Can anyone lead me in the right direction ? I have come across the Brazilian comp by Soul Jazz which is great and the band Size from Mexico... Any Ilmer's know any bands that would fit this bill ?

there's a little overlap w/ Sexual Life of the Savages but the Nao Wave comp. that came out around the same time is good too

i will check that dmr. do you know of anything similar happening in other countries ? peru, chile, argentina, mexico etc ? seems sorely under-covered, and google was of little help. perhaps it doesn't exist or is restricted to vinyl ?

there's a lot from Spain (e.g. Neo Zelanda, Esplendor Geometrico) but that isn't really the question at hand.

does Nervous Gender count? Or do the bands have to reside in Latin America?

Because this will be lost on an obscure thread revival. . .
Puerto Rico's MDs:

Puerto Rican blog dealing with hip-hop, "dance" music, reggaeton, salsa, etc.
Okay maybe more punk than post-punk a lot of the time, but give them a chance. (Oh the lyrics just said give me a chance when I wrote that.)

Kind of a pub rock vibe in some of this, though I admit I'm a little hazy on just what pub rock is.
― _Rudipherous_, Friday, 11 January 2013 17:55 (twelve years ago)
But for example "Senior Power." Wish they wouldn't just give a brief clip for some songs. Do they think that after three decades everyone is going to just buy their reissue box set? (Not saying there is one.)

Mommy told meof days like thisbut I must insistthat I've got brain damage
I think that's my favorite so far.

The pretty female vocal chorus is a nice touch here. I notice most of their songs (of the few I've heard so far) have brief, but striking moments when they go all instrumental. Once again, a band saved by being musical.

That's actually Senior Power, incidentally.

Cool. Glad you're liking it. They had a sudden wave of interest in reforming in the last couple years. I believe they had a bunch of demos from the '80s that they finally plan on finishing.
Felt weird seeing my cousins' band getting a bunch of praise on a random blog... made me interested in finally hearing their stuff: http://www.garagehangover.com/?q=taxonomy/term/1074/0

Shame my parents sold all their vinyl. I'd love to own it.

Honestly I don't listen to a lot of music along these lines any more (and Puerto Rico matters to me musically mostly because of salsa), but this has a lot going for it and I'm enjoying it now. I don't see why others who are more into this sound wouldn't latch onto it in a big way if they heard it, but it's hard to predict.
― _Rudipherous_, Friday, 11 January 2013 19:08 (twelve years ago)
And I thought more of the people who would be likely to be interested would find it on this thread rather than that other thread of mine you revived.

BRAIN DAMAGE (Tracks 1-11) is an obscure recording by a group of high school students and their English teacher, released in 1980, on vinyl in limited press. A refreshing mix of punk, rad hardcore and new wave influences with plenty of varied rhythms throughout, this independent production was remastered 30 years later from a long lost reel and will be re-released in vinyl in very limited edition. It features 11 original songs, no fillers, full of raw, no b.s., beats and catchy sing-along lyrics, still considered a gem of indie rock this side of the equator, in one of the busiest musical scenes in the world.
