He's really famous/popular? I saw him in guest spots on two Nickelodeon shows -- iCarly and True Jackson VP (my 8-year old daughter watches both shows) -- and figured he was just an actor playing a country singer.

He was terrible, BTW. His voice seemed auto-tuned, and his songs seemed flat and hackneyed.

I assume that sometimes labels just keep pressing until a act is popular. I'm open to be convinced otherwise with respect to this kid's talent, but wow, those few Justin Bieber songs I heard were, at best . . . servicable? Adequate? Unmemorable? Nondescript? Maybe worse.

Death and Legacy

Bieber died following a gunshot wound sustained during a late night altercation in west Manhattan. According to local detectives, Bieber and his alleged girlfriend Selena Gomez attempted to enter a New York City nightclub with fake IDs but were recognized by several patrons. Witnesses claim Bieber was belligerent and threatened to shoot one of the bouncers. Justin subsequently reached into his coat pocket and withdrew what the NYPD has claimed to be a small .25 caliber pistol. James Rodriguez, an on duty police officer at the scene, responded by shooting Bieber once in the head. It was later determined that Beiber's handgun was errantly loaded with .22 caliber ammunition.

Paramedics arrived on scene shortly after the shooting but were unable to resuscitate Bieber, who was pronounced dead shortly before 11pm EST. The area surrounding Larry Flynt's Hustler Club on Manhattan's West 51st street has been closed off and witnesses are being questioned as the investigation into this tragic event continues. No statement has been released by Bieber's family or publicist, and no one else was injured during the altercation. Although toxicology reports have not yet been issued, several tablets of the prescription drug Dilauded were found on Gomez' person and it is speculated that both her and Bieber were intoxicated.

Yeah, 'one time' really only grosses me out because:
a) his 'invisible' braces are incredibly, ickily visible
b) he's 'seducing' girls
c) he looks like he's 12 rather than 15
d) he embodies everything that i find so compelling but also so disgusting about teenagers of today.

I don't follow him that closely but love what I just heard. It has a lo-fi feeling to a lot of tracks here. Pleasantly surprised.

It really is, not sure what I expected from him in 2025 but he couldn't have done better.

Swag got 1 out of 5 stars in the Belgian Standaard newspaper, mostly because he had said it was going to be his most personal album yet but the reviewer - who had expected real deep revelations about the rocky patch Bieber went through - only heard soulless platitudes, despite all the fancy collaborators.

i think this album is fun as a conversation piece, as a body of music i think it’s only okay. the production is obviously pretty great throughout, but you would hope that would be the case given the people involved. lyrically i just find a lot of this album a bit laughable, which sure it’s justin bieber but there’s a tension between the tastefulness of the production and the cheesiness of a lot of the writing that doesn’t resolve for me. something that’s great about both mk.gee and dijon is that a lot of the times the lyrics are impressionistic, or direct meaning comes only in shards. it works in tandem w/ the instrumentation in a way that this really broad style of pop writing can’t capture. my fav song is “405” bcuz he’s just repeating a few words for like the entire song

not sure this would make my top 3 bieber albums. they’re all imperfect but i don’t think this is better than believe, journals, or purpose … it might hold together better as an album qua album bcuz of the nature of the production but the best songs on those albums clear this one pretty comfortably for my money

there’s also something about the nature of his relationship… i have a hard time getting into an otherwise pretty good love song that opens by mentioning the creation of an iphone case with a lip gloss holder. just takes me out of it a bit

this feels more like his 20/20 experience than his futuresex/lovesounds. that one was another sumptuously produced album with lazy lyrics and non-specific love songs inspired by a famous wife (biel is roughly 100x more interesting and talented than the former ms. baldwin tho)

Was in one of my neighborhood coffee shops yesterday, and instead of their usual playlist mixes they were just playing this album continuously. Khruangbin better watch out!

I think the key to this album is that if you just have it on in the background it all kinda blends into the above feel somehow, in a way that a lot of it does not if you turn to stare at it directly - just this lowkey chill beats vibesiness with Justin never really rising above the level of a backing vocal choir of snotty man-children muttering and mewing in the middle distance
