all too much. About to write novel number two, planning for my New Zealand trip, still interested in making new friends hither and yon, enjoying the Southern California weather. Still think MBV is my fave band ever, still think the Chameleons are number two. After that, the list of what I like is just too long to go through -- please trust me, it's there. ;-) Currently a bit sour on most music 2002, but that'll change, I'm just finding ways to recharge. Newest thing I heard that I loved was LCD Soundsystem, before that the Capricorns. Last show I saw was Peter Murphy, and he's getting a bit thin on the top there, but hell, age happens to us all. :-) Beyond that, books and reading are a passion, as is good food and good talk. Drop me a line, I don't bite.

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 9 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh, I've never done this. I'm Andrew Nairn, male, 20, from Newark, DE (45min from Philadelphia, and Baltimore; 2 hours from NYC and D.C.) My own genre is something like nostalgic and experimental esp. on the trippy or noisy sides. I like seeing live shows, and I play in some bands at some of them. I study electrical engineering and japanese. Other hobbies include: movies, art, nature/travel, reading, writing (fictional), hanging-out.

A Nairn, Tuesday, 9 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Fair enough. I'm a 34 yr old male, living and working in New York City. I work as a News Desk Editor at a well-known weekly news magazine, and freelance write on the side. In the past, after briefly slaving as an unpaid intern at SPIN (before it plumetted into a tailspin of mediocrity) I went onto scribble my insufferably big- headed opinions about music for the early-to-mid-90's incarnation of CREEM, some short-lived publications like THE NEW YORK REVIEW OF RECORDS, NEW YORK PERSPECTIVES, EXIT (not George Petros' slightly scary `zine, but a music mag), and an offshoot of RAYGUN called HUH! (which always struck me as a damn silly name for a magazine) among other places. As fate would have it, many of these periodicals have since shuffled off this mortal coil, but c'est la guerre. Recently, I've been contributing to the "Goings On About Town" section of THE NEW YORKER, and am always on the lookout for other writing outlets when the day-job permits. I'm pretty passionate about the music I adore, but I find myself not being able to spend as much time as I once did pursuing it (part of the aging process, methinks). That said, after a steady diet of heavy metal, hardcore, Punk Rock and a bit of vintage gothic rock, I'd like to think my tastes have broadened a bit over the years. Absolute hands-down, all-time favorites include KILLING JOKE, vintage make-up era Kiss, Cop Shoot Cop/Firewater, The Stranglers, Gang of Four, Iggy & the Stooges, Buzzcocks, the Ramones, the Clash, DEVO, the Plasmatics, Television, The Wedding Present, Robyn Hitchcock, Julian Cope, The Wonder Stuff, Skeleton Key, Sex Pistols, Sisters of Mercy, Circle Jerks, Motorhead, Anthrax, Iron Maiden, Kraut, the Pop Group, Public Image Ltd., Talk Talk, This Mortal Coil, Cocteau Twins, Barkmarket, vintage Queen, blah blah blah....and a whole bunch more. Being that my wife and I are moving out of our studio apartment to a not-quite-as-spacious-as-we'd- actually-prefer sized two-bedroom, I'm doing my best to weed out my CD garden (which, I'm ashamed to admit, at last count still toppled over 2,000 -- which is more a mark of embarassment than a boast), so to speak, and sell-off a lot of stuff....which is a slightly painful process, as you can imagine. Beyond music, I'm a pop-culture junkie obssessed with ridiculous cult cinema and bad cartoons. I prefer Connery over Moore, Roth over Hagar, Dickinson over D'ianno and have never, ever, ever been a fan of Pavement, post-OK COMPUTER Radiohead, contemporary R'n'B, and 99% of country music. I think teen-pop is a veritable cancer and Beyonce Knowles is the rancid embodiment of all that is foul in the music scene today. And Rap-Rock is just embarassing.

Alex in NYC, Tuesday, 9 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Jesus, I'm a long-winded, pretentious son of a bitch! Favorite new albums: the Interpol e.p., OBTANIUM by Skeleton Key and SIMPLE THINGS by Zero7.

