Most Surprising Record Review

This is sort of inspired by Tom's Be Your Own Genre thread. What is the most surprising positive or negative review you've read by a particular writer or critic--the instance where you thought for sure you knew their tastes well enough to peg their particular stance on something, only to have your presumption wind up on its face?

Xgau raving about Ted Nugent's 'Great Gonzos' best-of ("ROCK AND ROLL!!!" Caps and exclamation points his)

Lester bangs praised a James Taylor album once but I think that was sarcastic, as he compares it favorably to 'Black Sabbath Vol. 4' and 'Exile on Main Street' without elaborating

I dunno, Dave Q, sounds like he was pulling off one of your own style of comparisons! But yes, it ain't fun if he didn't actually explain why.

Greil Marcus's unironic love for Foreigner has always been a little surprising.

Justyn Dillingham, Wednesday, 10 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Just like his love for Counting Crows. And I love that Marcus hates Lucinda Williams. Greg Tate's Dylan and Springsteen reviews come to mind here. Philip Sherburne's Ryan Adams affection also.

CTCL's publicity blow-job for the Yeah Yeah Yeah's last issue. WTF?!?!?!? I thought the mag was going to be different, but you know. If I wanted to read self congratulatory wank-pieces about a band with only one EP to their name, I'd go get the NME.

kate, Wednesday, 10 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

If you were surprised by that Kate, then you've clearly never read any of my articles in the past. I'm as predictable as a moldy sponge, me.

Jerry, Wednesday, 10 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

[That would be an American sponge, then.]

What are you doing online, Jerry? Get back to your Ramones book ::whipcrack::

Oops, did I post this to "most unpredictable"? I mean most HATED piece of music journalism. Miss AMP and me agreed most drunkenly last night that YYYs were created solely for purpose of gratifying you and most male hacks in world...

kate, Wednesday, 10 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

kate see them live and you'll be calling all your friends...

Tracer Hand, Wednesday, 10 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

You clearly know nothing about me or my taste in music if you assume that... From descriptions of their live show, I cannot think of a band I'd be less interested in.

kate, Wednesday, 10 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

the guy who plays guitar is REALLY SKINNY

Tracer Hand, Wednesday, 10 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

and i thought you liked siouxsie sioux?

Tracer Hand, Wednesday, 10 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

But is he dirty and does he drone? This is IMPORTANT, you foolish man. The Strokes are skinny and she wishes them dead.

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 10 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Is he dirty, too? Ooh Kate, you might be in trouble...

Dan Perry, Wednesday, 10 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Unsurprisingly, I see a Certain Someone is again in perfect sync with me.

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 10 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I met him at some old industry doo or other. He was totally unappealing in every way, shape or form. They exist to appeal to middle aged music journalists with obsessions about Punk Rock Chicks dancing on their bear backs with stiletto heels, not to me.

I'm trying to think that last boy that wanted me to adore him, but I'm not having much luck. Oh yeah, the singer from The Calling has clearly been studying the look very hard, but neglected to remember the bit about having TALENT or a DECENT BAND. Sigh.

I suppose I'll just have to go back to my Radiohead porn...

kate, Wednesday, 10 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Ramones Ramones Ramones Ramones.... sigh. OK. I'm outta here!
