I went "from this decade?" at Lou Bega & Ruff Endz

only mod can judge me (The Reverend), Monday, 7 December 2009 19:37 (fifteen years ago)

feels so weird to think of some of these as one-hit wonders! blu cantrell's "breathe" was much bigger than "hit 'em up style" over here.

2. Terror Squad - Lean Back
8. Blu Cantrell - Hit 'Em Up Style (Oops!)
10. Dream - He Loves U Not
11. J-Kwon - Tipsy
15. Lumidee - Never Leave You - Uh Ooh, Uh Oooh!
17. Kevin Lyttle feat. Spragga Benz - Turn Me On
20. Samantha Mumba - Gotta Tell You
22. Macy Gray - I Try
24. Vanessa Carlton - A Thousand Miles
27. Rich Boy feat. Polow Da Don - Throw Some D's
29. Tweet - Oops (Oh My)

26. Eiffel 65 - Blue (Da Ba Dee)

this was technically 1999 but who gives a fuck, I was gonna vote "This Is Why I'm Hot" but fuck not voting for eiffel 65 imo

what fun it is to reign & sing a Slayer song tonight (Curt1s Stephens), Monday, 7 December 2009 19:42 (fifteen years ago)

voted for hit 'em up style before seeing lumidee :(

hey trader joe's! i've got the new steely dan. (Jordan), Monday, 7 December 2009 19:45 (fifteen years ago)

yeah who am i kidding it's lumidee

lex pretend, Monday, 7 December 2009 19:50 (fifteen years ago)

If we're operating on a "most continuing lolz derived from song long after said band has disappeared," Crazy Town's "Butterfly" walks this one for me.

Johnny Fever, Monday, 7 December 2009 19:52 (fifteen years ago)

29. Tweet - Oops (Oh My)

Poor girl had the misfortune of arriving about five years too early. Now her whole career could be a product of synergy with twitter.

Johnny Fever, Monday, 7 December 2009 19:54 (fifteen years ago)

Lumidee but Nina Sky wuz robbed.

Shh! It's NOT Me!, Monday, 7 December 2009 20:03 (fifteen years ago)

Nina sky did not qualify i'm guessing because the sublime Oye Mi Canto managed to reach no. 12

danzig, Monday, 7 December 2009 20:07 (fifteen years ago)

what planet is gnarls barkley a one hit wonder, i heard those other songs all over the fuckin place

asuckeudic (Whiney G. Weingarten), Monday, 7 December 2009 20:10 (fifteen years ago)

2 of the worst singles of the decade right here

mdskltr (blueski), Monday, 7 December 2009 20:11 (fifteen years ago)

Highest they've placed another single is #88 xp

only mod can judge me (The Reverend), Monday, 7 December 2009 20:13 (fifteen years ago)

it is totally lumidee, but "lean back" came up on an ipod mix a little while ago and sounded GREAT. lots of other good songs here too obv.

hellzapoppa (tipsy mothra), Monday, 7 December 2009 20:15 (fifteen years ago)

how the fuck do they compile that chart? I heard that stupid "Run" song and that "Smiling Faces" song a zilliuon times and then don't hear Jay Sean until he's number one.

Obv, they should change it to the "has whiney heard this" scale

asuckeudic (Whiney G. Weingarten), Monday, 7 December 2009 20:15 (fifteen years ago)

Gnarls truly is the best song if the group does indeed qualify as a one hit wonder, didn't the Violent Femmes cover chart also?

Blunt & Powter are the worst imo

anyone want to defend those?

lukevalentine, Monday, 7 December 2009 20:16 (fifteen years ago)

wait, i'm having second thoughts maybe should have voted Throw Some D's

lukevalentine, Monday, 7 December 2009 20:16 (fifteen years ago)

the single of the decade is either "crazy" or "hey ya," so "crazy"

(whiney every one-hit wonder gets another check-for-echo hit. hell right said fred had two "hits.")

all yoga attacks are fire based (rogermexico.), Monday, 7 December 2009 20:18 (fifteen years ago)

voted lumidee, but me & u and blu cantrell also good

Dominique, Monday, 7 December 2009 20:19 (fifteen years ago)

the thing about this era is that there are usually infinite remixes on mix tapes or youtube or whatever and I probably remember some of those more than the singles themselves

like, Twista's version of "That's Why I'm Hot" which kicked Mims' ass, seriously

also Kanye's Throw Some D's remix

I thought "Laffy Taffy" was pretty horrible / extremely catchy

lukevalentine, Monday, 7 December 2009 20:23 (fifteen years ago)

Blueski: "butterfly" and.... "what's left of me"?