Alex in NYC, Tuesday, 9 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago)

I never did an intro. I'm Kilian, 19 year old Journalism student from a town called Bray in the Republic of Ireland (it's a few miles south of Dublin). I worship at the altar of the likes of MBV, Low, Pavement, Yo La Tengo. I love slo-core, muted electronica, noisy alt- rock and alt-country. Currently getting heavy rotation on my CD player are: Butthole Surfers' "Locust Abortion Technician", the new Reindeer Secton and Beachwood Sparks' albums and Mazzy Star's "She Hangs Brightly". I haven't posted in the last few days so I hope I was sorely missed.

I’m Job de Wit from Amsterdam. I’m 31, I’m married and earlier tonight I was in a moshpit! First time in years, and I was happy to discover I still had it in me. (It was at the N*E*R*D show at the Paradiso, during Rock Star – yeah!). I work for the national Dutch public pop radio station, where I’m responsible for the weekly selection of the seven new records that get playlisted during the 22pm-1am timeslot. (Last week: Chicks On Speed, The Vines, Sixteen Horsepower, N.O.R.E., Echelon Network, Ils and The Reindeer Section; this week: Primal Scream, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Tocotronic, Roots Manuva, Jello, LCD Soundsystem and Supergrass) More importantly, I have my own two-hour dance music show (house, breakbeat, 2-step, hip-hop, drum ’n bass, broken beats, whatever I’m into) late on Saturday nights, which you can also listen to online, on-demand . I’m also the substitute presenter in case of holidays / illness for this show. Besides the radio gigs, I’m what I’m guessing is called a contributing editor at OOR, the major biweekly music paper here in the Netherlands, writing mainly but not exclusively about dance and hip-hop music.

JoB, Tuesday, 9 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago)

I’m also the substitute presenter in case of holidays / illness for this show. That's for the weekdays all kinds of music show. I always present my own weekend show, naturellement.

JoB, Tuesday, 9 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago)

My name is jamesmichaelward but my friends just call me James Ward. I am 21 and unemployable. I like listening to music made by people who wear nice clothes. If I don't like their clothes, then I don't like their music, it's as simple as that. My favourite band in the world right now is Riviera, this is very convenient for me as I am going out with the singer. I read IL* most days and post sometimes, usually to make a point that most people ignore or disagree with.

I am currently listening to Pleasure Victim by Berlin (they had good clothes).

jamesmichaelward, Tuesday, 9 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm Tom, I'm 29, and I'm a market researcher.

Tom, Tuesday, 9 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm Timothy Ivison, 20. I go to school in Chicago, but maybe (just maybe) I'll be going to London in the fall. i peruse ILM/E at a leisurely pace. I write pretentious doggerel and front like I know. My diverse taste in music is due to my violent mood swings. i like to mix up drumnbass and idm with my grandma's old show tune records and hawaiian lounge pop. My favorite musicians of the moment are Scratch Pet Land, followed closely by Kim Cascone. I'm also on a serious Roy Orbison kick.

Timothy, Tuesday, 9 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago)

James, say hi to the Dutch girl in Riviera for me, will you? Or is she your girlfriend? In which case, of course, you may also tell her I said hello.

JoB, Tuesday, 9 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago)

JoB - No, I'm not going out with her - that's Kairo, the guitarist. I take it you are a fan (of her at least). < PLUG > They are playing RoTa on Saturday < /PLUG >

jamesmichaelward, Tuesday, 9 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm AnasFK, irregular poster to this forum (never introduced myself before). 21 years old and recently graduated with a degree in Computer Science. I don't get a lot of the clever in-jokes that clog up most of ILM; but I do love them. My most original contribution to the forum seems to be that I'm not a journalist, have never written for a zine, don't know anyone that has. I'm not a social person at all. I have a real problem writing grammatically correct sentences, but this doesn't mean I don't appreciate the efforts of those that do follow these important rules.

