Albums least likely or deserving of a 33 1/3 book

I don't necessarily mean albums that are out and out bad (there's no need to have heard them), just those that you could never realistically picture being part of the series due to being almost comically unloved/under-appreciated/under-purchased. I wish someone would develop a website to generate 33 1/3 cover designs for such albums:

Least-likely or staggeringly unsuitable would be the criteria. Something like this:

I can accept "least likely" as productive of gentle lols here but "least deserving" wd be a bullshit position imo.

I don't know if I'm suppose to find a silly album or an album I really love that has zero chance of ever getting written about. I guess I'm going with the latter: the first Masters of Reality album.

mookieproof, Wednesday, 25 November 2009 16:47 (sixteen years ago)

Didn't Celine Dion get a book in the series? Didn't people love it? These books are as much about the authors relationship with the album and their ability to write, not necessarily who good the music sounds.

That said, I could write one on Echo & The Bunnymen - Reverberation. I'm still the only person I know who actually liked that album when it came out. Haven't played it since then either, so maybe I was wrong.

9-1 changed everything (DJ Mencap), Wednesday, 25 November 2009 17:01 (sixteen years ago)

brotherlovesdub: my picks were because they are albums that no-one loves and don't have any story to them (compared to older busta albums etc.). Maybe you could write 100 pages on "why having a bunch of kinda dull nu metal guest stars and no real ideas made a dull/pointless run-dmc album" but i'd be v. surprised if you could do a 100 pages on that and make it interesting and worth reading.

I can't imagine 100 pages on Celine Dion being anything more than a manifesto to make you hate French Canadians and pop radio.

brotherlovesdub, Wednesday, 25 November 2009 19:58 (sixteen years ago)

was actually 100 pages of 'why do i hate french canadians and pop radio.' picking that busta album wouldn't be 'why do i hate hiphop and black folk', it would be 'why do i hate this mediocre album that even busta fans haven't listened to since it was released?'

life is too short and the list of books I haven't read is too long to even contemplate reading something - no matter how brilliant - about celine dion.

Is Songs of Faith and Devotion a serious pick? It must have given rise to as many terrible stories as any album ever. (I see that's the live version, but that goes even more so, if anything)

Ismael Klata, Wednesday, 25 November 2009 20:09 (sixteen years ago)

That Celine Dion book is easily the best in the series, that I've read. It's much more about the construction of taste--how we arrive at such conclusions as "life's too short to read about Celine Dion"--than it is about Celine Dion herself.

Super Not, Wednesday, 25 November 2009 20:13 (sixteen years ago)

Right, so aren't the rest of these albums equally viable in the unexpected gems department?

brotherlovesdub, Wednesday, 25 November 2009 20:16 (sixteen years ago)

xpost

Here's how I arrived at that conclusion: I listened to Celine Dion's music and thought it sucked.

chief rocker frankie crocker (m coleman), Wednesday, 25 November 2009 20:16 (sixteen years ago)

i don't think the series needs more "ok this isn't actually about the album but bear with me" books -- 1 was enough

burr so icey to me (some dude), Wednesday, 25 November 2009 20:17 (sixteen years ago)

OTM. write a serious book about aesthetics instead of pulling a fast one on celine dion fans

chief rocker frankie crocker (m coleman), Wednesday, 25 November 2009 20:20 (sixteen years ago)

OTOH a shortish book about a fantastically bad album, or a bizarre misfire, could be more compelling than another masterpiece reconsidered.

chief rocker frankie crocker (m coleman), Wednesday, 25 November 2009 20:29 (sixteen years ago)

I think there's more than 1 xp - my copy of 'Meat Is Murder' didn't even get close to dealing with the album by the time I threw it away

It's somehow appropriate that my Glands post mysteriously vanished. I'll try again.

kornrulez6969, Wednesday, 25 November 2009 20:33 (sixteen years ago)

I doubt Celine Dion fans are cuing up to buy 33 1/3 books. And Wilson's certainly IS "a serious book about aesthetics," of which the world arguably doesn't need more either.

I dunno. Wilson's is an excellent book, on its own terms. Some of the others I've read, about artists/albums I actually care about, not so much.

I definitely agree about fantastically bad/bizarre misfire being more compelling than one more contemplation of a classic, though.

Super Not, Wednesday, 25 November 2009 20:49 (sixteen years ago)

Yeah, I've never heard it tbh, it just seems like a really pointless release. The other one of mine that disappeared was Simple Minds - Neon Lights.

Gavin in Leeds, Wednesday, 25 November 2009 20:51 (sixteen years ago)

I haven't heard the live album but I did have the dvd, which has some terrific performances and not a few laughs (some even intentional). They had pretty good aesthetics around that time. I gather that offstage Dave was way out beyond the furthest reaches of the rock n roll lifestyle by that point. So it'd probably make an excellent book, but it'd be pretty harrowing stuff.

Ismael Klata, Wednesday, 25 November 2009 21:06 (sixteen years ago)

This is totally predictable for me, but I too would love to read a 33 1/3 on Sammy. Actually, bet it would be pretty interesting...

Cleveland Spider Cupid Childs (los blue jeans), Thursday, 26 November 2009 02:02 (sixteen years ago)

It would be entertaining to read about a disaster of an album--one where the artist went in with grandiose ideas and came out with garbage. I read a book about the "Bonfire of the Vanities" movie and it was more interesting than ones I've read about great films.

I can't think of any off the top of my head, except maybe "The Elder."
