P-P-P-P-P-POLLCAINE: Queens of the Stone Age RATED R POLL

NME sez: 'Rated R' is, as Homme has promised, "a dark, cocaine, pop record"; a heady mix of speed-addled punk rock, huge, sky-filling psychedelic majesty and sex-crazed black humour. For fans of Kyuss, this is his best album since 'Welcome To Sky Valley', for everyone else, it's just the best, most important rock album for years.

Josh Homme has stated that his favorite song from the album is 'I Think I Lost My Headache', which he describes as being about "Paranoia... when you think something strange is going on, and everyone around you is so adamant about telling you its fine... but then you start thinking, 'Wouldn't that be exactly what you'd say if you didn't want me to know, and there is something going on?' And so it's kind of about that paranoid mentality which maybe I have sometimes." The song switches between a standard 4/4 time signature and the unconventional 15/8.

at first i used to hate the mad horns at the end of the album, now i think its one of the best closing songs ever.

mark e, Tuesday, 1 December 2009 23:05 (fifteen years ago)

haha YES!! the horns are brilliant!

early front-runners in order of appearance: "the lost art of keeping a secret," "auto pilot," "better living through chemistry," "in the fade"...

ain't no shame if "in the fade" sweeps this

I've got a real soft spot - between the ears - for "Monsters", which seems truly psychedelic in the sense of reminding me of what that's actually like:

"Paul's dad is warped and bubbling, oh well"

"Auto Pilot" is a dark horse for me... I mean, "In The Fade" is dope as fuck but there's something about the Neil Young feel... closest these guys have ever got to sloppy, in the best possible way.

I love "Leg of Lamb," but really... what could top "Feel Good Hit..."?

Love the track, love the bass, love the video (which I'd never seen before) but it's always come on so throwaway it's hard to take seriously vs the dark pop of "Lost Art" and "In The Fade" or the trippy groove of "Auto Pilot" or "Better Living."

Glad it's got a vote though! This poll has been predictably low-traffic but egads this is a good record.

never even liked feel good hit, though i dig most of the rest of the record. monsters is the clear stand-tout favorite for me, though lost art comes close.

im glad leg of lamb got 0. I hate that song. Monsters in the parasol on the desert sessions ep is better

wow! lot more voters than i expected. i honestly thought in the fade was a shoo-in so this is a pleasant surprise though sort of weird.

I had a feeling no one besides me would go for "Auto Pilot." totally underrated.

billstevejim, Tuesday, 8 December 2009 03:05 (fifteen years ago)

I love "Auto Pilot"! Even learned how to play it and everything!

And I dithered. But the vox and lead on "In The Fade" won out for me.