Musically, I don't think I have heard a tiny percentage of what goes through the ears of the regulars in here (lack of time, money and patience). But I do like Bach, Beethoven, Scott Walker(Esp his later stuff) , Van Dyke Parks, Before and After Science, Bob Dylan, John Fahey, 2 Gentlemen in Verona by Cutler and Frith, Can, Faust, Derek Bailey, Nurse With Wound, Coil, This Heat, Guruguru, The Velvet Underground, The Black Dog, Naked City, The Durutti Column, Big Star, The Ultramagnetic MCs, Cecil Taylor, Charles Ives, The Velvet Underground, Mozart, Keiji Haino, Terry Riley, LaMonte Young, Neil Young, Pere Ubu.

I also like reading Noam Chomsky and Robert Anton Wilson, these two particularly have helped me form my worldview up till now.

Anas FK, Tuesday, 9 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Anas, your list includes a curious number of names of artists I like (or at least am interested in) but that I don't listen to a whole lot.

DeRayMi, Tuesday, 9 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't think I've formally introduced myself here either. Hi. I'm Douglas. I'm 32. I live with my wife and our cat in Queens. I write about music and comics for the Village Voice, Spin, Rolling Stone, the Boston Phoenix, Blender, the Chicago Reader, Publishers Weekly and a handful of other places. Starting in September, I won't be doing any freelance writing for a while, as I'll be in a pretty intensive program at Columbia University. I also run a tiny record label, Dark Beloved Cloud, which is currently celebrating its 10th anniversary--I've put out 70 or so records by a whole bunch of artists. I sometimes DJ at WFMU, and occasionally play bass in a couple of new wave bands. I have a small personal web site, lacunae.com.

My musical tastes are fairly broad, as those things go, but also fairly particular. I own more records by The Fall and James Brown than anyone else; other perpetual favorites of mine include Wire, Martin Carthy, New Order, Ornette Coleman, Fleetwood Mac, the Clean, the Magnetic Fields, Fela Kuti, Unrest, the Flying Lizards, Family Fodder, Uncle Wiggly and the Beatles.

Douglas, Tuesday, 9 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Ahem. Make that "...than BY anyone else." I think Alan Leeds has the "than anyone else" sewn up.

Douglas, Tuesday, 9 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago)

i'm brian, and i've never introduced myself, either. i'm 29, unemployed (whoo!), and have never had the 'pleasure' of working professionally in a music-related capacity (outside of training as a recording engineer and then deciding i liked music too much to suffer through recording crap bands for a living).

i sort of run a CDR label centering around noisy things, but have stopped due to lack of funds/'personality clashes' with 'scenesters'. i do the least popular radio show on WPRB, princeton, NJ (we may be tied with 'the worried waltz' for that honor) saturday nights.

i am currently listening to nothing but black metal, 60s psychedelia, and hip-hop, with smatterings of folk. favorites this month: wind of the black mountains, michael yonkers band (amazing!), el-p, six organs of admittance, the outsiders (dutch), the pretty things, my cat is an alien, manes, the electric eels, veles, the new gate album, that atrocious kid 606 mix disc, and, eh, the new khia and nelly songs. and "grindin" by the clipse has been in my head for-fucking-ever now.

your null fame, Tuesday, 9 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm Justyn, I'm 20 years old, and I live in Tucson, Arizona. I'm majoring in journalism but I'd like to be a filmmaker. I'm easily bored. But I like music. I listen to, to name just a few, the Manics, the Clash, the Velvets, Sly Stone, Sex Pistols, Kenickie, anything Phil Spector (up to 1970), Jesus and Mary Chain, Bikini Kill, Le Tigre, The Slits, Sleater-Kinney, The Beatles, Bob Dylan, Gang of Four, The Replacements, and Helium. Top films include Taxi Driver, 8 1/2, Heathers, The Rules of the Game, The Lady Eve, Some Like It Hot, Rushmore, Ghost World, The Last Picture Show, Citizen Kane, His Girl Friday, The King of Comedy, Apocalypse Now, Being There, and Blade Runner.

Favorite music writers: Greil Marcus, Nik Cohn, Lester Bangs, Richard Meltzer (I finally saw the light), Tom Ewing, Mark Sinker, Ally Kearney.

