thanks, Markp. So, what was it? Or do you even do this sort of thing?

* ring *   * ring *   Dude you gotta answer this question!

Tracer Hand, Wednesday, 10 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I don't phone friends about records. Not ever! However, drunkenly texting people in the middle of the night from gigs that are rocking my world, erm, yes, I'm quite frequently guilty of that. ::oh, the shame::

kate, Wednesday, 10 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

soooooooo what was it kate. and please include any phone-holding-in- air info (how long did you hold it for; did you move closer/farther away from speakers; etc)

Tracer Hand, Wednesday, 10 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

mine was Peaches btw last year. i recall saying things like "best record of the year" though it was like february or something. i was so psyched.

Tracer Hand, Wednesday, 10 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

texting is not much altered by proximity to speakers tracer

mark s, Wednesday, 10 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I have never ever in my life played a gig down a mobile at someone. (Though I have beastly friends who have... "Hey! I'm in Scotland! Flaming Lips are going on!!!!" ::cue godawful noise that might be Flaming Lips or might be South American Death Insects getting inside the handset::)

I was tempted, however, at Bowie's Meltdown, just to go "nyeah nyeah nyeah nyeah, I'm at Bowie and you're not!"

kate, Wednesday, 10 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

This afternoon. Saw a cheap secondhand Rammstein live disc and phoned a friend who I knew was looking for it.

Siegbran Hetteson, Wednesday, 10 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh yes, but Mark S, if you text too close to speakers, you get that wonderful DEH-DEH-DEH DEH-DEH-DEH interference pattern over them. I have to yell at people when they leave mobiles on top of Jason because he starts picking up alien transmissions from outer space when you do that. (Bloody Jason Spaceamp...)

kate, Wednesday, 10 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I never phone anyone about a new record. But a friend of mine phoned me in October/November during the anthrax scare. He heard a story about it on NPR & they used the feedback from the Gang of Four song as interlude music. That was worth a call.

Dave225, Wednesday, 10 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

since i don't own a mobile or txtmsg device i am reduced to saying "record of the year" in the rain on a payphone and attempting to sing the bassline, at which point i am hung up on

Tracer Hand, Wednesday, 10 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh I always do this at shows, but it's all embarassing ecstacy induced loved up chat, with maybe the odd "COME ON!!!!!!!" thrown in.

Ronan, Wednesday, 10 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I emailed a friend to warn him that the critically lauded "Pink Flag" by punk legends Wire is in fact a rancid pile of unlistenable toss - does that count?

chris sallis, Wednesday, 10 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

About an hour ago, telling him "Shit, get onto WinMX now, and download all you can by Richard Cheese. Especially his Limp Bizkit medley".

Dom Passantino, Wednesday, 10 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Talked to my friend 2 nights ago and asked if his wife, who just turned 29, had purchased the new Breeders album, which I quite like. I remembered she turned me onto _Pod_ like, uh, 10 years ago. Anyway he was all "uuuuhhhh..... nooooooo....." How old is too old to buy the new Breeders album?

Aaron, Wednesday, 10 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I emailed a fair few people to notify them of Nina Nastasia's Peel Session... but phoning, probably when I played my mate Pizzicato Five's seminal 'One Two Three Four Five Six Seven Eight Nine Ten Barbie Dolls' down the phone. He had previously thought I was a nice person.

Mr Swygart, Wednesday, 10 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

probably 'amnesiac', since it was the last time i was like "hey man i've got this and nobody else does for the moment so why don't you come over and check it out".

btw, is Mark's last name at all related to old Superman villain Mxyzptlk? my fave villain name of all time.

Dave M., Wednesday, 10 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I phoned Sarah at our house the other night to say KATE MUST GO and I think I mentioned a record, can't remember exactly though.

Tom, Wednesday, 10 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I may have done this in the past but if so I've forgotten. I would certainly never do it now. Waste of time.

