Least favorite of the '80s NO albums. Honestly, I'll have to hear it again before I can vote because I can't even recall more than half of these songs.

Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 2 December 2009 03:32 (fifteen years ago)

"Bizarre Love Triangle" is a boring pick, but not a boring song.

Tied Up In Geir (Geir Hongro), Wednesday, 2 December 2009 03:39 (fifteen years ago)

"All Day Long" is New Order's greatest song and their best album after Low-Life.

Kevin John Bozelka, Wednesday, 2 December 2009 04:00 (fifteen years ago)

Was plotting out "All Day Long" in my head last night to get through a particularly grueling workout. Was lifted.

Kevin John Bozelka, Wednesday, 2 December 2009 04:01 (fifteen years ago)

"Weirdo" and "Way of Life" are my favorite NO guitar tunes, esp the way they break down and reconstruct punk guitar using 12" disco single ethics.

xxpost

oops THIS IS their best album after...

Kevin John Bozelka, Wednesday, 2 December 2009 04:03 (fifteen years ago)

Just voted "Broken Promise" but came close to voting "Paradise".

Sean Carruthers, Wednesday, 2 December 2009 04:04 (fifteen years ago)

"Angel Dust"

Lostandfound, Wednesday, 2 December 2009 04:42 (fifteen years ago)

But, yeah, almost "Paradise" or even "All Day Long" ("BLT" should do fine).

Lostandfound, Wednesday, 2 December 2009 04:43 (fifteen years ago)

All Day Long is exquisite. This was the first New Order album I bought after Technique - cheap vinyl copy from a clearout at the library - so I've always thought fondly of it.

Dorian (Dorianlynskey), Wednesday, 2 December 2009 08:55 (fifteen years ago)

AIWWIW - majestic, mainly cos of Hooky's bassline and also fond memories of them playing it in a stinking tent in Finsbury Park in 1987.

Dr.C, Wednesday, 2 December 2009 10:22 (fifteen years ago)

BLT

'every little counts' is possibly my favourite new order song, because it is so silly and half-arsed and effortless and good, all at once.

I really like 'brotherhood' - it's so unpolished, it sounds like it was recorded in a box, like they turned up and played some new order songs (in the way that all new order songs sound like nothing so much as new order songs) and then wandered off, and that was it, and somehow in the middle you have 'all day long' being hugely rich and 'bizarre love triangle' being so neatly well-put-together, and they don't even feel out of place for it. There is a joy in being itself, in this album, that I think is hard to find.

alas the shiny shiny richard x rmx of BLT has totally spoiled me on the album version.

lords of hyrule (c sharp major), Wednesday, 2 December 2009 10:48 (fifteen years ago)

^^ OTM. Brotherhood is curious -- I'd never claim it's the best New Order album, but it has a very warm presence in my mind. Coloured by my own experience, of course, but I really think there's some truth in the whole album exuding a confidence and comfort with its ramshackle, halfassed self.

Repping "Way Of Life" for this one.

President Danny Glover (Millsner), Wednesday, 2 December 2009 11:58 (fifteen years ago)

I honestly can't remember any of these except for BLT

Huckabee Jesus lifeline (HI DERE), Wednesday, 2 December 2009 14:32 (fifteen years ago)

Weird period for the band, their weakest canon 12"s ("Shellshock", "State") and a thunderingly poor LP here. Barney's singing is so out of tune it's untrue. Robie was a bad fit, the New York romance had run out of steam. Version of "Paradise" w/Gillespie for the '98 Peel session was a major redemption.

cee-oh-tee-tee, Wednesday, 2 December 2009 15:24 (fifteen years ago)

this is a "daddy or chips" scenario. definitely prefer the second side to the first, but the last four songs are just untouchable for elegaic marvelousness.

possibly "every little counts" for barney's lyrical giggle, and also that bit at the end where the synths go all phased out and floaty

Great thread:

In Praise of...Brotherhood by New Order

So I'm the only one who voted for All Day Long in the end? Bah.

Dorian (Dorianlynskey), Thursday, 10 December 2009 09:01 (fifteen years ago)

I'm a bit surprised to see ELC take the prize.

President Danny Glover (Millsner), Thursday, 10 December 2009 10:56 (fifteen years ago)

a lot of love for that song

Karen Tregaskin, Thursday, 10 December 2009 10:58 (fifteen years ago)

This poll had to have been rigged. No way ELC won fairly. I never even saw this poll, would have voted All Day Long but it's a great album.

brotherlovesdub, Thursday, 10 December 2009 15:28 (fifteen years ago)

missed this poll, but Brotherhood was my #5 pick on tha recent 1980's poll and i was sorta surprised it didn't make the cut. after relistening to PC&L and Technique recently i still think Brotherhood is a much stronger record/batch of tunes.
and to my ears the remaster sounds sublime