Other facts: I'm obsessed with New York City. I have a mad crush on Kathleen Hanna that even I can't really explain. I really hate facial hair and any kind of cologne. I'm not fond of drugs. When I was 3 I met John McCain and apparently told him I'd vote for him (I didn't). In real life, I do my Jerry Seinfeld impression perhaps slightly too often. I'm a sucker for books/films about gloomy alienated people even though I generally hate them if I meet them. I've had the same haircut since I was 14. I hate all political parties and am not too fond of regular parties, either. Someday I'd like to go to Antarctica. I guess that's all you need to know.

Justyn Dillingham, Wednesday, 10 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm Sean. I moved from a place with big sky and -40 degree winters to write about technology in a place with no sky, mild winters and smog that swallows you whole (that is, if the teetering piles of uncollected trash don't do you in first). I occasionally write for allmusic.com/AMG, and like collecting old comedy records. I still blame Ned.

Sean Carruthers, Wednesday, 10 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm Clarke Boehling. I just turned 22, and I recently graduated from the College of William and Mary (in Virginia) with a degree in linguistics and a minor in philosophy. I studied the Chinese language for four semesters, and I plan to spend a year in Beijing teaching English starting in 2003. I hope to attend grad school upon returning (hopefully on the West Coast, but we'll see). Music is what sucks up my spare time and my money, and it's almost always on my mind in some way or another. My tastes change significantly and often, though I always end up returning to stuff I once liked. (Believe me, I regret having sold, for instance, Superunknown in the Great Grunge Purge of '97 or so.) Some people think I'm an awful lot like Ned tastes-wise, and while I must admit that he's influenced me significantly, I've learned a lot from being a college radio DJ, and being close friends with a music professor who's interested in all manner of post-punk and shoegaze stuff. I respect and love to read so many of the posters here; even people whose tastes are pretty different from mine often write things that make significant impressions on me. I already know a few people on this board personally , but I'd love to attend an ILM meet-up and get to actually know lots of you guys (many of whom I feel like I already know anyway). Hopefully Terrastock will pan out! A couple of my favorite albums this year so far: MRI's All That Glitters, BoC's Geogaddi, Herbert's Secondhand Sounds, Eminem Show.

Clarke B., Wednesday, 10 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm James (or Jim). Currently 27. I have an irritatingly famous namesake. I play in a pop band that has seen very modest success (but hey it can only get better). I have tried to start a record label but so far I've been remarkably shit at it. I'd call myself a record collector but it would be more accurate to say I'm a compulsive music purchaser, sometimes will little regard or thought to what I buy. There's no real rhyme or reason to the bands I like, but there's a good chance if it can be described as 'indie' I probably have a soft spot for it. This is of course not set in stone, and makes my taste seem a lot more narrow than it really is. I waffle a lot, and I have a love/hate relationship with my writing skills...

electric sound of jim, Wednesday, 10 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago)

I still blame Ned.

I thought we were FWIENDS. *bawls*

I must admit that he's influenced me significantly

Dance for me, puppet, DANCE! Er, I mean, thanks, I do appreciate it. :-)

I like all sorts of music, but I only really mention a few key bands.

I am Starry Sarah, I do not post on here that often but I like introduction threads! The last FIVE (5 by 5) records I haf listened to starting from this morning and going in reverse:
  • Katerine - Mon Coeur Balance
  • The Legendary Jim Ruiz Group - Bigfoot
  • Disco Inferno - D.I Go Pop (borrowed from Tom post BB watching)
  • Gorkys Zygotic Mynci - Paid Cheto Ar Pam
  • New Order - Power, Corruption and Lies/Low-Life

  • I am desperately seeking a new JOB but not actually doing stuff to get them, because I am a bit rub. I like gin and have a lot of it. I am very poor at the moment and can't afford to buy myself lunch so today I have brought three (3) bananas for todays sustenance until I get home and possibly have some chips. I like chips. And Buffy!

Just turned 36 years old, catching up fast w/ the grey panthers, and now the days run away like wild horses over the hill blah blah. Currently earning a meagre living churning out various bits and pieces of freelance hackery. I've been a 2nd hand bookseller, a clerical officer in Buckingham Palace, an editor, a comic retailer, a drone in Tower's jazz department, and a layabout. I like jazz (esp. of the free variety), improv, jungle, techno, glitch, rap, country, world music, rock, post-rock, rock'n'roll, pop, noize, modern classical, ambient, folk, blues, r'n'b (new and old), psychedelia etc. etc.

