Now that I know that these are two separate songs I'd like to know which one is better. Here is the Bobby Timmons composition as done by Art Blakey & The Jazz Messengers

and here is the Mingus composition

I have a feeling most people are going to go with the Mingus cop show bari and vote against the corny jazz D-bag standard. But we'll see.

Benny Golson is burning it up.

"the corny jazz D-bag standard"

i might wanna say mingus (kinda torn tbh), but this, this is just so so so just so just ghyeagh! THIS MUST NOT STAND. going with blakey in the name of justice and decency. which is to say timmons, even if mingus does have the composer/performer edge here.

"the corny jazz D-bag standard"
lol, that is ridic. Dunno how anyone could not like that song -- it's everything good about late 50s hard bop condensed into one tune.

^^^This

Plus it's one of Blakey's signature tunes against not one of my favorite Mingus tunes.

timmons version - original recording is a stone classic, better than the mingus one, but yeah it's a pretty worn-out jam session standard.

mingus version - don't really like the version in the first post, the one on "blues & roots" has a lot more simmer instead of jass sass. i like it lots but not as much as the art blakey recording.

hey trader joe's! i've got the new steely dan. (Jordan), Tuesday, 24 November 2009 18:33 (sixteen years ago)

Yeah, I agree that the Timmons trio version is even better than the Blakey ( I assume you meant Blakey) one. I love the sound of that trio in general - so crisp.

Dunno, I love that Blakey version -- as noted upthread, Lee Morgan sounds so good on his solo. What was he at that point, 18 years old?

"the corny jazz D-bag standard"

Ha. I just put that there to rouse to Timmons voters to be more vocal and offset any potential Mingus silent majority of lurkers. (Also because I knew Jordan would say something like "man, I played that Timmons song a million times in Jazz 101 band practice.") I decided I am going to vote for the Timmons composition, especially after recently relistening to the Lambert, Hendricks and Ross version.
