The Gap Band's first album Magicians Holiday is sadly out of print, so the only source online is vinyl rips of varying degrees of quality. "Fontessa Fame" is probably the album's key track, but the whole thing is really good.

From the Wings album, Back to the Egg, an overlooked minor Macca classic. A strange, sparse, keyboard driven bit of post-disco pop. "Old Siam, Sir" is the other major jam on this - admittedly - curate's egg of an LP.

(A curate's 'back to the' egg?)

Chrome - 'Slip It To The Android' from Alien Soundtracks (1978): Their stuff is this great weird sci-fi space-punk Stooges meets Hawkwind meets Blue Oyster Cult sorta thing, but this one sounds a lot more like Babaluma-era Can than anything else.

Flora Purim's "Stories to Tell" is one of the finest blends of 70s jazz and Brazilian pop.

Cabaret Voltaire - 'No Escape' from Mix-Up (1979): The Cabs looking dead shifty here, stood by a lake in the freezing cold in the middle of nowhere, like they've gone off badger-baiting armed only with a fucked-up synth and some dodgy eye-liner.

Poor Garland Jeffreys has been forgotten by time, but "Matador" (and the whole of American Boy & Girl) is really nice.

lolz I didn't think anyone else had even HEARD that American Spring album... posted track is easily the weirdest thing on there, but I dig the whole vibe of the album, its very sweet.

unobtaintium (Shakey Mo Collier), Tuesday, 8 December 2009 21:46 (fifteen years ago)

Also, "Wild in the Streets" had the misfortune of being a stand-alone single in 1973 until it was included on the Ghost Writer album (where it kind of didn't fit). This song's been covered several time, including by Circle Jerks (!).

Yeah, that takes some deep digging. Unfortunately so, as it really is a lovely little album. And weirdly so, since Brian Wilson was so involved in its creation. You'd think it would've been a big-time special edition reissue by this point. Unless it already has been and I don't know it...?

he's probably afraid that if he reissues it, Mike Love will come after him demanding money

Hey, especially check that first Angel Canales track; it has a pretty sophisticated sound. He's not too well-known outside of salsa circles and with this album I think he arrived at his own very distinctive voice as a band-leader. (His vocal style is more fully developed here, too, than it is on Sabor Con Angel Canales.)

Baden Powell is my favourite guitarist of all time, and one of the biggest geniuses in Brazilian music. Here you can see him jamming to the tape of Canto on Guitar in the studio where it was recorded.

Tuomas, Wednesday, 9 December 2009 20:58 (fifteen years ago)

I like Baden Powell, though probably not nearly as consistently as you do. Haven't heard that particular album, but I will try to look for it.

From Kongos by John Kongos (later made more famous by Happy Mondays). Whole album's pretty great in a post-Beatles slightly-eastern boogie rock sense.
