the shittiness of the show wasn't really their fault except that they didn't draw anyone (like literally no one). they're an ok band, mostly boring but they've got their moments

I have never heard of this. That is funny to know that n/a's thread was about them though. This reminds me of the first Shins record. It reminds me of a lot of stuff I guess. Not bad.

I just heard their album--don't know if I like it, but it's cool that the singer sometimes sounds like he wants to be in Toto. Also, one song sounded like a complete rip from Arcade Fire.

Yeah, I just got this. I kind of dig it - a lot of the guitar lines remind me of the Cure.

I'm going to give it more of a listen this weekend. Will report back.

I really like this too, not that they sound a lot like Real Estate but some of the songs put me in the same sort of mindframe.

Like this, thanks. WPB is just the kind of bad place that should have a good band. Have listened to "Swim" and "Twin Peaks" and don't really get how people are not hearing Weezer here. But also, you know, the Kinks. Ok, maybe that was just "Twin Peaks."

man, i love indie rock! i'm listening to Vampire Weekend right now. but whatever Surfer Blood song I heard sounded like the sort of faceless, boring indie that people have every right to call bullshit on, and there's so much other good shit out there that I just don't feel like giving this band's music anymore listening time.

i expect i'm going to like this album a lot. pitchfork are v good at having their fingers in the right pies at just the right moment when it comes to simple indieish guitar pop. pains of being pure at heart was one of my favourite albums last year and it got an identical rating, and came out in the same week i think. also since when is "it sounds like the blue album" a knock on an album?

Its simple guitar pop, pretty much. I don't feel like there are any higher aspirations here. This ain't album of the year material, but it sounds pretty good to me right now. I still don't hear Weezer in this though.

Pains totally got an 8.4. Waaayyyyy better than Surfer's 8.2.

Looked up some songs on youtube and agree w the whole 'boring indie rock' thing. Don't hear Weezer....maybe I need to hear the actual record rather than these live takes. None of these songs go anywhere the near Blue Album tho.

The only song that really reminds of Weezer is "Floating Vibes" the oohhhh's and the vocal melody and the solo that apes the vocal line minus a slight change at the end. This album is ok. Like, it's just kind of there, and that's it.

Why the hell would you evaluate an album based on YouTube live recordings?!

This is a great record. Def Weezer vibe, with various 2010 US guitar-indie signposts too, obv.

i guess like, destroyer, mountain goats would fall into boring indie territory. i don't really have any specific bands in mind though, it's more that of all genres indie is operates really nicely when it's a bit dull. i've yet to listen to this surfer blood record though, i might even agree with you.

I think Surfer Blood reminds me more of the Tapes n Tapes of 2010, not as much musically, but they feel like a reincarnation otherwise...

the tapes n tapes record is good but it's just a plain indie rock record, to the core. that stuff isn't really built for the internet hype cycle. i don't think anyone is gonna care about the second surfer blood record, if anyone even cares about this one.

hahah i just found out my friends' band is opening for these guys next month at a venue that's an extremely short walk from my house.

Similar circumstances brought them to this point, they seem to be a similar band with boring-cause-they're-obvious influences... right, plain indie rock.

Drummer from "The Girls at Dawn" pitches in on vocals. I don't agree with her pronunciation of the word "love," but I'm kind of a purist when it comes to this song.

I don't know if anyone cares, but the EP (Tarot Classics) is superb -- I have a feeling these guys are just going to record great pop songs and tour tiny venues forever

Setting aside the off-record crap, this new record pretty much sucks. Moving to L.A., signing to Warner, and getting Gil Norton to produce your record all get rendered meaningless when you forget how to write catchy tunes.

i like the new record, it's not incredible but it's enjoyable and the hooks are there to my ears. sounds a lot like pinback except for the first track, which is ok by me

saw these guys open for trail of dead two years ago. most of the (young) crowd was there to see them and left after they played. the frontman's obnoxiousness was endearing at first and quickly wore thin as their set went on. first three or four songs were really nice then they all started to sound the same. their single 'swim' is just 'sweet jane'

Listening to the new album right now. It's good!

Have not tired of "Swim." If I were to reject all songs that were just "Sweet Jane" I would lose a lot of stuff I liked.

If I still cared about Weezer, this is the record I would want Weezer to be making in 2013, if that makes sense
