Genre you know nothing about and would like to learn/be part of/indulge in: A (revised) Poll.

After the success of ILX spreading their wisdom my way about Jazz and Funk, I'm thinking of starting some [GENRE] FOR ILX's IGNORANT threads so we can all appreciate in music we may be interested in but don't really know where to start and possibly have others help. So what do you want to see most urgently?

All sub genres surely to be held within the larger groupings. Sorry for my ignorance on some of the genre names. Feel free to have write-ins.

four months pass...

Mordy's Metal Listening Club Volume #2: April 19 thru 25, 2010 - Fates Warning, Cradle of Filth and HIM... All ILXors and Lurkers welcome! is looking quite popular with both ppl new to metal and obsessive metal heads. Maybe we should look into doing something similar for other genres? Anyone got any ideas or want to do anything?

I'd be up for doing a funk listening club, but I dont know if anyone would be interested other than shakey

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Wednesday, 21 April 2010 20:44 (fifteen years ago)

i'd do a hiphop one but it would just end up with deej/whiney handbags after like 5 minutes.

tart w/ a heart (a hoy hoy), Wednesday, 21 April 2010 20:45 (fifteen years ago)

if anyone wants a funk listening club Speak now, or forever hold your peace.

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Wednesday, 21 April 2010 20:47 (fifteen years ago)

but that would be entertaining as well as useful!
xp

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Wednesday, 21 April 2010 20:47 (fifteen years ago)

This is a great idea...would welcome any sequel to the metal thread.

Funk ranks pretty low on genres I'd love to explore in this way, actually.

Davek (davek_00), Wednesday, 21 April 2010 20:49 (fifteen years ago)

i would be down for the funk one, although doing that and the metal one puts me at 6 required reading albums a week which seems like it might not always work out for me

HOT DISH THYME MACHINE (jjjusten), Wednesday, 21 April 2010 20:52 (fifteen years ago)

I'd be up for the funk listening club. I recently loaded down this set of podcasts which are just phenomenal - I can't believe there's always been this amazing, accessible genre out there, and I know virtually nothing about it.

Ismael Klata, Wednesday, 21 April 2010 20:52 (fifteen years ago)

I mean, I've made up about a dozen cds for my car, all brilliant - and so far I've recognised maybe one tune ('I Got A Thing, You Got A Thing...') and that's it.

Ismael Klata, Wednesday, 21 April 2010 20:55 (fifteen years ago)

If a few more people are in for a funk club I'll happily start it.

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Wednesday, 21 April 2010 20:56 (fifteen years ago)

Metal club starts on a monday so the funk club starting on a weds is perfect for me (not that im running the metal one but y'know)

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Wednesday, 21 April 2010 20:57 (fifteen years ago)

vote yes but really want to see a classical one.

tart w/ a heart (a hoy hoy), Wednesday, 21 April 2010 20:58 (fifteen years ago)

What does 'listening club' actually entail? I don't want to have to submit essays or anything.

Ismael Klata, Wednesday, 21 April 2010 20:59 (fifteen years ago)

Kerr got me to review records depending on corresponding arsenal player they remind me of, its not rocket science.

tart w/ a heart (a hoy hoy), Wednesday, 21 April 2010 21:03 (fifteen years ago)

haha

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Wednesday, 21 April 2010 21:05 (fifteen years ago)

If a few more people are in for a funk club I'll happily start it.

yeah I'd be happy to help "curate" or whatever, me and Herman's knowledge/collections overlap pretty heavily

the first circus ringleader in space (Shakey Mo Collier), Wednesday, 21 April 2010 21:07 (fifteen years ago)

there was kinda already a thread where this was happening, but I think it was like "one poster reviews a bunch of funk albums" (and I forget who it was... tipsy?)

the first circus ringleader in space (Shakey Mo Collier), Wednesday, 21 April 2010 21:08 (fifteen years ago)

mordys metal listening club runs like this
Someone suggests 3 albums on a set day.
Everyone listens to the albums how they please (from their cds, spotify, lala, grooveshark, slsk(shhhh) etc)

They then post on the thread about what they think of the album, or they can liveblog it or whatever. Do whatever you feel like doing. If you wanna write an essay feel free, whatever suits you.

Then the next week someone else can choose 3 albums. If noone wants to or we run out of volunteers I can easily step in and choose the albums, but every single person on ilx can have a turn if they want.

Who is in?

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Wednesday, 21 April 2010 21:11 (fifteen years ago)

shakey it was martin (from the dvdrs i sent him) but he hated the stuff we like as it was too rock haha.

