Danny Gatton vs john Petrucci

assuming Gatton were still alive, if you put these 2 against each other, then who would slay, and who would be left bleeding in the dust, mother fucker?

"Gatton's playing combined musical styles such as jazz, blues and rockabilly in an innovative fashion, and he was known by some as "the telemaster" (a portmanteau of "Telecaster", Gatton's guitar of choice, and "Master"). He was also called "the world's greatest unknown guitarist". His most common nickname was "The Humbler", owing to his ability to "humble" or out-play anyone willing to go up against him in "head cutting" jam sessions. A photo published in the October 2007 issue of Guitar Player magazine shows Gatton playing in front of a neon sign that says "Victims Wanted"."

"John Peter Petrucci (born July 12, 1967) is an American guitarist and songwriter best known as a founding member of the progressive metal band Dream Theater. Along with his bandmate Mike Portnoy, he has produced all Dream Theater albums since their 1999 release, Metropolis Pt. 2: Scenes from a Memory. Petrucci was named as the third player on the G3 tour six times, more than any other invited guitarist. GuitarOne ranked him as the 9th Greatest Shredder of All Time":

That "Overture 1928" number of theirs I think actually is pretty awesome, I wish all their stuff was like that! I'm pretty sure it's a one-off though.

Gatton always reminds me of a story I read about a country singer who fired his guitar player for being too flashy, saying, "He soloed himself right out of a job."

that jazz clip really reminds me of a friend of mine, was a hardcore jazz dude for years and then only did country and singer/songwriter stuff for awhile, ending up midway between the two:

Saw NYC-based, DC raised Gatton fanatic jazz guitarist Joel Harrison and avante DC guitarist Anthony Pirog do a Gatton tribute this past Saturday with Gatton's bass player and Bill Kirchen's drummer. I liked the songs that had a more Link Wray rockabilly feel to be honest. Harrison's label is saying his Mother Stump album is Gatton influenced, but not really. Well, Gatton and Miles Davis Bitches brew and 70s jazzfunk maybe.

As noted I like Gatton quite a lot.

Kirchen is a showy clown. Tight band, but ultimately leaves me cold.

Are you familiar with Steve Jordan (the rhythm guitarist, as opposed to several other Steve Jordans)? Also a DC creature / Blues Alley habitue. Played in Stan Kenton's band, with Benny Goodman, etc. He played acoustic, strictly rhythm - 40+ years and never took a solo. (I was reminded of him by the "soloed himself out of a job" quote upthread.)

Apropos of nothing, Jordan's widow, Pat, was a co-worker of mine many years ago - my first job, her last. A classic hard-drinking ad woman, her father had been White House correspondent in the 30s and 40s. She told very good stories, some of which may even have been true.

Yea, shoulda noted we discussed some of this on the Capital Swamp thread.

Agree with ya on Kirchen. Have seen the name Steve Jordan in ads but that's about it. I liked the late Esteban Steve Jordan from Texas.
