S: Peter & The Test Tube Babies, Adicts, TVPs, Shapes, Notsensibles

D: Garry Bushell

the others I'm either not that fond of (Toy Dolls/Splodge) or don't know (the rest)

The Adicts are still pretty good live btw.

Seems a bit weird seeing the TVPs with this lot.

Colonel Poo, Monday, 30 November 2009 19:08 (sixteen years ago)

yeah i wasn't gonna include them but i was just cribbing from a big wiki list and they were on it, so what the hell. you are the only person who would care anyway probably.

and i love toy dolls!

scott seward, Monday, 30 November 2009 19:22 (sixteen years ago)

Of this list I will probably choose the Toy Dolls. For many reasons. They have dozens of awesome songs, plus Olga is a brilliant frontman and one of the best punk guitarists ever. Was he the first punk who could actually shred? Then they have good attention to detail - the intros and endings of their songs are always great and more than anyone on this list they throw in pretty cool chord changes, complicated things with the timing etc. Gotta give them props also for longevity, consistently putting out product and for being big in Japan. Also: social commentary and having a sense of humour that's significantly more refined than the genre demands - stuff like "Modern School of Motoring", "Olga Crack Corn", "Bless You My Son", "When You're Jimmy Saville" and tons of others totally crack me up.

Don't agree with the TVPs inclusion but that's just wiki madness. Other than maybe two songs they are irrelevant to this scene. The biggest ommission is the Dickies who were a big influence on this kind of thing, at least in the UK. Are Snuff still going?

I quite like some Splodge stuff but seeing them live would probably be depressing.

i was just listening to a splodge live album! it's hilarious.

scott seward, Monday, 30 November 2009 19:48 (sixteen years ago)

I watched some live clips of them on youtube a couple of months ago. Recent stuff. They looked and sounded awful. But I do like them. They are pretty funny and have moments of inspired genius. That song about socks cropped up on an old mixtape in my car two days ago and my daughter and I were laughing at some detail that was pretty awesome. I think it was the weird backing vocals going "bunsen burner".

everything, Monday, 30 November 2009 19:55 (sixteen years ago)

It's sad that there's not more vintage clips of the Toy Dolls on youtube. There's a few but nowhere near enough.

everything, Monday, 30 November 2009 19:57 (sixteen years ago)

yeah the splodge thing i was playing was from their heyday. i was listening to a live adicts album from 1983 too. also funny.

scott seward, Monday, 30 November 2009 20:01 (sixteen years ago)

You know I've never heard much by the Toy Dolls. I think they were ruined for me by endless Nellie The Elephant at school discos/weddings etc when I was a kid. My wife likes them, although she doesn't have any of their records or anything. Maybe I'll give them another go.

Colonel Poo, Monday, 30 November 2009 20:04 (sixteen years ago)

they DID have great songs. i just think they are supremely entertaining. i have a 2-cd comp that is probably all the toy dolls i will ever need. and i like their britishness as much as say half man half biscuit. their lyrics are always a hoot and quite smart.

scott seward, Monday, 30 November 2009 20:06 (sixteen years ago)

Yeah, they are underrated. Possibly owing to association with scenes such as Punk Pathetique. LOL. Is that the comp that comes in a little hard-cover book? I have that one too. In fact I have three different Toy Dolls comps that are all different and all good. The Ten Years of Toys one is ultra-solid and the sound is better, but the more comprehensive one is best because it's got about 50 tracks, although there's a few weak ones.

This poll might actually work better if it was specific songs, rather than bands because the "Punk Pathetique" genre name didn't really make much of an impression on anyone and a lot of the bands trancended it by simply sticking around till everyone had forgotten about it. Or else it only applied to a handful of their songs.

What, would you say is the archetypal punk pathetique song? "Michael Booth's Talking Bum" probably. "If Stuart Could Talk" by the Dickies is a contender too.

everything, Monday, 30 November 2009 20:19 (sixteen years ago)

"Two Pints Of Lager" by Splodgenessabounds is a classic.

scott seward, Monday, 30 November 2009 20:28 (sixteen years ago)

Only saw Toy Dolls once back in 1992 but it was a great, hilarious and very entertaining show. Favorite bit -- halfway through a song Olga's guitar cord comes loose or something and his guitar drops out of the mix. Completely undeterred he keeps playing (as does the band) and says to the happily bonkers crowd "Keep going!" with a big ol' smile on his face. Half a minute later the guitar comes back in, massive cheers all around and the show continues as if nothing had happened to start with. Now that's style.

Ned Raggett, Monday, 30 November 2009 20:31 (sixteen years ago)

ned, if you went to a toy dolls show in scotland people might call you a ned.

I will act with due care.

Ned Raggett, Monday, 30 November 2009 20:41 (sixteen years ago)

although i think scottish neds just listen to rap and techno. i'm no expert.

scott seward, Monday, 30 November 2009 20:42 (sixteen years ago)

Question: It has been suggested that Two Pints of Lager and A Packet of Crisps was more or less a rip from "Pass the Biscuits Please". It's hard to say whether it is more unlikely that Splodge had heard "Pass The Biscuits" and anglo-fied it or that two such similar songs came about competely seperately.

there is a great comp to be made of this stuff...

scott seward, Friday, 4 December 2009 01:03 (sixteen years ago)

I have one Toy Dolls best of, it's one CD and great. With "Livin La Vida Loca", NelElph, Florence, and blimey loads.

I did get a "cover versions" one but it's mmmm.... (Yep, Olga can shred, but no-one should do that, please. He does Toccata n Fugue, and well done have a biscuit...)

Mark G, Friday, 4 December 2009 15:55 (sixteen years ago)

i've been playing the partisans album i have like crazy. what a great album. um, cuz i notice they are on one of those comps.

toy dolls were always big with the skins. i think they are even on that first oi! comp. or one of the first ones.