Mr. Snrub, Monday, 7 December 2009 20:24 (fifteen years ago)

define "all over the fuckin place," because out here in REAL AMURRICA i heard like 4 of their other singles maybe twice each, usually on MTV2, and none of them got anywhere near the top 40, let alone to #2 like "Crazy" did

radric in manehattan (some dude), Monday, 7 December 2009 20:47 (fifteen years ago)

Blueski: "butterfly" and.... "what's left of me"?

Blunt and The Calling - don't really mind Crazy Town, stupid as it is - never heard of Lachey

Throw Some D's

ablaeser, Monday, 7 December 2009 23:10 (fifteen years ago)

I like a lot of these: Blunt, Powter, Lachey, Crazy Town, Blu Cantrell, Lou Bega, Eiffel 65 and Tweet. But voting for Gnarls Barkley, slightly over Macy Gray. Just double checked my Joel Whitburn: "Crazy" was indeed their one and only Top 40 song. And "I Try" was her only Top 40.

youngbloodz were 1 hitters? did 85 have any chart action?

unicorn strapped with a unabomb (deej), Tuesday, 8 December 2009 04:58 (fifteen years ago)

didn't the Violent Femmes cover chart also?

Wow, just listened to this and it's one of the most unnecessary covers I've ever heard.

To be fair, the VF version of "Crazy" is only a little more necessary.

Guayaquil (eephus!), Tuesday, 8 December 2009 05:04 (fifteen years ago)

"85" had a mild amount of chart action. imo one hit wonders are basically nonexistent these days because anyone who has one big song invariably is hot enough for at least a few months to end up with a bunch of guest appearances and a couple semi-big follow ups.

also so weird to have Terror Squad at #2 on this list when it's basically a Fat Joe song and he has so many hits.

radric in manehattan (some dude), Tuesday, 8 December 2009 05:17 (fifteen years ago)

"85" only reached #53 R&B and didn't even graze the pop charts. Their second highest charter is "Presidential" (#81 Pop/#26 R&B).

only mod can judge me (The Reverend), Tuesday, 8 December 2009 07:50 (fifteen years ago)

Macy but somebody should really vote for J-Kwon please.

also so weird to have Terror Squad at #2 on this list when it's basically a Fat Joe song and he has so many hits.

it's true that if that qualifies then probably g-unit should too. wasn't "stunt 101" the only actual hit under the g-unit name?

hellzapoppa (tipsy mothra), Tuesday, 8 December 2009 08:02 (fifteen years ago)

'i wanna get to know you' felt like a hit, no idea if it was or was one of those R&B charting joints

unicorn strapped with a unabomb (deej), Tuesday, 8 December 2009 08:24 (fifteen years ago)

Macy Gray was in LOL Spiderman.

Vanessa Carlton gets my vote for the inspired piano riff. And it's a nice tune.

Monophonic Spree (Paul in Santa Cruz), Tuesday, 8 December 2009 08:31 (fifteen years ago)

Oops (Oh My) is a stone-cold classic

Also amazing - Lumidee, Cassie, Gnarls, Macy, Cantrell

Least missed - Crazy Town. Just seeing the name brings back the horror.

Gnarls Barkley is going to walk this poll on ILM.

I just wish he hadn't adopted the "ilxor" moniker (ilxor), Tuesday, 8 December 2009 22:33 (fifteen years ago)

Always meant to ask: is "walk this" a British thing? I assume it means the same thing as "walk away with," yeah?

Nuyorican oatmeal (jaymc), Tuesday, 8 December 2009 22:41 (fifteen years ago)

yes

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Tuesday, 8 December 2009 22:41 (fifteen years ago)

Plenty of stuff on here that I'd really like to hear right now, but the only ones I actually know the whole song of and can say with certainty that they are good throughout are "Throw Some D's" and Eiffel 65, and Eiffel 65 has more nostalgia value. "Who Let The Dogs Out" would have crushed all contenders in this poll - I have this sense that it might be the equivalent of Nate Dogg in ILX polling power.

PS, how is Youngbloodz "U-Way" not a bigger hit than "Damn!" which I've never heard of?