David, Wednesday, 10 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh, that takes me back to Grand Prix-era Teenage Fanclub, when I forced a friend in LA to listen to the transition from "About You" to "Sparky's Dream" and then most of the latter over the telephone.

felicity, Thursday, 11 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

When I was in high school one obnoxious drunken habit of mine was to call up friends and quiz them over Depeche Mode lyrics. When I worked at a record store I used to call up friends and tip them off if we got something I knew would interest them (out of print Rough Trade titles) or should interest them (MSR titles). When The Virgin Suicides movie was big I would call up friends and play Todd Rundgren records over the phone, which they usually didn't find as amusing as I did.

J Blount, Thursday, 11 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Found Swell Maps 'Jane from Occupied Europe' for only $10. Phoned someone who had expressed interest in the Swell Maps. Bought it for him. He taped it for me. It's fucking good and I wish I'd bought it for myself!

Keith McD, Thursday, 11 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I've never been at your house, Tom, how can you say such terrible things about me?

I just realised that I think my equivalent is emailing people about records, going "what is this? have you heard of this? want to hear it? what do you think?"

The last time I did that was with Sterling Roswell, because I refused to believe it was his real name. The last record I heard that was so GOOD I emailed random people telling them to get it was Edible 5ft Smiths.

kate, Thursday, 11 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Last time I phoned anyone about a realy good record would be when I received my copy of DJ Godfather, "who runs this" I called my little friend spinkle to play it down the phone to her, we liked it we both had a bit of a groove on either end of the phone and decided immediately to go out groovin, huh shuks ain't music great!!!!

Princess Purdie, Thursday, 11 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I can't remember what it was either, it might have been Tumblin' Tumbleweeds or atommick bomb based songs. I have msged many people with my Ode on Totally Addicted to Bass VIZ "wow-ah-wuh-OW" and also KATE BUSH i.e, WOW WOWWWW WOOOOOOW WOOOOOW WOWOWOWOWO WOOOO_ooooooo unbelieeeeeeeeevabblleee! And during the Moldy Peaches I texted Tom going 'best gig evah' (and promising a Freaky Trigger article which true to form I have forgotten about doing until now) and he replied back with the ultimate insult: "send it to pitchfork" - ARGH!!!

Sarah, Thursday, 11 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I recently called my sister demanding my Daft Punk and Spiritualized cds back*, don't know if that actually counts.

*Her reply? "Only if you burn a cd of the new Primal Scream album for me", now that's just eeeevil.

Nicole, Thursday, 11 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

But the new Primal Scream album is better than the latest Daft Punk and latest Spz put together! Which is REALLY not saying much, is it?

kate, Thursday, 11 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

b-b-but the latest Daft Punk is so right, so RIGHT!

I'm not sure about the new Primal Scream, by not sure I mean I've yet to form an opinion, liking Primal Scream around here is a form of leprosy though.

Ronan, Thursday, 11 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Doh! My nose just fell off, dude!

kate, Thursday, 11 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Yeah I've no limbs left at this point.

Ronan, Thursday, 11 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Dave M -> Sadly, my name is mine alone, and in no way related to Mxyzptlk].

Mark, Thursday, 11 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Did people ever try to trick you into saying your name backwards? : ) Anyhow, cool name, and it prompts better jokes than Blount (pronounced 'blunt') which usually just garners lame pot jokes or "to put it bluntly". I would kill for a Mel Blount joke! Even a Corie Blount joke would be welcome.

J Blount, Thursday, 11 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

i rang me mate reevesy to tell him how good the mars volta single was. (very hard man to please musically is rev)

del a robbo, Thursday, 11 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm on dial-up right now, so, technically, every time I post here I'm phoning friends about records.

Christine "Green Leafy" Indigo, Friday, 12 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Dave M -> Sadly, my name is mine alone, and in no way related to Mxyzptlk],

*adopts stoner matthew mcconaughey voice a la dazed and confused*

...it'd be a lot cooler if you were :)