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Wednesday, 21 April 2010 21:11 (fifteen years ago)

one of the things about funk that we might want to consider, though, is that it is not as much an album-centric genre as metal is. I mean yeah there are a lot of great albums, but so much classic funk stuff was more single-oriented (for ex., William DeVaughn's "Be Thankful for What You Got" or James Brown and co. singles, etc.)

the first circus ringleader in space (Shakey Mo Collier), Wednesday, 21 April 2010 21:12 (fifteen years ago)

right yeah martin wanted everything to be futuristic disco

the first circus ringleader in space (Shakey Mo Collier), Wednesday, 21 April 2010 21:12 (fifteen years ago)

well, im not gonna choose comps, but others can (but please limit it to one per week until we run oput of albums)

And please remember that Star Time isnt an easy thing to track down!

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Wednesday, 21 April 2010 21:14 (fifteen years ago)

So much to learn about Funk and Jazz that i'd contribute or at least lurk and download the gems.

brotherlovesdub, Wednesday, 21 April 2010 21:18 (fifteen years ago)

I'm in. As per thread title, I'll be looking for a 'getting to know you' approach to the genre. Save the Metal Machine Music equivalents for later, maybe.

Ismael Klata, Wednesday, 21 April 2010 21:19 (fifteen years ago)

don't get me wrong I know what James Brown albums I would put forward (that would be The Payback) but there's just a potential for a lot of stuff to fall through the cracks. or to become overwhelming - some of those comps, like Star Time or What It Is!, can't be fully digested in a few days time, really.

xp

the first circus ringleader in space (Shakey Mo Collier), Wednesday, 21 April 2010 21:20 (fifteen years ago)

OK im starting one now then. gonna go for 2 essentials and 1 not very well known albums i think.

Its bloody hard choosing just 3 though so i do not mind if i do have to pick albums every week!

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Wednesday, 21 April 2010 21:27 (fifteen years ago)

Brian you should totally start a reggae/dub listening club

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Wednesday, 21 April 2010 21:27 (fifteen years ago)

I'm glad this thread is finally starting to come to something btw. Cheers to Ismael for reminding me it existed.

tart w/ a heart (a hoy hoy), Wednesday, 21 April 2010 21:30 (fifteen years ago)

Brian you should totally start a reggae/dub listening club

oh man this genre is SO DENSE I would totally dig this too btw

the first circus ringleader in space (Shakey Mo Collier), Wednesday, 21 April 2010 21:31 (fifteen years ago)

looking forward to the Funk club (though it will have a better name than that surely). would also be into the poll winner happening, though in my attempts to figure out classical irl, I've quickly realized that getting into classical is an order of magnitude more difficult than other genres when most pieces have several different recordings/performers/labels to pick from.

elephant rob, Wednesday, 21 April 2010 21:33 (fifteen years ago)

ah christ not that i need more to do here but reggae/dub is totally impenetrable (blame my bob marley loving college roommate for that shit) to me so i would dig that as well

HOT DISH THYME MACHINE (jjjusten), Wednesday, 21 April 2010 21:42 (fifteen years ago)

brotherlovesdub is the obvious choice to do the reggae club and turangalila is the perfect dude for the classical club. So try and persuade them!

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Wednesday, 21 April 2010 21:47 (fifteen years ago)

ok, i'm up for the challenge but there are a good number of cats on ILM who also have crazy deep Reggae/Dub knowledge. Hopefully they'll share some of their favs too.

brotherlovesdub, Wednesday, 21 April 2010 22:27 (fifteen years ago)

thats how it works. everyone takes a turn but if noone wants to or they run out of albums you can always fill in!

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Wednesday, 21 April 2010 22:31 (fifteen years ago)

I'm quite new here, so I wouldn't want to be presumptuous, but I would be happy to share knowledge on a reggae thread.

elephant rob, Wednesday, 21 April 2010 22:54 (fifteen years ago)

plz do sir. also as the metal club has shown us, you will be allowed to throw in a lol ub40 once in a while.

tart w/ a heart (a hoy hoy), Wednesday, 21 April 2010 22:56 (fifteen years ago)

lol

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Wednesday, 21 April 2010 23:07 (fifteen years ago)

Really excited about the funk listening club and Aldo hope the reggae/dub one starts too.

Am going to make an effort to follow the Metal one, which will please one particular member of my real life brethren.

One suggestion though, purely because I'm sure we all have a load of other things queued up on our "must listen to" lists:

Depending on genre, selecting 3 albums per week for the listening club might be best (although dub 7"s culture may lend itself to individual tracks) but could the curator also detail the 3 best tracks on their selected albums?

Also if anyone wants a house/techno one I'm ready to do this.

De que estas hablando? (Tannenbaum Schmidt), Thursday, 22 April 2010 00:27 (fifteen years ago)

Or jazz.

I'm in. As per thread title, I'll be looking for a 'getting to know you' approach to the genre. Save the Metal Machine Music equivalents for later, maybe.

yep That is what I went for, unlike the metal club i think i'll get a turn every few weeks so i know i can go a bit more obscure later (mind you, even the most obscure is accessible, early funkadelic is more the what the fuck were these dudes on when making this, and thats the canon albums!!)

