"Fight Test," duh. One of the best songs of the decade. And fuck you if you dismiss it as nothing more than a Cat Stevens ripoff.

Mr. Snrub, Wednesday, 18 November 2009 02:17 (sixteen years ago)

That and "Yoshimi Part One" and "Do You Realize" and "Ego Trippin'" are really all you need from this one. This album was a bit of a letdown after the GODLIKE UNTOUCHABLE GENIUS of Zaireeka and Soft Bulletin and Southern Oklahoma Cosmic Trigger Contest, I'm ho.

Mr. Snrub, Wednesday, 18 November 2009 02:19 (sixteen years ago)

What Cat Stevens song is Fight Test supposed to have ripped off?

'father and son'... really gets in the way of the song. I don't know how anyone can listen to it and not hear boyzone honking away.

probably the weakest latterday lips album, this. but 'do you realize', 'ego tripping' and 'pavonis moons' are all gold. GOLD.

I'm going for 'realize', because it does have a rare power. when they played it on sunday night I wanted to sob like a baby and laugh myself hoarse all at the same time.

Do You Realize should and will walk this. Wasn't it recently adopted as the official song of their home state or something?

anagram, Wednesday, 18 November 2009 09:01 (sixteen years ago)

DYR is awesome -- but Ego Trippin' is it for me. And I disagree about this being a letdown in any way other than that it *sounded* like a letdown until you dug in to it and really started listening.

I tend to agree that this is a weaker album, or at least not the FL album that is most appealing to my personal taste, but I just put this on so I could make an informed poll choice and had one of those "holy shit, contrary to my previous opinion, this album is actually really good" moments. So I don't know what I"m going to vote, except not DYR because as good as that song is, I'm kind of tired of it.

am wanting to vote for ITMOTM, but have not heard this album in a long time

Do You Realise and Fight Test are wonderful, but as a wildcard, I've voted for Are You A Hypnotist, which is much underrated. Huge drums - something this album tends to lack -, nagging cosmic guitar stabs, and a really powerful build to the chorus.

It's between Hypnotist & Ego Tripping for me, but the whole middle section of the album is terrific.

boring emo vote for DYR

I've always heard this as a pop album set in a Blade Runner future (pink robots, A.I. love songs, etc.). It tickles the sci-fi nerd in me. I love its proggy orchestral pretensions with the thick hip-hop undertow, the quivering voice and naif melodies on psych backing (Neil Young fronting Pink Floyd). DYR is gorgeous. Hypnotist is great to sing in the shower.

I hadn't listened to this record in a long time, but was surprised by how well it held up. Fight Test.

Fight Test.

no idea on this track let the boring begin (k3vin k.), Wednesday, 18 November 2009 19:49 (sixteen years ago)

I'd go for 'One MoreRobot', it sort of reminded me of Air. I never thought this album was as good as the two either side of it but I could probably do with re-listening.

The production on this album has always irked me. I'm not sure what it is but the whole thing feels claustrophobic in my ears. Always leaves me wanting more. I'll pick Ego Trippin for the bassline.

If the production feels claustrophobic to you, you should listen to the coda of "One More Robot/Sympathy 3000-21" -- that thing sounds like Ennio Morricone touring the ARP factory.

Naive Teen Idol, Wednesday, 18 November 2009 23:55 (sixteen years ago)

this album is still pretty good. i forgot how slow and psychedelic it was. i'm voting for "In the Morning of the Magicians."

it's indeed dull if you take out fight test, DYR, and yoshimi part 1.

Weird, how Yoshimi pt 1 so low?

utterly baffled by fight test love.

m the g, Monday, 23 November 2009 10:11 (sixteen years ago)

I voted for One More Robot for the bass line. It's a shame there was no love for All We Have Is Now which would have been my second choice. It's really sad but yet the melody in the verse sounds like something from Reproduction by The Human League. You don't really get that combination in many songs.

Kitchen Person, Monday, 23 November 2009 10:58 (sixteen years ago)

Listening to this again today to see if my "Ego Trippin'" vote was valid, it occurs to me that the real secret to this album isn't the hits/singles/tunes a la "Fight Test"/"DYR"/"Yoshimi Pt. 1" that sort of define its rep, but the orchestral/synth funk mashups w the sad melodies soaring over. As a result, the singles feel more like entry- than arrival-points.

This is the one about the guy from the future? That's one I remember liking most and the only other than the Big Two Songs that I remember.

what a wonderful album. SongOfSam kinda sums up my thoughts on it.

It's a tossup between "Are You a Hypnotist??" for the kickass drums and mellotron choir and "Ego Tripping". Ego also had a really great B-side: "Up Above the Daily Hum". Should'a been on the album.
