Also, the Pet Shop Boys' first two album titles were conceived as elaborate jokes, as in a customer walks into a record store and asks for "The Pet Shop Boys, Please...." A year later the clerk sees the same customer and asks "You here for the new ... um ...Depeche Mode wasn't it?" The customer says, "No, The Pet Shop Boys, Actually..."

"courtney love" isn't a spoof. lois and, er, courtney apparently came up with the name together and then they both went on to use it separately, unintentionally so i suppose

Dark Side of the Spoon by Ministry.

I am flesh and blood. You are software and circuitry. (chap), Thursday, 19 November 2009 01:38 (sixteen years ago)

(Which I think is a pretty decent pun)

I am flesh and blood. You are software and circuitry. (chap), Thursday, 19 November 2009 01:39 (sixteen years ago)

Ministry had a whole cottage industry of those things. Rio Grande Blood, Houses of the Mole, The Last Sucker... Al never met a bad pun he didn't like.

Van Slyke Paidbreed (J3ff T.), Thursday, 19 November 2009 03:19 (sixteen years ago)

I pointed this out on some old Cover Connections-type thread: All three of Ugly Kid Joe's albums based their parodic titles on landmark rap albums. (As Ugly as They Wanna Be, America's Least Wanted, Menace to Sobriety). And as an a bonus, their very bandname was a direct takeoff on hair-metallers/tourmates Pretty Boy Floyd.

Also, a name that fills me with inexplicable glee: The Tex Pistols

Race Against Rockism (Myonga Vön Bontee), Thursday, 19 November 2009 07:52 (sixteen years ago)

Speaking of that, The Celibate Rifles.

Too Much Joy had Son Of Sam I Am and Cereal Killers. Green Eggs And Crack might be my favorite of the titles they used, but it doesn't quite fit the criteria. Though their absolute best is the unused title for what became Cereal Killers - Don't Worry Bea Arthur.

EZ Snappin, Friday, 20 November 2009 13:15 (sixteen years ago)

That is an awesome fact that I had never known before about a band that means quite a lot to me. Thank you.

kingkongvsgodzilla, Friday, 20 November 2009 13:21 (sixteen years ago)

I believe I learned that from the Rolling Stone review of the album. I was chuffed to see them get reviewed and it was such a great factoid it stuck with me all these years.

Band names that are parodies of other bands' names

dad a, Friday, 20 November 2009 19:23 (sixteen years ago)

Um, we've not mentioned disco one-hit wonders Lipps, Inc. Which leads me to this hypothesis: The worse the pun the more crap the act.

mottdeterre, Friday, 20 November 2009 19:44 (sixteen years ago)

^^^ I agree with the implication that Lipps, Inc. is an awesome pun.
