I've been listening to a lot of jazz duos lately. Something nice about hearing two instrumentalists play off each other -- messing with tempos, melodies, counterharmonies in ways they might not be able to with a bigger group.http://shinshu.fm/MHz/80.00/images/P95eUkwX.jpghttp://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/31KBPTYKXYL._SL500_AA240_.jpghttp://3.bp.blogspot.com/_LnZfLQmOmEs/SoTkZxQxTEI/AAAAAAAAAUA/jYc4G3wl0n0/s320/albumcoverJohnColtrane-InterstellarSpace.jpgWhat are some other good ones?

Charlie Haden's "Closeness" & "Golden Number" comes to mind, also the Herbie Hancock/Wayne Shorter's disc "1+1" has its moments as well.

oh yeah, is "Golden Number" the one with Haden playing w/ various duos (Cherry, Ornette, etc.?)? I think destination out posted some of that a few years back. Is that out of print too?

While a lot of these are good, I feel like I rarely come across a duo record that I wouldn't prefer with another instrument. Interstellar Space might be the exception.

I can't believe we haven't mentioned MU yet.
Also Dewey Redman & Ed Blackwell at Willisau is worth seeking.

Yeah, MU is awesome. Haven't heard the Redman/Blackwell thing, though Blackwell seems to excel at this sort of playing. Going way back, there's of course Earl Hines and Louis Armstrong doing "Weather Bird".

I'll rep for Chops, by Joe Pass & Niels-Henning Ørsted Pedersen.

The Bill Dixon/Tony Oxley duo records (Papyrus, vols I & II) are tremendous. The Penguin Guide To Jazz' review sums it up nicely: "...except...except...there is so little music of this sort."