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Thursday, 22 April 2010 00:33 (fifteen years ago)

yeah Im up for having a week for jazz albums too

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Thursday, 22 April 2010 00:34 (fifteen years ago)

everything else mentioned though I dont have a scooby about to pick albums but im excited about learning

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Thursday, 22 April 2010 00:34 (fifteen years ago)

The only tricky thing about doing the classical one is individual performances may differ so much and, well, we might as well be listening to the same thing. What do you guys propose?

Turangalila, Thursday, 22 April 2010 13:31 (fifteen years ago)

try finding the same performance?

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Thursday, 22 April 2010 13:36 (fifteen years ago)

well yes but maybe also up10ad1ng 1t in a 53cr3t place? haha

Turangalila, Thursday, 22 April 2010 13:41 (fifteen years ago)

well, you could start a google group and everyone joins up and it gets passed around there?

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Thursday, 22 April 2010 13:45 (fifteen years ago)

If we are having multiple genre listening clubs, mebbe 3 records a week is too much? Or is everyone fine w/ 3? I know I have way much more free time than people with proper jobs so it doesn't effect me personally but...

tart w/ a heart (a hoy hoy), Thursday, 22 April 2010 15:28 (fifteen years ago)

sam, most people will only participate in 1 or 2

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Thursday, 22 April 2010 15:31 (fifteen years ago)

so dont fret

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Thursday, 22 April 2010 15:31 (fifteen years ago)

plus some weeks genres they do like, they might not fancy the albums.

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Thursday, 22 April 2010 15:32 (fifteen years ago)

its something for everyone.

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Thursday, 22 April 2010 15:33 (fifteen years ago)

i'd like to do the three that have already started but no way do i have time for 9 albums/week sadly

call all destroyer, Thursday, 22 April 2010 15:34 (fifteen years ago)

So far we have
Mordy's Metal Listening Club Volume #2: April 19 thru 25, 2010 - Fates Warning, Cradle of Filth and HIM... All ILXors and Lurkers welcome!
ILX0RS - FREE YOUR MIND AND YOUR ASS WILL FOLLOW.... TO THE ILM FUNK LISTENING CLUB! (This Weeks Albums are Funkadelic , Ohio Players and Mandrill.)
ILX0RS - JAZZ IS THE TEACHER . YEAH IT'S A JAZZ THING >> THE ILM JAZZ LISTENING CLUB!
EXPRESSO 2222: the semi-official BRAZILIAN MUSIC LISTENING CLUB.

turangalila is working on the Classical club right now and I think he's sticking to one per week?

brotherlovesdub is going to do the reggae/dub/ska club on friday he said if he gets the time.

I wonder how long until a thread is started by some moaning bastard that there's too many listening clubs.

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Thursday, 22 April 2010 16:44 (fifteen years ago)

any second now, I imagine

the first circus ringleader in space (Shakey Mo Collier), Thursday, 22 April 2010 16:49 (fifteen years ago)

we should run a sweepstake on who it will be

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Thursday, 22 April 2010 16:50 (fifteen years ago)

― call all destroyer, Thursday, 22 April 2010 15:34 (1 hour ago) Bookmark

Yeah, I'm thinking the same - but the Brazilian music one is just one album choice per week, and I'm expecting to only dip into the Metal one. Might suggest the Jazz one is down to 2 albums a week.

lol that no one voted for Jazz in the poll, but there's one now!

De que estas hablando? (Tannenbaum Schmidt), Thursday, 22 April 2010 16:51 (fifteen years ago)

I think its because there's lots of jazz threads and jazz fans on ILM so you couldn't really vote to learn about it when you were already immersed in it.

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Thursday, 22 April 2010 16:54 (fifteen years ago)

yeah i really want to do the brazilian one--hopefully stuff isn't too hard to find

call all destroyer, Thursday, 22 April 2010 16:56 (fifteen years ago)

you guys need to find the spotify workaround

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Thursday, 22 April 2010 17:00 (fifteen years ago)

Kerr, how do you link an album on spotify? I'm going to do a semi-official (1 obscure album) rap one tomorrow, as its not exactly a genre people are lacking in but I think we can get some good discussion on things ppl never hear. (first album... how about 'The Bricks' by Outsidaz?)

tart w/ a heart (a hoy hoy), Thursday, 22 April 2010 18:21 (fifteen years ago)

right click over album title and select copy http link

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Thursday, 22 April 2010 18:25 (fifteen years ago)

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Thursday, 22 April 2010 18:25 (fifteen years ago)

For the rap club, how about 1 classic for ppl who know fuck all about rap but need a way in and 1 lesser known for the hardcore to enjoy writing about. First week is always a good idea to keep accessible. You dont need to pick kanye or eminem but picking something ppl have heard of at least will tempt more people.

i guess so. really i guess people should just use their own damn minds to do what they want, they are in charge that week. personally when i do my super electro week I think I am going to make some homemade mega comp because none of the great things from that era were ever really on a whole album.
