ok i only got turned onto this recently, via some mentions here and elsewhere, but this album is fucking great. and so they deserve a thread

http://www.mindovermetal.org/blog/wp-content/uploads/2009/04/gaywitchabortion-maverick.jpg

their new thing with halo of flies is good too. i assume some of the minnesota ilxors can fill in the blanks on these dudes. but really this stuff gets close to a sort of rock ideal for me.

hellzapoppa (tipsy mothra), Monday, 30 November 2009 04:07 (sixteen years ago)

by rock ideal, i mean loud, fast, short, taut, sort of nutso. that kind of ideal. i'd like to see them play.

hellzapoppa (tipsy mothra), Monday, 30 November 2009 04:08 (sixteen years ago)

"your own militia" is in the running for song-of-the-year for me.

hellzapoppa (tipsy mothra), Monday, 30 November 2009 04:10 (sixteen years ago)

saw them play (w/goole iirc) this summer, before no age. pretty good from what i recall but honestly it was a bit of a junkshow

crazy farting throwback jersey (gbx), Monday, 30 November 2009 04:14 (sixteen years ago)

i'm sure they're sloppier live than on the album. one thing about the record is how tight it is.

hellzapoppa (tipsy mothra), Monday, 30 November 2009 04:22 (sixteen years ago)

haha i just meant the general atmosphere was junkshowy, which why i can't totally recall the set: they weren't the focus of my attention

crazy farting throwback jersey (gbx), Monday, 30 November 2009 04:23 (sixteen years ago)

well they'd seem to lend themselves to that.

hellzapoppa (tipsy mothra), Monday, 30 November 2009 04:28 (sixteen years ago)

here's a good live vid. the drummer kicks ass, which is not-so-secret part of why i dig it

intrigued...

would know more

wrote a totally non-informative blog entry on them a while ago:

btw they are just as tight live as on record, it is kind of amazing.

pitiable ass (abanana), Monday, 30 November 2009 06:28 (sixteen years ago)

i was completely ready to just eyeroll them cuz of the name -- i expected either crappy deathmetal or some kind of "funny" rock music, but they're not any of that at all. it's nice to hear someone do the guitar-drums thing with a level of chops that really makes maximum use of the instruments. (i guess black keys have chops too, but they just don't interest me much.) the no age guys are ok on that front, but the gay witch abortioners are just really locked in.

hellzapoppa (tipsy mothra), Monday, 30 November 2009 06:44 (sixteen years ago)

hmph. listening to their myspace tracks. it's clear that they do well what rock is supposed to do, which is rock their flabby little asses off. but aside from the brick-chewing stuntwork, i'm not sure what to make of it. half speed lightning bolt? don't mean to write them off, cuz they sound as though they could tear a room down live, and i'll definitely keep my eyes peeled for shows, but i find myself wanting a little bit more sweet with the sour.

maybe i'm just too old & unstoned for this kinda thing...

a dimension that can only be accessed through self-immolation (contenderizer), Monday, 30 November 2009 07:12 (sixteen years ago)

and maybe i'm just not in the mood. shackleton & arthur russell are working much better for me tonite.

a dimension that can only be accessed through self-immolation (contenderizer), Monday, 30 November 2009 07:16 (sixteen years ago)

find myself wanting a little bit more sweet with the sour.

they have tunes, tho. they don't depend on them, exactly, but there's a good handful of them on the record. the last song's even kind of pretty. "half-speed lightning bolt" isn't a bad description really, they're more conventional-rock than lightning bolt in a lot of ways. but it's all short and punky. i think that's a big attraction for me. i have this thing for bands that can keep songs under 2 and a half minutes.

hellzapoppa (tipsy mothra), Monday, 30 November 2009 08:03 (sixteen years ago)

whoa, halo of flies + these guys, nuts!

Spotify's not hip. It's asking me if I meant Gal With Accordion (!)

