This is actually unpossible.

Could go with "Space Oddity", "Width", "Watch That Man", "Station", "Speed of Life", "Fantastic Voyage" or "It's No Game", so fuck knows tbh.

Twisted Hipster (Noodle Vague), Sunday, 29 November 2009 14:31 (sixteen years ago)

Strictly if you played fair and went "Future Legend" into "Diamond Dogs" that cd be a proper contender too.

Twisted Hipster (Noodle Vague), Sunday, 29 November 2009 14:32 (sixteen years ago)

1) young americans.
2) the rest.

The N'Gog of the Marriage (a hoy hoy), Sunday, 29 November 2009 14:32 (sixteen years ago)

Man I need to listen to Diamond Dog now.

Twisted Hipster (Noodle Vague), Sunday, 29 November 2009 14:32 (sixteen years ago)

This is an interesting one, since few Bowie openers are among my favorites of his. So I'd go with either "Changes," "Five Years" or "Modern Love."

Josh in Chicago, Sunday, 29 November 2009 14:33 (sixteen years ago)

this is so fucking easy, width of a circle

farting irl (cankles), Sunday, 29 November 2009 14:33 (sixteen years ago)

It's too late to be hateful.

Euler, Sunday, 29 November 2009 14:33 (sixteen years ago)

I knew this would be a bit fiendish. I am torn between Fantastic Voyage and Five Years, but there are many phenomenal songs here.

Communi-Bear Silo State (chap), Sunday, 29 November 2009 14:34 (sixteen years ago)

Station To Station 4EVA!!!

kornrulez6969, Sunday, 29 November 2009 14:39 (sixteen years ago)

"Station To Station" by such a large margin the others aren't even visible. And I really like some of the other openers - "Five Years" is a top ten, maybe top five Bowie track for me. This poll reminds me Bowie really new how to sequence an album - he sets the mood of each quite succinctly.

EZ Snappin, Sunday, 29 November 2009 14:42 (sixteen years ago)

Station to Station's a cracker once it gets going, I just find that build up too looooong I'm afraid.

Communi-Bear Silo State (chap), Sunday, 29 November 2009 14:45 (sixteen years ago)

I like 'Speed of Life' as an opener, rather than 'Young Americans' or 'Station to Station' which I just like as epic songs.

Ismael Klata, Sunday, 29 November 2009 15:12 (sixteen years ago)

I still get that feeling I got when I was a teenager and first heard "I kiss you, you're beautiful", so it's Five Years for me. I do like a bit of drama.

Madchen, Sunday, 29 November 2009 16:08 (sixteen years ago)

"Beauty and the Beast" should get at least one vote, so I'll be it.

I'm going with Width of a Circle.

dan selzer, Sunday, 29 November 2009 17:54 (sixteen years ago)

Fife Years for me.

The bugger in the short sleeves (NickB), Sunday, 29 November 2009 18:04 (sixteen years ago)

same here. who'd of thought declaring an apocalyptic prediction would be such a great way to start off an album.

brooklyn we go ham (samosa gibreel), Sunday, 29 November 2009 18:11 (sixteen years ago)

It's No Game for me, makes me sad that he never really did more songs like that.

MaresNest, Sunday, 29 November 2009 19:08 (sixteen years ago)

Between Station & Young Americans for me, tho I can't decide which one. Might need the coin toss

Bill E, Sunday, 29 November 2009 20:20 (sixteen years ago)

Heroes should be the best """closer"""

meisenfek, Sunday, 29 November 2009 20:26 (sixteen years ago)

Watch That Man, alternatively Fantastic Voyage.

so says surgeon snoball (snoball), Sunday, 29 November 2009 20:27 (sixteen years ago)

to be insulted by these fascists, it's so degrading

Milton Parker, Sunday, 29 November 2009 20:39 (sixteen years ago)

off topic, but has anyone else ever thought that Roxy Music's Manifesto sounds like a Bowie opener?

nerve_pylon, Sunday, 29 November 2009 20:54 (sixteen years ago)

Well, in a sense, it's Bryan Ferry's "Station to Station," innit?

Hell is other people. In an ILE film forum. (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Sunday, 29 November 2009 21:02 (sixteen years ago)

I still get that feeling I got when I was a teenager and first heard "I kiss you, you're beautiful", so it's Five Years for me.

^^^definitely this – I can't not sing along with those lines (usually while pumping my fist in the air)

mascara and ties (Abbott), Sunday, 29 November 2009 21:26 (sixteen years ago)

I have a similar thing with "Smiling and waving and looking so fine".

Communi-Bear Silo State (chap), Sunday, 29 November 2009 21:27 (sixteen years ago)

"Space Oddity" wasn't all that much of an album, but as a track, it beats pretty much everything. Although "Station To Station" surely comes close, being the highlight of that album and all.

