After the success of ILX spreading their wisdom my way about Jazz and Funk, I'm thinking of starting some [GENRE] FOR ILX's IGNORANT threads so we can all appreciate in music we may be interested in but don't really know where to start and possibly have others help. So what do you want to see most urgently?

All sub genres surely to be held within the larger groupings. Sorry for my ignorance on some of the genre names. Feel free to have write-ins.

Voting metal btw, because I know I like Sabbath and some newer things (Boris, Harvey Milk, Torche) but the rolling metal thread gave me a headache when I tried reading it and I don't really know where to begin. (generic internet recommendations are a mindfield of slipknot, dragonforce and 80s hair metal.)

adorable cheese inscription (a hoy hoy), Wednesday, 9 December 2009 11:36 (fifteen years ago)

Classical. I'm pathetic at the music rounds on University Challenge.

The Devil's Avocado (Gukbe), Wednesday, 9 December 2009 11:41 (fifteen years ago)

Good idea. Voted hip hop but really greenhorns' guides to any of the non-rock things is always welcome.

Not sure whether genre or geography focus is the best way to go. Genre will attract detailed knowledge, great tips and people who really care - but could get too specialised too quickly. Geography could be terrific for trends and uncool stuff, and microgenres that never reach these shores - but would depend on ILX having posters on the ground, and I've got no idea whether we have a presence in the Caribbean or wherever.

Ismael Klata, Wednesday, 9 December 2009 11:43 (fifteen years ago)

Yeah, I wasn't too sure about that but I think we could make it work. And you reminded me, I forgot reggae and dancehall and dub :( may start again later but now i must go post ilx secret santas. maybe a mod could put it in?

adorable cheese inscription (a hoy hoy), Wednesday, 9 December 2009 11:46 (fifteen years ago)

And shift this onto ILM while (s)he's at it?

Ismael Klata, Wednesday, 9 December 2009 12:37 (fifteen years ago)

I'm years behind in electronic music - I'm just getting into minimal shit and decent techno as house and balearic and stuff is all coming and going, plus I'm no DJ and don't collect vinyl, so I have to rely a lot on internets stuff and full artist albums, which don't reflect what's going on in clubs in my experience. So that.

Asian music. Sounds like a bracing task, having to learn about all of it.

I don't know anything about 'classic' jazz or much about classical but it's not something that keeps me awake at night. (Although I'd love to learn if I had more time.)

classical, but there are definitely genres here like jazz or punk which I know some about, but not nearly as much as I'd like

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Friday, 11 December 2009 01:05 (fifteen years ago)

so anyway I always wanted to hear more Reggae. I only have a handfull of reggae/dub cds (yes marley cds, augustus pablo, toots & the maytals, peter tosh boxset and 2 lps - the obvious stuff)
But i would also like to investigate more classial, blues and hip-hop at some point.

the other stuff in your poll im well versed in or have heard enough to dislike.

Classical for sure, especially 20th century stuff.

voted soul, could've easily have voted rn'b too. i'd love to hear the songs all hip hop's dusty soul samples were picked from, as well as obviously ones that aren't sampled and are great.

taoiseachizown (samosa gibreel), Friday, 11 December 2009 01:20 (fifteen years ago)

Jazz, Funk, and Soul. Jazz has traditionally had little to no effect on me, so I'm kind of waiting unitl my 30's when I'll 'get it' otherwise I'd kill to have a comprehensive knowledge of soul and funk (fucking indie rock teen-years ruining the foundations for a proper musical orientation) but am just to intimidated to start.

I wouldn't be surprised btw if most ilxors are happy with what they listen to and dont want to come out of their comfort zone , so maybe that coulda been one of the options.

Also why do people say "I'll try that genre when I'm older and might like it then"?

Pfunkboy : The Dronelord vs The Girly Metal Daleks (Herman G. Neuname), Friday, 11 December 2009 16:31 (fifteen years ago)

Sonny Uplands (Tom D.), Friday, 11 December 2009 16:36 (fifteen years ago)

I will admit I just downloaded some Miles Davis, John Coltrane, Ornette Coleman & Albert Ayler albums off a blog, cos now I'm in my 30s "maybe I'll like jazz". I probably won't, but I feel like I should at least give it a go. I do not have any actual logical reasoning for why people get into jazz when they get older.

