I don't know -- I kinda prefer Vamire Weekend.

Mordy, Wednesday, 25 November 2009 22:57 (sixteen years ago)

Zeno, Wednesday, 25 November 2009 22:58 (sixteen years ago)

Surer Blood is very goth.

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 25 November 2009 22:59 (sixteen years ago)

ha my band opened for these dudes at the show chronicled here:

show dread

the shittiness of the show wasn't really their fault except that they didn't draw anyone (like literally no one). they're an ok band, mostly boring but they've got their moments

congratulations (n/a), Wednesday, 25 November 2009 23:20 (sixteen years ago)

I have never heard of this. That is funny to know that n/a's thread was about them though. This reminds me of the first Shins record. It reminds me of a lot of stuff I guess. Not bad.

St3ve Go1db3rg, Thursday, 26 November 2009 00:55 (sixteen years ago)

one month passes...

I just heard their album--don't know if I like it, but it's cool that the singer sometimes sounds like he wants to be in Toto. Also, one song sounded like a complete rip from Arcade Fire.

President Keyes, Monday, 4 January 2010 17:33 (sixteen years ago)

two weeks pass...

Yeah, I just got this. I kind of dig it - a lot of the guitar lines remind me of the Cure.

I'm going to give it more of a listen this weekend. Will report back.

Clerk all KNOWIN (B.L.A.M.), Friday, 22 January 2010 18:44 (sixteen years ago)

I really like this too, not that they sound a lot like Real Estate but some of the songs put me in the same sort of mindframe.

you gone float up with it (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Friday, 22 January 2010 18:46 (sixteen years ago)

this kind of sounded like blue album weezer but shitty to me--i assume i am missing something

call all destroyer, Friday, 22 January 2010 18:48 (sixteen years ago)

Really don't hear Weezer in these guys at all.

you gone float up with it (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Friday, 22 January 2010 18:50 (sixteen years ago)

good thing only the first song is Weezer-y and that's about it.

nothing to special here, but very catchy stuff. sometimes thats more than enough.

Zeno, Friday, 22 January 2010 18:57 (sixteen years ago)

this is lame for the most part but i dig "slow jabroni"

k3vin k., Sunday, 24 January 2010 19:45 (sixteen years ago)

Uninteresting.

BTW, I'm frightfully middle-class (chap), Sunday, 24 January 2010 19:50 (sixteen years ago)

i have this band to thank for reinserting the word (and the whole concept/ethos, really) of "jabroni" back into my consciousness. they used to be called "jabroni sandwich" which is just ... magical.

uptown churl, Sunday, 24 January 2010 21:39 (sixteen years ago)

Like this, thanks. WPB is just the kind of bad place that should have a good band. Have listened to "Swim" and "Twin Peaks" and don't really get how people are not hearing Weezer here. But also, you know, the Kinks. Ok, maybe that was just "Twin Peaks."

Guayaquil (eephus!), Sunday, 24 January 2010 22:25 (sixteen years ago)

i listened to whatever their "big song" is, and it sure sounded like indie rock to me.

kshighway (ksh), Sunday, 24 January 2010 22:43 (sixteen years ago)

Super boring and unmemorable, I thought.

Mordy, Sunday, 24 January 2010 22:43 (sixteen years ago)

ksh not liking it for being indie rock is funny but he's right to an extent

k3vin k., Sunday, 24 January 2010 22:56 (sixteen years ago)

man, i love indie rock! i'm listening to Vampire Weekend right now. but whatever Surfer Blood song I heard sounded like the sort of faceless, boring indie that people have every right to call bullshit on, and there's so much other good shit out there that I just don't feel like giving this band's music anymore listening time.

kshighway (ksh), Sunday, 24 January 2010 23:08 (sixteen years ago)

complaining that indie sounds like indie

plaxico (I know, right?), Sunday, 24 January 2010 23:09 (sixteen years ago)

I don't think ksh knows pitchfork gave it the sacred BNM! How dare you question this.

kshighway (ksh), Sunday, 24 January 2010 23:47 (sixteen years ago)

i expect i'm going to like this album a lot. pitchfork are v good at having their fingers in the right pies at just the right moment when it comes to simple indieish guitar pop. pains of being pure at heart was one of my favourite albums last year and it got an identical rating, and came out in the same week i think. also since when is "it sounds like the blue album" a knock on an album?

samosa gibreel, Monday, 25 January 2010 02:44 (sixteen years ago)

Its simple guitar pop, pretty much. I don't feel like there are any higher aspirations here. This ain't album of the year material, but it sounds pretty good to me right now. I still don't hear Weezer in this though.

you gone float up with it (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Monday, 25 January 2010 02:51 (sixteen years ago)

Pains totally got an 8.4. Waaayyyyy better than Surfer's 8.2.

Evan, Monday, 25 January 2010 03:38 (sixteen years ago)

complaining that indie sounds like indie

indie schmindie.

Daniel, Esq., Monday, 25 January 2010 03:40 (sixteen years ago)

Looked up some songs on youtube and agree w the whole 'boring indie rock' thing. Don't hear Weezer....maybe I need to hear the actual record rather than these live takes. None of these songs go anywhere the near Blue Album tho.

Adam Bruneau, Monday, 25 January 2010 04:10 (sixteen years ago)

The only song that really reminds of Weezer is "Floating Vibes" the oohhhh's and the vocal melody and the solo that apes the vocal line minus a slight change at the end. This album is ok. Like, it's just kind of there, and that's it.

jennaversicolor, Tuesday, 26 January 2010 18:09 (sixteen years ago)

Why the hell would you evaluate an album based on YouTube live recordings?!