Tied Up In Geir (Geir Hongro), Monday, 30 November 2009 00:23 (sixteen years ago)

bump

Communi-Bear Silo State (chap), Wednesday, 2 December 2009 12:18 (sixteen years ago)

Toughie, but nothing will ever trump "Future Legend" for me.

Alex in NYC, Wednesday, 2 December 2009 12:19 (sixteen years ago)

...although "Station to Station" comes damn close.

Alex in NYC, Wednesday, 2 December 2009 12:19 (sixteen years ago)

Am I the only person who quite likes Little Wonder? It's certainly got the 'oh no, grandad's listening to jungle' embarrassment factor, but it's actually a pretty good tune.

Communi-Bear Silo State (chap), Wednesday, 2 December 2009 12:21 (sixteen years ago)

the retuuuuuuuuuhrn of the thin white duke

(etc.)

thomp, Wednesday, 2 December 2009 12:30 (sixteen years ago)

XP Nope, I like Little Wonder, it's pretty ridiculous musically and lyrically, but the big heavy 'So Faaar Awaaay' section is really great.

MaresNest, Wednesday, 2 December 2009 12:40 (sixteen years ago)

I quite like "Little Wonder" (and Earthling as a whole), but I can't in good conscience vote for it here.

EZ Snappin, Wednesday, 2 December 2009 12:41 (sixteen years ago)

Oh yeah, there's no way I'd vote for it.

Communi-Bear Silo State (chap), Wednesday, 2 December 2009 12:42 (sixteen years ago)

Went for Fantastic Voyage in fact.

Communi-Bear Silo State (chap), Wednesday, 2 December 2009 12:44 (sixteen years ago)

'oh no, grandad's listening to jungle'

Surprised that Clive Dunn never got in on this.

so says surgeon snoball (snoball), Wednesday, 2 December 2009 12:50 (sixteen years ago)

I love the way in which "Speed of Life" non-announces itself and just before you start picking it up from whatever's going on around you the volume goes up and bam - glorious synths join the harmonizered drums. Awesome. (it sort of does the same thing "Station to Station" does in 1/10 of the time)

Having said that, so many of his openers do great things soundwise, making your ears go 'huh' in the way album openers should.

willem, Wednesday, 2 December 2009 12:59 (sixteen years ago)

"Beauty and the Beast" should get at least one vote, so I'll be it.

That's two votes, for me it's his best opener just beating Station to Station. "Heroes" is his best album in my opinion by quite a long way.

Kitchen Person, Wednesday, 2 December 2009 13:29 (sixteen years ago)

"It's No Game" for me

Elvis Telecom, Wednesday, 2 December 2009 18:32 (sixteen years ago)

Didn't realise that 'It's No Game' dates back to the Space Oddity era, sounds good in its original take, although a very different vibe to it.

Holy shit, "I'm Tired of My Life" just blew my mind!

Dave Depper (Davey D), Thursday, 3 December 2009 02:24 (sixteen years ago)

"Watch that man" as a standalone song, 'cuz stationtostation is just such a complete masterwerk (as a ablum)

controlled noise pollution (outdoor_miner), Thursday, 3 December 2009 02:41 (sixteen years ago)

"New Killer Star" is a new killer opener too! Best song on the album too.

Hell is other people. In an ILE film forum. (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 3 December 2009 02:48 (sixteen years ago)

Wait, I love when he says, "Never say anything nice again, how can I?"

bamcquern, Thursday, 3 December 2009 03:05 (sixteen years ago)

Sunday is also really good

akm, Thursday, 3 December 2009 05:03 (sixteen years ago)

Although there's some better tracks there, "Five Years" serves as the best opener.

dan138zig (Durrr Durrr Durrrrrr), Thursday, 3 December 2009 05:22 (sixteen years ago)

SO wanted to vote for Uncle Arthur....

but I went for Speed Of Life instead - Willem OTM.

Dr.C, Thursday, 3 December 2009 09:42 (sixteen years ago)

I am torn between Fantastic Voyage and Five Years

Yes

Although there's some better tracks there, "Five Years" serves as the best opener.

And yes again.

E Poxy Thee Thule (Tom D.), Thursday, 3 December 2009 10:37 (sixteen years ago)

Station to Station's a cracker once it gets going, I just find that build up too looooong I'm afraid.

Thread on opening tracks that are the longest tracks on an album anyone?

E Poxy Thee Thule (Tom D.), Thursday, 3 December 2009 12:36 (sixteen years ago)

Another vote for Speed Of Life here, and willem etc very much OTM

tomofthenest, Thursday, 3 December 2009 12:45 (sixteen years ago)

System, Friday, 4 December 2009 00:01 (sixteen years ago)

i didnt vote so consider a tie between 5 years and StS

Zeno, Friday, 4 December 2009 00:07 (sixteen years ago)

I didn't either so consider StS winning anyway.

Dave Depper (Davey D), Friday, 4 December 2009 00:11 (sixteen years ago)

so i'd bring a friend to vote