Treblekicker, Monday, 30 November 2009 17:10 (sixteen years ago)

they're on a label so small my very hip record store couldn't get me a copy, so I'm not surprised they aren't on Spotify. They are, however, on MySpace with a handful of tracks.

sean walker has been an amazing drummer in mpls for so long.

btw to my mple peeps, STNNNG with their new drummer is fucking on FIRE btw. played a couple shows so far

Listening now. Interesting stuff. The warped guitar sounds remind me a bit of The Butthole Surfers. Love this sleeve art. Fits the music well don't you think?

ok after the last show, i would say at this point they are actually much tighter live than on the record - its fucking scary how dead on they are

^^Is this in the right thread?

EZ Snappin, Thursday, 21 January 2010 19:40 (sixteen years ago)

oh haha i was talking about the Halo Of Flies collab, but i can see where High On Fire would prob be the usual thing for that abbreviation

D@n P3rry is the drummer on Muse Sick-n-Hour Mess Age (jjjusten), Thursday, 21 January 2010 19:43 (sixteen years ago)

would enjoy a Gay Witch Abortion/High On Fire collab tho

D@n P3rry is the drummer on Muse Sick-n-Hour Mess Age (jjjusten), Thursday, 21 January 2010 19:43 (sixteen years ago)

Didn't know they did a Halo Of Flies collaboration. What's the issue with it?

I'd love Matt Pike singing for these guys. Vocals are the weakest bit by such a huge margin I kind of wish they would just shut up.

EZ Snappin, Thursday, 21 January 2010 19:45 (sixteen years ago)

yeah i do not like the vocals on the album, such a throwaway - its better live because you can kind of tell they dont really care that much about them either

D@n P3rry is the drummer on Muse Sick-n-Hour Mess Age (jjjusten), Thursday, 21 January 2010 19:47 (sixteen years ago)

i just did a fast sample spin (and dont get me wrong i dig both bands) and it just seemed needlessly sloppy and messy, which is not at all what appeals about GWA

D@n P3rry is the drummer on Muse Sick-n-Hour Mess Age (jjjusten), Thursday, 21 January 2010 19:48 (sixteen years ago)

Ugh. Not a fan of sloppy abortions.

EZ Snappin, Thursday, 21 January 2010 19:50 (sixteen years ago)

one month passes...

Gay Witch Abortion just got mentioned on All Songs Considered! Oh, wait, they just made fun of their name and dismissed them out of hand. Bad Bob, bad.

EZ Snappin, Wednesday, 10 March 2010 00:51 (sixteen years ago)

man I can't believe people are makin fun of Gay Witch Abortion

Lee Dorrian Gray (J0hn D.), Wednesday, 10 March 2010 00:56 (sixteen years ago)

Bob Boilen, Carrie Brownstein, Robin Hilton and Stephen Thompson are meanies.

EZ Snappin, Wednesday, 10 March 2010 01:01 (sixteen years ago)

how can carrie brownstein not like gay witch abortion, what's wrong with her?

hellzapoppa (tipsy mothra), Wednesday, 10 March 2010 04:17 (sixteen years ago)

Honestly, I don't think any of them gave it a listen. They just ripped on it while they were ripping on all this bands with Dragon, Black, Bear and the like in their names.

We should send them a email with a link to this thread and complain that they are a bunch of ninnies.

EZ Snappin, Wednesday, 10 March 2010 04:59 (sixteen years ago)

ugh, i thought this was metal and neglected to check out this thread til now. between mayyors, lightning bolt and future of the left, nasty distorted bass punk is quickly becoming my new favourite genre.

hot dub grime machine (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Tuesday, 20 July 2010 15:45 (fifteen years ago)

wait was the other non-guzzazrd b33m4n brother in king can? danny? i think i ended up knowing them because i was dating his ex - not sure he was a big fan of me tbh.

xpost hahaha wait t@l t@hir was in a band w/the brother of a different ex of mine, but not until way way later - the H.0.T. if that rings any bells.