When I was maybe 19 I decided that I should make a concerted effort to 'get into' jazz and got 'Machine Gun' by Peter Brotzmann out of the library. Don't think I really got anything from it at all. I pretty much just stumble shortsightedly into genres at will since then (and bought a Brotzmann CD two days ago oddly enough)

Dark, promiscuous five-year-old (DJ Mencap), Friday, 11 December 2009 16:48 (fifteen years ago)

Also why do people say "I'll try that genre when I'm older and might like it then"?

i'm one of these people, wrt jazz at least, and i think it has a lot to do with my (short) attention span. i have liked jazz before, but the only stuff i can really dig into is duke ellington or mingus, where there's really a strong, cohesive melodic narrative that i can grab onto. whenever i put on a miles davis record i'm like "WOO-HOO! why don't i listen to this stuff more often?" for a few minutes, then when it's time to turn it over i realize i'd been daydreaming for the past 15 minutes. if i really wanted to, i could overcome this today probably, but life is long and there's tonnes of non-jazz music that rubs me just fine at the moment. so i've put it off for when i'm older.

Are you really enjoying it if you still refer to it as "annoying howling"?

Stereo no aware (Daruton), Friday, 11 December 2009 17:02 (fifteen years ago)

Getting into different genres music as you get older is one of the good things about aging.

Even if you are kind of slack about it, you can hear a whole lot more music in 50 years than in 25. So if you love music as a young person, you will probably love more and different music as a geezer.

Also, for younger people, musical taste tends to be more connected to social relationships and personal style. When you get ancient, you're less influenced by those things and it's easier to get interested in genres you might have ignored earlier.

the onimo effect (James Redd and the Blecchs), Friday, 11 December 2009 17:05 (fifteen years ago)

how odd. i was "classically trained" in music as a child so i didn't actually listen to much rock or pop until i was about 12 or 13 so i really don't think of classical music or opera as something you have to "grow into" - it was almost like my foundation music and everything else had to be discovered or learned to appreciate

(then again the first "pop concert" type thing i ever attended was philip glass, so that kinda explains a lot about me and my musical taste)

WmC, Friday, 11 December 2009 17:18 (fifteen years ago)

There's tons of opera that could never be construed as 'bellowing' 'howling' 'wailing' or whatever. If this kind of singing is what bothers you, basically avoid anything composed by an Italian or German and you're set. Debussy, Britten, Janacek, Berlioz, that oughta get you started. Actually you'll do fine with Italian opera from the Baroque too.

I 'grew into' classical music starting at about age 25 and was maniacally consumed with it by age 27. It was largely due to Talk Talk and Scott Walker's Tilt rewriting my DNA and not being able to find anything else in rock/avant-rock that pushed the same buttons that I ended up in the classical furrows.

My answer to this thread question is Bollywood and Bhangra. So huge, no idea what to do but I love what little i know. A good series of podcasts or mixes would help, along with a reduction in my required amount of sleep per day.

I was gonna put Grateful Dead (since they seem to be almost a genre of otheir own, and I'm fascinated by the whole "cult" of travelling for hundreds of shows, collecting the boots etc.), but I've heard enough and read enough to figure out that I like, at best, half of any performance they ever gave.

I'm listening to them on archive.org this morning though (New Jersey 8/6/76) and really digging a lot of it.

Pfunkboy : The Dronelord vs The Girly Metal Daleks (Herman G. Neuname), Friday, 11 December 2009 18:48 (fifteen years ago)

The problem I have with techno, house, IDM etc is the genre divisions, shaved thinner than white truffles. One slight change in tempo or beat and suddenly you've got a whole new genre, something that barely seems noteworthy to me is now the hottest thing since canned bread to someone else, worth months of study and tens of thousands of words. Definitely can't keep up with the players, with or without a score card.

WmC, Friday, 11 December 2009 18:49 (fifteen years ago)

I lost track of techno, house and most IDM about 5 years back. I do like some stuff now and again but Im just not as into it as i was mid 90s-early 00s(was really into it). The days of being on the IDM mailing list are long gone.

Well, I'm 21 now and only just started having any sort of an interest in soul/funk so...

and xpost: that's all avoidable, and being antitetical to knowing nothing about, is worth avoiding. One of the really fun things about discovering new genres is still being able to approach it outside of pre-set distinctions and the like, it shouldn't stop you from diving in (and to be honest, too many genre sub-divisions doesn't really substantiate a reason to not listen to a pretty vast body of music).

Tynan... Why is there no electrosoul option here! Also I would have voted for disco had it been her.