I don't like Puddle of Mudd.

what again? gareth, london, in common with quite a few here right? i like wearing black polo necks and brown (fake) fur coats, but the weathers not too conducive for that shit right now, i've tried eyeliner but, you know, i don't like things in my eye, so i don't bother. i look like this, or at least i did until i got my hair cut. i'm all about records and books and films and all that stuff, oh yeah, right, you want to know what music i like, cuz its a music site and stuff, so you don't want to be hearing about my fascination with the isle of sheppey, or that i like buffy loads, or that i'm going to have a goats cheese and olive baguette for my dinner right?

ok, the standard constants or whatever are probably something like piano magic, autechre, beach boys, happy mondays, slowdive, cocteau twins, daft punk, jay-z, oldskool ('92) rave, jungle, garage, getting into todd edwards at the moment, the fall (77-82 natch), sarah records, east river pipe, kevin ayers, kraftwerk, adorable, aphex twin, dmx krew, st etienne, stereolab (until 97), i tell you what try this list from a poll last year, thats probably out of date now

my favourite authors are iain sinclair, victor pelevin, donald antrim and nicola barker (perhaps houellebecq but i've only read one book). my favourite films are fairly orthodox (midnight cowboy, get carter, the cars that ate paris, the presidents analyst, kes, borsalino, but i really want to see the umbrellas of cherbourg so much!)

i do a, not updated enough site, at www.norfolkwindmills.com

    will that do?

    gareth, Wednesday, 10 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago)

sharivari, would those local bands on the diy scene include sierpinski or the random number? where in leeds do you live?

    gareth, Wednesday, 10 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago)

hello there, i work in a very conventional service industry which pays me just emough to live with my girlfriend in beautiful cambridge and indiscriminantly buy records and trainers quite often. in the past i have lived and dj'ed around britain - cambridge, high wycombe, leeds, huntingdon - oh the places i have been and the things i have seen.

lolve vinyl a lil too much and can usually be found bitching about the quality of modern vinyl (its floppy for gods sake).

as far as music is concerned - hmm lets see (this is probably in chronological order of getting in to it. HIP -HOP (from the 80's)) sex pistols, hendrix, the who, mod sounds, r&b, soul (northern, commercial - motown, stax, invictus, buddha), various indie trelated media coined movements NWONW - well the trainers were good.

then i got in to the funk and it has spiralled since then - just searching for breaks - hitting the disco, the rare funk, the latin sounds, trying to find lo-fi hip hop from stones throw, playing stuff to make that ass move on the dance floor, weird and wonderful bootlegs, - living in soul jazz, busta and tip and jay-z, the neptunes and just watching the women dance

then finding that basically im not a 24 hour party person - listening to stuff that moved, axlerod, coltrane (jon and alice), barry white, ikes mood, ornette, tjader, MBV, phil spector, brian wilson, spiritulised, spaceman 3 - mercury rev (i like his voice)listening and finally hearing words - joni, carol, burt and hal , apoclypse now, creedance, dylan, hank williams, littlwe bit of protest and revolution, cant be dancing all the time sometimes you gotta fight, black power - last poets, revolution will not be televised, nina simeone, comman sense, marvin oh marvin you truely are the best

    yeah i like that

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 10 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago)

I am 37 years old (soon to be 38), am married and have a 7-month-old son, and live in Baltimore, Maryland (or, as the local rappaz style it, "Bodymore, Murderland"), where I am the current arts editor and soon-to-be editor in chief of the local alt.weekly (I was music editor here for about six years). I am originally from East Tennessee and obstinately proud of that fact.

Career-in-music-wise, besides my thrilling if unrenumerative years in the "alternative" press, I've worked in college and public radio, done extensive record-store clerking, and freelanced for, among others, NYLON, THE WIRE, and CMJ (and they still haven't paid me a red cent, the bastards), plus a ton of weeklies. I also wrote the liner notes for the recent reissue of John Fahey's THE DANCE OF DEATH. Not very impressive, I suppose, considering how long I've been doing this, but I'm not much of a sell-yourself sorta guy. Regardless, I don't really write about music anymore and wouldn't have time to freelance if I did.

