If anyone deserves his own thread, this guy does. He loved music. Search: anything on Original Music.

Oh man, RIP. By way of his records he introduced to so much stuff that I might not have heard or that would have been lost to time.

I think I have 1 Original Music cassette, Africa Dances, and have been meaning to read his 2 books Latin Tinge and Black Music of 2 Worlds. A pioneer. RIP

oooof, my world-music hero. lemme dig around and find a link to an awesome radio show on WXYC in chapel hill that two of my friends did last year featuring the recordings and some interviews of john storm roberts. also, ill post a link for my upcoming KUSF show, where i'll run an hourlong tribute to the man.

Aw that sux! RIP. The man was epic. Very generous and sweet. And Original Music was one of the best indie labels of all-time. John, you will be missed. :(

Did not know he lived in Kingston. Should have looked him up :(

RIP JSR :( I'd love to read some of his writing, and I'm barely familiar with Original Music at all.

It's hard to answer that unless you want to give me a commission to write a book.

This comes back to the nonsense about music as the universal language. They don't speak the language and they don't want to.

Hasn't Mississippi Records bootlegged many of his releases with no credits?

RIP awesome man. i guess the folks at mississippi will be ripping off one of his compilations in his honor.

figuratively, but in a very real way (amateurist), Saturday, 12 December 2009 01:52 (fifteen years ago)

There is actually a note on the two JSR-based comps they released that says something like "Eternal thanks & gratitude to John Storm Roberts."

ian, Saturday, 12 December 2009 02:11 (fifteen years ago)

but anyway, we don't need another thread about that.

I wonder if that other Ned, Ned Sublette, has paid his respects yet?

I'm on Sublette's e-mail list and I don't recall him saying anything yet.
