I found 2 unlabelled CDrs, the Clash one and the SG one.

one of these albums is an all-time classic. the other is by the clash.

Haven't heard that specific Clash recording, but I could listen to the bass players for either act all day long.

Otherwise, SG by a mile.

The Clash are an easy target for hipsters who made some great records. SG has become an unimpeachably hip name but did release some awful drivel. Most people's classic SG album versus no-one's favorite Clash album.

So, The Clash. And get the fuck off my fucking lawn!

Soukesian, Friday, 11 December 2009 17:16 (fifteen years ago)

Yeah, not really a fair poll. So I'm picking The Clash on principal.

Jazzbo, Friday, 11 December 2009 17:20 (fifteen years ago)

I was obviously picking an easy target, but in mitigation it's more because:

1) I've heard the Clash so much, some things like that live CD I only need to hear once. Even though it's 'historic' and all that, and nice to have etc, it's too unsurprising. Isn't it?

2) Yes, a 'cool' and 'hipster' one, possibly a bit dull due to it's ubiquity. But I felt happier because I must have played it ooh, 3 times up to now? (It was my first KazAA d/l I believe, or was it that other one.. Napster (old skool, if it don't d/l fully you don't get the track).

So, there you go.

You could've said this in reference to London Fucking Calling and I wouldn't have batted an eye.

Don't care much for the Clash, but firmly beleive Melody Nelson to be the most overrated Rock Snob album ever made (I'll stick with Comic Book for my Serge; and prefer Jacques Dutronc for my 60s Francophone pop, so am going Shea.

ithappens, Sunday, 13 December 2009 12:39 (fifteen years ago)

Live at Shea is pretty needless in the wake of From Here to Eternity, but I'm just not a member of the Serge Gainsbourg faith.

generally not a fan of serge, but I do like this record, mostly due to vannier's input.

never have understood the clash though.

m the g, Sunday, 13 December 2009 14:46 (fifteen years ago)

Well, maybe I d/l it in the first place bec\use of the "rock snob" thing, to hear for myself.

Dunno, it kind of cheered me up at the time.

Maybe today is a "Clash live" day, but then again I have a d/l of their gig in Jamaica (thanks to the old defunct "Clash Resource", and it's certainly more enjoyable (The Clash themselves aren't snarky/sulky here))

Mark G, Monday, 14 December 2009 08:22 (fifteen years ago)

I really like Shea Stadium - Kosmo's intro is funny and it's cool how they intro the band with a different singer on the first three songs (London Calling, Police On My Back, Guns of Brixton). The only thing I don't like about late-era live Clash is the overlong Magnificent Seven workout.

Dr.C, Monday, 14 December 2009 10:25 (fifteen years ago)

"melody nelson" is not my favourite gainsbourg that would be by far "l'homme à tête de choux" but still. if it had been the buzzcocks instead of the clash the fight would have been more interesting though.

"Well, maybe I d/l it in the first place bec\use of the "rock snob" thing, to hear for myself."

I bought it for that reason. Then I listened to it. And then I thought, this is rubbish.

ithappens, Monday, 14 December 2009 15:20 (fifteen years ago)

Which is why it's nice to be able to d/l

We're all hipsters who made great records. Wait.

Ned Raggett, Monday, 14 December 2009 15:38 (fifteen years ago)

Ha, I thought the same thing.

Tlön, Uqbar, Morbius Tertius (James Redd and the Blecchs), Monday, 14 December 2009 15:50 (fifteen years ago)

The Clash is not the Clash without Topper Headon, for anything after or beyond the first album, but Terry Chimes was at least the original drummer on "Career Opportunities," which is great here, and I do love the version of "Police on My Back." The Bonds live recordings are far more compelling. So I'm not voting.

Pete Scholtes, Monday, 14 December 2009 19:34 (fifteen years ago)

Nah, Terry is proper Clash. But of course they were crap after Keith Levene left.

Automatic thread bump. This poll is closing tomorrow.