I've been obsessed with music (listening, not playing) since childhood, and, something like Mr. Matos, am a free-range generalist. I like knowing a little something about everything, but am usually not that interested in knowing everything about anything in particular. Last five things I listened to: the first Faust album, Tim Berne/Bloodcount's Unwound three-CD set, the Kammerflimmer Kollektief's Maander, Plaid's Trainer comp, and Led Zep's Presence (a great summer album if you ask me, "Achilles Last Stand" notwithstanding). At one point I probably had as many IDM recordings as I do jazz albums, but probably not anymore. The first preset button on my car radio is tuned to 92Q, the local "urban" station, cause the black pop music that makes it to the commercial airwaves is almost always better than any other kind of pop music that makes it that far (plus the Q plays tons of homegrown Baltimore "club music," and if you don't know, you better ask somebody). The second preset button goes to the local NPR affiliate. The third goes to the somewhat lame local classical station; since I stopped writing about music, I've been listening to more classical music, mainly because I have the time to. String quartets by Mozart and Haydn and anything I can find by Takemitsu number among recent enthusiasms.

Oh, and I'm glad I stumbled across this place. It's been fun so far.

Mark Richardson, 32 years old, born and raised in Michigan, now living in Richmond, Virginia. I work in a law office for $ (not as a lawyer), but do as much writing as I can on the side. It never occured me to write about music until I was pushing 30. I'm grateful to be a longtime staffer at the much-maligned Pitchfork, and also write for the Allmusic Guide, a U.S. print 'zine called Grooves (IDM- oriented), and will have a piece in the next Sound Collector Audio Review. When it comes to music & writing, I'm interested in combining observations about music w/ a personal essay format, MFK Fisher with music instead of food. I write about electronic music more than anything else, but I listen to all sorts of stuff. Shopping for used records is a favorite pastime, and current musical obsessions often center around good records I can find for a dollar or two. Been posting on ILM since the beginning and its been a big influence on how I experience & respond to culture.

i'm minna... i'm 21 and i have three scrappy jobs.
job 1 = at a functions centre. there i get to listen to... greek wedding music; soppy bridal waltz ballads; the grease megamix (without fail); eye of the tiger; the latest kylie song and everything else in the top 40.
job 2 = supervising exams. we play a relaxation tape in the morning to make the candidates docile, it is called 'echoes of the andes' and it involves panpipes.
job 3 = assisting young children with their keyboard skillz = a schmozzle of demo buttons, 12 bar blues & 'lightly row'. i also got them to play 'cherry lips' and the theme from 'the simpsons'

i also have a scrappy double degree (arts/science) in (sort of) progress. there is not that much music involved in my degree although i did a subject last semester where we got to watch a prince video!

when the music i'm listening to wasn't foisted upon me by my jobs/edumacashun/being in a shop/friend's car stereo/watching telly/going out... i choose to listen to the avalanches (i'm their no.2 fan), lots of hip hop, lots of proper pop (+ a bit of indie pop), lots of dance, and a bit of everything else (sort of/not really. i can be more specific if asked directly.)

I'm Ronan, I'm 19, and I live in Dublin, Ireland.

I like bits of everything but currently everything about dance music appeals to me, house primarily, getting into techno, really getting into nu breaks like ILS, Stanton Warriors, Plump DJs, Koma and Bones. The sort of house I like at the mo' is non prog stuff, from Jon Carter to Joey Negro to X-Press 2 to Shakedown to whatever else I happen to like at a given time. There are too many hot singles to list them all, but my blog will be updated eventually http://compass.pitas.com

Oh and I also like "this nu electro stuff".

    And country.

X-Press 2's Lazy is single of the year though.

I'm Sterling. I live in Chicago now. Me and JM usta have this blog named In Review (Media Items Want To Be) which people seemed to like. He's in New York. I was in Berkeley and now I'm in Chicago. I like the stuff I hear on the radio, usually, and other stuff too, especially when I can dance to it.