This is a great record. Def Weezer vibe, with various 2010 US guitar-indie signposts too, obv.

i like boring indie, and i'm kind of sad to hear that kshighway doesn't

samosa gibreel, Wednesday, 27 January 2010 00:02 (sixteen years ago)

what bands do you consider "boring indie"?

kshighway (ksh), Wednesday, 27 January 2010 00:05 (sixteen years ago)

i guess like, destroyer, mountain goats would fall into boring indie territory. i don't really have any specific bands in mind though, it's more that of all genres indie is operates really nicely when it's a bit dull. i've yet to listen to this surfer blood record though, i might even agree with you.

samosa gibreel, Wednesday, 27 January 2010 00:39 (sixteen years ago)

i don't think either of those bands are boring, but i really love both of them

kshighway (ksh), Wednesday, 27 January 2010 00:41 (sixteen years ago)

See, people?
Why is Indie Rock so impotent and boring right now? (June 2009)

Back Like That (makeitpop), Wednesday, 27 January 2010 00:49 (sixteen years ago)

They have more personality than Vampire Weekend I'd say. Contra is not bad, but it's basically shopping mall music.

Now, Wednesday, 27 January 2010 02:00 (sixteen years ago)

yeah if the mall is full of deaf, brain dead zombies

that sex version of "blue thunder." (Mr. Que), Wednesday, 27 January 2010 02:07 (sixteen years ago)

I think Surfer Blood reminds me more of the Tapes n Tapes of 2010, not as much musically, but they feel like a reincarnation otherwise...

Evan, Thursday, 4 February 2010 03:35 (sixteen years ago)

i.e., an overhyped flash-in-the-pan?

Daniel, Esq., Thursday, 4 February 2010 03:38 (sixteen years ago)

the tapes n tapes record is good but it's just a plain indie rock record, to the core. that stuff isn't really built for the internet hype cycle. i don't think anyone is gonna care about the second surfer blood record, if anyone even cares about this one.

kshighway (ksh), Thursday, 4 February 2010 03:41 (sixteen years ago)

hahah i just found out my friends' band is opening for these guys next month at a venue that's an extremely short walk from my house.

call all destroyer, Thursday, 4 February 2010 03:42 (sixteen years ago)

Similar circumstances brought them to this point, they seem to be a similar band with boring-cause-they're-obvious influences... right, plain indie rock.

Evan, Thursday, 4 February 2010 03:44 (sixteen years ago)

the same thing is gonna happen to cymbals eat guitars

ratface killah (J0rdan S.), Thursday, 4 February 2010 03:48 (sixteen years ago)

well theyre not exactly headlining festivals and shit

rasta batman gigolo (k3vin k.), Thursday, 4 February 2010 03:54 (sixteen years ago)

anyway that first tapes n tapes album is awesome, way better than this

rasta batman gigolo (k3vin k.), Thursday, 4 February 2010 03:54 (sixteen years ago)

they should all merge into one nondescript band (Cymbals Eat Tapes 'N Surfers).

Daniel, Esq., Thursday, 4 February 2010 03:56 (sixteen years ago)

Clap Your Tapes Say Surf

kshighway (ksh), Thursday, 4 February 2010 04:00 (sixteen years ago)

cymbals eat guitars is the worst pitchfork indie rock pick since i've started reading the site, it's astounding how terrible their album is.

Surfer Blood turns in a faithful but winning cover of "Gigantic":

http://stereogum.com/738192/watch-surfer-blood-cover-the-pixies/video/

Drummer from "The Girls at Dawn" pitches in on vocals. I don't agree with her pronunciation of the word "love," but I'm kind of a purist when it comes to this song.

Astro Coast still sounds great to me. There's apparently a new EP, has anyone heard it?

I don't know if anyone cares, but the EP (Tarot Classics) is superb -- I have a feeling these guys are just going to record great pop songs and tour tiny venues forever

Setting aside the off-record crap, this new record pretty much sucks. Moving to L.A., signing to Warner, and getting Gil Norton to produce your record all get rendered meaningless when you forget how to write catchy tunes.

JACK SQUAT about these Charlie Nobodies (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Monday, 8 July 2013 16:45 (twelve years ago)

i like the new record, it's not incredible but it's enjoyable and the hooks are there to my ears. sounds a lot like pinback except for the first track, which is ok by me

ciderpress, Monday, 8 July 2013 17:08 (twelve years ago)

saw these guys open for trail of dead two years ago. most of the (young) crowd was there to see them and left after they played. the frontman's obnoxiousness was endearing at first and quickly wore thin as their set went on. first three or four songs were really nice then they all started to sound the same. their single 'swim' is just 'sweet jane'

i also enjoy in line skateing (spazzmatazz), Monday, 8 July 2013 21:05 (twelve years ago)

two weeks pass...

Listening to the new album right now. It's good!

Have not tired of "Swim." If I were to reject all songs that were just "Sweet Jane" I would lose a lot of stuff I liked.

Guayaquil (eephus!), Wednesday, 24 July 2013 18:56 (twelve years ago)

If I still cared about Weezer, this is the record I would want Weezer to be making in 2013, if that makes sense

Guayaquil (eephus!), Wednesday, 24 July 2013 20:50 (twelve years ago)

yeah damn this is totally a weezer record

hello :) (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Wednesday, 24 July 2013 23:07 (twelve years ago)

after 3 listens, first track ("demon dance") and "I was wrong" the standouts

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T99JYIq0Xtk

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=79FzA_8FhC8

that both these songs are quite weezery cannot be denied, surely "i was wrong" more so
