Bobby Conn (slight return)

'Golden Age' is so classic and every time I listen to it it just gets better. Title track is too true for comfort. "Angels" is a masterpiece, one of hose story songs where you find yourself identifying even if you weren't ever there - eternal discovery that the sort of person who wants to inititate you (lucky you!) into the wild life you'd always craved has SERIOUS problems (because otherwise why wouldn't they be getting their kicks with somebody their own age instead of drugging teenage runaways) and by which time you've found this out the 'wild life' has turned into the SQUALID life and you're suddenly "31 but still in an adolescent haze that never lifted", and plus the neat producion touches like "Angels" subsonic squiggles justifies Jim O'Rourke's existence on this planet. This was the album 'Diamond Dogs' could've been if Bowie really was a weirdo or Beck would've made if he hadn't read 'Interview' magazine from the age of seven. Complete total masterpiece and I can't wait to play it next to 'heathen' which I haven't heard yet

'Course I would've advised against having his wife play electric violin on EVERY track, but Bobby would probably just sneer at me and say "That's what they said about Starland Vocal Band too, motherfucker"

Oh, and Pitchfork gave it a 2.9 so they can eat a dick

I really like it too. I felt like I could add "...and that's why it's good" to the ends of about half the sentences in the pitchfork review.

It is a lovely record, but to proclaim a classic is a bit much.

Join me on ILM in three months and tell me you're still listening to it. I bet you're not

For now it is fun - in a Frogs/Ween way

The first time I heard the one sudden "fuck" in the lyrics I laughed outloud, and then he did it again. I forget what the line was?

Bobby Conn is classic -- and of the better lives shows to boot, energetic performances and Conn's sense of humor. Really, I have a fondness for all of his albums. Rare it is to have a performer who is not only funny, but writes good winking songs.

As opposed to good drinking songs? (Please note I am not fond of Conn myself.)

five months pass...
The main problem with Bobby Conn is that he does not subscribe to the hipster cynicism, which is all too present in many of the music scenes today. The people that make negative reviews just seem to miss the whole point of his music. Just wait until they can't praise him enough in a few years, or until it is considered cool in those circles that take music reviews way too seriously.

That 'We Come In Peace' song off it is really fucking good, as good as much of 'The Golden Age' album.