Hi, I'm Brad, 46, long-time resident of Athens, GA. Reading ILM has been a musical education over the last few years and has helped balance my tendency to listen mostly to music by dead people (early blues, jazz, R&B, country, soul, classic rock) and elderly people (Gang of Four, The Cure, R.E.M., etc.). Currently I'm on a big electric Miles kick and am reading Evan Eisenberg's The Recording Angel.

Brad C., Friday, 23 February 2007 14:31 (eighteen years ago)

anyway, if you like Sri Pra Phai, it's worth walking a few extra blocks and trying Zabb, equally authentic, Issan Thai cuisine. On the same block as Burmese Cafe and the new korean fried chicken place, Unidentified Flying Chicken.

dan selzer, Friday, 23 February 2007 16:54 (eighteen years ago)

Heyer Brad. Regrettably I must note that Miles iz dead too.

what do you dudes think of arunee, on 79th off roosevelt?

James Redd and the Blecchs, Friday, 23 February 2007 16:59 (eighteen years ago)

    Evan Eisenberg's The Recording Angel.

this book changed the way I hear music.

m coleman, Friday, 23 February 2007 16:59 (eighteen years ago)

That's a great book.. I always wondered if you knew of its existence, mark, siince you wrote a book on a similar theme- at least I think you did, not actually having read yours at this juncture.

James Redd and the Blecchs, Friday, 23 February 2007 17:01 (eighteen years ago)

oh yeah. huuuge influence on Playback, cited in bibliogarphy etc. he updated it a couple years ago when it was reissued and I must confess to not having read the new chapter (s). the last chapter of the original edition, where he goes to visit a "record collector" is absolutely mindblowing. I'd be afraid to ask what happened to that guy.

m coleman, Friday, 23 February 2007 17:05 (eighteen years ago)

hi, i'm Mark, 40, living in san francisco and i cook for a living. i'm really glad to have stumbled onto this site where there are so many music lovers... right now i'm playing keyboards in a band that is spacey-droney-metallic called LordGodBird. favorite bands of all-time: the clash, new york dolls, the stones, and velvet underground

    outdoor_miner, Friday, 23 February 2007 17:13 (eighteen years ago)

Welcome! You cook? Then you'll be very welcome at the I Love Cooking sub-board here, as well as the various food threads on the sister board to this one, I Love Everything. As a very amateur cook myself it's good to have more folks aboard who work with food!

Brad C! Electric Miles slays for all time! Welcome!

Mark the Outdoor Miner & Cook! That is indeed a formidable list! Welcome!

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Friday, 23 February 2007 17:46 (eighteen years ago)

I'm Mel, I'm 29, I think I do pretty much love everything but in particular I love music, crochet and books. Although I don't read books on music or crochet - I prefer novels, politics, art, theory and history. I've never posted on the site before because I only tripped over it on the internet half an hour ago and have been registered about 5 minutes. I live in Berlin where today it's bloody freezing, but I'm from England originally. I'm in happy self employment in music as a publicist where I stick to my rule of only promoting music I'd buy myself.. Techno, house and electronica. I also like folk music, British bands like The Cure, The Clash and Massive Attack, and female singers that remind me of my mother - Carole King, Tamy Tyrell, Elke Brooks, Joan Baez.. I'm much happier here than I was in London - I've learnt to take time for breakfast, to recycle and I've quit smoking. I have just bought my first drum machine and am in love. Not with the drum machine, although it comes a pretty close second.

    idle_matilda, Friday, 23 February 2007 17:52 (eighteen years ago)

Welcome welcome. We just moved into a new code setup here so you actually have good timing! Tamy Tyrell, that's a new name to me...

Ned Raggett, Friday, 23 February 2007 17:53 (eighteen years ago)

the late Tammi Terrell of Motown & Marvin Gaye duets fame?

m coleman, Friday, 23 February 2007 18:07 (eighteen years ago)

m coleman, Friday, 23 February 2007 18:08 (eighteen years ago)

Tammy Tyrell was on Motown. She died really young, 26 I think, but did some beautiful duets with Marvin Gaye in her time. Ain't No Mountain High Enough! Lovely voice, passionate performer. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VoZWSxeCLd0

and see I Love Books. Mel likes books!

scott seward, Friday, 23 February 2007 18:33 (eighteen years ago)

a quick scroll indicates I've never done this so here goes.

