I'm tired of hearing of this album! Now, I've never heard it, but everyone seems to think Jesus himself made it... Call me a skeptic, but I'm under the vague impression that there's some kind of hipster irony involved in all this-- the same kind of irony that causes people to rave about the Shaggs... Don't mean to trample on anyone's toes, but given the background of these two CDs, I have to be a bit skeptical.

Now, once and for all... Is this Langely School album REALLY all it's cracked up to be?

...........no. It's quaint and enjoyable and then you realise you are effectively listening to school assembly and subsequently sprout sizeable trauma.

I was trying to be cynical about it too, until I heard it. A lot of it is very enjoyable and very lovely. The slower, sadder stuff is the better stuff, Space Oddity is pretty awesome. There is some filler, but I guess they were trying to be complete about it. There really is something great about it aside from the novelty, in my opinion. I would recommend giving it a try.

It's wonderful.

Hrrrm. Re-listening to bits of it now. Maybe not so much 'school assembly' as 'end of term fourth year production', and undoubtedly more affecting and lovely than i remember... but i'm quite poor at the moment and cannot justify buying it, so i have to pretend i really dislike it in order to stop myself wanting it. It's very nice, though, yes.

Love it. The first few times I listened, it did have an outsiderish appeal - like a choir of Martian schoolchildren singing in a cornfield. Almost a year later, I just appreciate the arrangements and the accidental way the kids find new meaning in these well-trod songs. I mean, any record that can get me singing along to "Mandy" is truly remarkable. The recent VH1 special shed some light on the motivations behind the original recordings, too...

initial listen - classic. subsequent spins - DUD. hey, its kids singing popular songs of the time! and the arrangements are pretty cool! its amazing that kids did this! hey, what else is there to listen to?

Another thread about this album for the curious (with a nice analysis by Frank Kogan I hadn't read before.)