Doctor Casino, Friday, 11 December 2009 11:38 (fifteen years ago)

Why are all these songs called variations on "Ooh-Uh (Ooh-Uh-Ba-BeeBoo)"?

dog latin, Friday, 11 December 2009 12:24 (fifteen years ago)

they're not

I'm thinking there were less frequent one-hit-wonders during the 00's than any decade since the 50's or since one-hit-wonders started existing.

the embodiment of "My dick is where? This is too rich." (Whitey on the Moon), Friday, 11 December 2009 19:54 (fifteen years ago)

I tend to confuse the Plain White Tees with the White Plains, another, better, one hit wonder.

And do iPod commercial songs count as one hit wonders? If so then there are a lot of indie rock faves that can slip in this list, right?

Cunga, Friday, 11 December 2009 20:07 (fifteen years ago)

According to the Plain White T's wikipedia "(the music video) has found success on the weekly VH1 Top 20 Video Countdown, having charted for over three months straight since late January, peaking at #5."

I no idea anybody kept track of the Vh1 Top 20 Video Countdown outside of the host of the show.

This blows my mind more than any other deadly hit-status reveal on this thread. Holy COW that song was inescapable. I guess it helped that I was at UGA at the time (mascot: bulldog) so it got extra exposure. But still! That was a GIANT hit in my mind.

Definitely, the "featuring" phenomenon really dialed down one-hit wonder status in the 00s...I mean, applying pedantic "one-hit" criteria fails even more here than usual because, okay, Macy Gray only had one "hit" but we remember her being AROUND for a good bit longer thanks to things like that Black Eyed Peas single where she rasps for a while about the radio-man telling her secrets or whatever.

Really, she might be the prototypical 2000s celebrity who insinuated herself so rapidly into the production of everything that her one-hit status as a pop star was irrelevant. Check these Wikipedia facts:

Gray sang the theme song for Nickelodeon's As Told By Ginger.
In 2002 she was the voice for Seeiah Owens in the video game SSX Tricky.
She appeared at the 2008 Gulf Air's Bahrain Grand Prix. She stated she liked the Ferrari team and also found Jenson Button 'cute'.[64]
A cartoon based on Gray's childhood was being developed at one point, but it never came to fruition.[37][38]

And, wtf:

Macy recently launched a new campaign under the name Nemesis Jaxson, with upcoming single, "Slap a Bitch".[57] Slap a Bitch has not been released as of June 2009, but a video featuring many people slapping each other's faces was released on the Internet around December 12, 2008.

went for rich boy because why not, not why

LA CANCION MAS PRETENCIOSA DEL MUNDO... (The Reverend), Sunday, 13 December 2009 00:45 (fifteen years ago)

"Who Let the Dogs Out?" was inescapable because it was marketed *directly* to sports teams/ stadiums. So it wasn't a case of teams deciding to use a big hit to pump up fans -- they just used the song so much everyone thought it was a big hit. I wonder if something similar happened with "Let's Get It Started."

uninspired girls rejoice!!! (Hoot Smalley), Sunday, 13 December 2009 01:17 (fifteen years ago)

That's a really bad comparison considering the BEPs were coming off two top 40 hits from the same album.

LA CANCION MAS PRETENCIOSA DEL MUNDO... (The Reverend), Sunday, 13 December 2009 01:34 (fifteen years ago)

Speaking of which, is it just me or does "Hey Mama" seem relatively less well remembered these days than other BEP hits?

LA CANCION MAS PRETENCIOSA DEL MUNDO... (The Reverend), Sunday, 13 December 2009 01:35 (fifteen years ago)

"Let's Get It Started" was used in sports promos & events well before it was a single, though -- IIRC they did the new version changing the words from "Let's Get Retarded" expressly for some team or network coverage or something

some dude, Sunday, 13 December 2009 01:45 (fifteen years ago)

maybe so, but they weren't exactly coming out of nowhere like the Baja Men were

LA CANCION MAS PRETENCIOSA DEL MUNDO... (The Reverend), Sunday, 13 December 2009 01:59 (fifteen years ago)

Uh, it's not a "comparison." The producer of "Who Let the Dogs Out" used a specific marketing technique. The BEPs could possibly have done the same, maybe not.

uninspired girls rejoice!!! (Hoot Smalley), Sunday, 13 December 2009 02:32 (fifteen years ago)