My name is Mark. 49 y.o. and I've lived in Manhattan NYC since 1981. Married with 1 child who unlike me is musically inclined, a budding singer/songwriter in 5th grade. I'm a reformed rock critic, author of Playback: From The Victrola To MP3 100 Years of Music Machines & Money and with any luck I'll publish another book before reaching retirement age. Lately I've been reviewing non-fiction books about subjects other than music. My taste in music is all over the map: vintage jazz soul R&B country, all kinds of rock and roll. I wrote a lot about "new pop" and old-school rap in the 80s. Growing up in the midwest my tastes were formed by early exposure to the "high energy" rock and roll sound of Detroit and the emergence of NY punk rock in the late 70s changed my life. I always felt like "Rock & Roll" by the Velvet underground could've been about me.

Lately I've been on a jazz fusion kick, also troicalia and most recently vintage country rock and oddball singer-songwriters. My tastes are a bit retro, but I am open to offers.

I started posting on ILM as lovebug starski, and while I can be a bit er contentious I enjoy this place and have learned a lot here along with discovering all kinds of music new and old. "peace"

m coleman, Friday, 23 February 2007 18:36 (eighteen years ago)

And he's a good guy who one day will get very drunk with me out in LA somewhere. Or something like that.

Ned Raggett, Friday, 23 February 2007 18:38 (eighteen years ago)

And he is not, contrary to popular belief, one of the originators of Rap music.

dan selzer, Friday, 23 February 2007 19:40 (eighteen years ago)

Jorge here. I've been on ILX/ILM/ILE since 2001 and see no signs of stopping. Yes, I like it here. I work in TV for a living but do the side thing like play in a band (Kid Congo & the Pink Monkey Birds) and make my own music (Duermo, Professor Genius). I live in Jersey City, NJ. i think ILM needs to get more YESSED out.

Capitaine Jay Vee, Friday, 23 February 2007 19:47 (eighteen years ago)

B-b-b-but he is one of teh Residents, isnn'e?

    t**t, Friday, 23 February 2007 19:49 (eighteen years ago)

Jorge? Does Kid Congo live in Jersey too? How was your show in New Haven?

kwhitehead, Friday, 23 February 2007 20:39 (eighteen years ago)

Hey. No, Kid lives in DC. I'm not playing w/ the Pink Monkey Birds at the moment (last time was in '05). His current band is a three piece (bass/guitar/Kid) and they're excellent.

Capitaine Jay Vee, Friday, 23 February 2007 22:25 (eighteen years ago)

lovebug, you introduced yourself on this thread
and your introduction is in the google cache but not actually in the thread proper. this is obviously some type of (love)bug.

James Redd and the Blecchs, Friday, 23 February 2007 22:49 (eighteen years ago)

I could swear I've replied to one of these threads but I don't seem to be on this. I'm 27, a Canadian currently studying for my PhD in music (composition) at SUNY Buffalo (in Buffalo NY of course.) I'm on the first thread and have been trying to keep ILM Yessed out since the beginning. My Pandora station is here. It gives you an idea of things I like except that I can't get any Western or Indian classical music on there.

Sundar, Friday, 23 February 2007 23:00 (eighteen years ago)

Oh, I expect it's the same sort of bug issue.

Sundar, Friday, 23 February 2007 23:01 (eighteen years ago)

here is the cached version of the other thread. sundar replied to that one too however briefly.

James Redd and the Blecchs, Friday, 23 February 2007 23:06 (eighteen years ago)

except that I can't get any Western or Indian classical music on there

    Minor niche genres, obviously.

Rockist Scientist, Friday, 23 February 2007 23:11 (eighteen years ago)

your turn james redd/ have you ever done this? (it took a minute but I think I've cracked yr nuILX identity, my book-loving amigo)

m coleman, Friday, 23 February 2007 23:12 (eighteen years ago)

About the missing posts -- there is the automatic skip-posts-function in place. Is that the source of the problem?
