Billboard Hot 100 New Entries, January 2000

I've been looking at old Hot 100s for decade-end purposes and thought it might be fun to try this. Month by month, the new entries for each Hot 100. Some of these were hits, some weren't, but some of these are obscure enough that any thoughts on them would be good to hear. And of course to see what your favorites are.

if I don't see more dissent, I'm going to have to check myself in (Matos W.K.), Sunday, 22 November 2009 06:31 (sixteen years ago)

Gonna vote for the Thong Song because it's an obvious classic; I remember looking through my 8th grade yearbook and counting the references people made to it in what they wrote (second place: "Stay NSYNC!" which replaced "HAGS" for a few girls.

Mariah is the other one I can imagine loving in 10 years but I'm not going to count it in this poll.

I went for N'Sync and regret it a little. Bunch I don't know, though I suppose that's what YouTube is for, right?

songs I would rep:

Backstreet Boys, “Show Me The Meaning Of Being Lonely” - One of their stronger ballads
Dr. Dre Featuring Eminem, “Forgot About Dre” - Back when I found Eminem tolerable I bumped this one like crazy
Lou Bega, “Tricky, Tricky” - Mambo No. 5 lite
Sammie, “I Like It” - Just occurred to me that this is the kid that's on Kiss Me Thru The Phone...I haven't heard this song in 10 years but I can still sing the chorus, catchy indeed
N Sync, “Bye Bye Bye” - Pretty sure I could beat anyone on ILX to a danceoff

In my drunken state, I wanna sing "Show Me The Meaning of Being Lonely."

"Untitled" without hesitation.

"Bye Bye Bye"

omicron deserved 51 (Curt1s Stephens), Sunday, 22 November 2009 08:02 (sixteen years ago)

Was going back and forth between "Do It Again" and "How Does It Feel", but since Euler gave one to D, I'll give one to Jay.

I love "Untitled" and "Thong Song" and "Breathe And Stop," but I had to go with "What's My Name," that song is incredible and DMX was never better

Looking thru old Billboard charts for decade-end. Wow: Sisqo scored with ballads. ("Incomplete" entered Hot 100 on June 26, 2000, at 77.)

johnny crunch, Sunday, 22 November 2009 19:01 (sixteen years ago)

reminds me that i thought eminem got significantly shorted in the p4k top 500 of the decade. the degree to which encore onward has been so amazingly shitty has really clouded ppl's memories

johnny crunch, Sunday, 22 November 2009 19:13 (sixteen years ago)

really surprised that i've never heard OF some of these. wtf is that aaliyah song!!!

why did the mariah song chart in 2000?

1. d'angelo
2. jay-z
3. sisqo
4. backstreet boys (amazing harmonies! serious heartbreak pop. this was released on valentine's day in the UK)
5. q-tip
6. dr dre (liked it a lot more at the time)

lex pretend, Sunday, 22 November 2009 19:14 (sixteen years ago)

why did the mariah song chart in 2000?

The dates are cover dates of the issues, meaning when they go off the stands. In reality they're always a couple weeks behind what actually happens, but for simplicity's sake I'm just going on them as is.

if I don't see more dissent, I'm going to have to check myself in (Matos W.K.), Sunday, 22 November 2009 21:57 (sixteen years ago)

I think the question is more of a "Why did a Mariah song from 1994 chart in 2000?" thing, the reason being that it was never elligible for the charts prior to 1999, when Billboard changed their rules to allow songs without physical singles to chart.

randomly I heard "From the Bottom of my Broken Heart" in the grocery store today...quite startling to compare how much vocal affect she was going for back then versus today.

Also idk why every other country got "Born to Make You Happy" as a single instead.
