Fleetwood Mac?
Steely Dan?
Others?

I guess the followup is who divides ILM posters the most?

bands or singers, I mean, sorry

iago g., Sunday, 13 December 2009 02:01 (fifteen years ago)

Sly and the Family Stone, Kraftwerk, Talking Heads, The Clash are some others

kornrulez6969, Sunday, 13 December 2009 02:16 (fifteen years ago)

clash and t.heads are far from universally loved. they're more in the divisive category.

does anyone not like public enemy? (are they willing to say so?) or run-d.m.c.?

hellzapoppa (tipsy mothra), Sunday, 13 December 2009 02:23 (fifteen years ago)

talking heads just won the 80s poll. Hardly divisive.

Tied Up In Geir (Geir Hongro), Sunday, 13 December 2009 02:34 (fifteen years ago)

and it's true remain in light won that poll, but if you read the heads threads there's an awful lot of unlove.

hellzapoppa (tipsy mothra), Sunday, 13 December 2009 02:34 (fifteen years ago)

there was a poll, of sorts. i remember an earlier thread along these lines but can't find it.

Look up threads with white dudes who play blues especially Stevie Ray Vaughn, that stuff will bring up some harsh venom. A couple of those threads ended up getting locked.

billstevejim, Sunday, 13 December 2009 06:04 (fifteen years ago)

Parliament/Funkadelic would also have to be on the ILM Mount Rushmore. Everybody likes, or at least respect them massively.

kornrulez6969, Sunday, 13 December 2009 06:12 (fifteen years ago)

Most divisive is easy: Mariah Carey.

Check the threads...there are some pretty big fans of her on ILM, to put it mildly. There's also another equally passionate faction who think she sucks ass.

Can't believe this is a new thread.

kingkongvsgodzilla, Sunday, 13 December 2009 11:45 (fifteen years ago)

It's surely not The Beatles although it should have been IMO. I think most people here respect The Beatles to some extent, as in like some of their output, but those who (in spite of that) consider them overrated are probably in majority here. They may be one of the greatest white guys with guitars bands ever, but they were white guys with guitars, and some people just can't get over that here.

Tied Up In Geir (Geir Hongro), Sunday, 13 December 2009 11:54 (fifteen years ago)

My Bloody Valentine
Sly and the Family Stone
Kraftwerk
The Clash
New Order
The Fall
Can
The Beatles
Joy Division
The Kinks
The Rolling Stones
The Smiths
Velvet Underground
T Rex

Mark G, Tuesday, 15 December 2009 15:40 (fifteen years ago)

Fleetwood Mac – OK but ILM's love for 'em is boring as hell
Steely Dan – I like them but I don't spend much time listening to them
Creedence – the bees knees
Neil Young – great
My Bloody Valentine – blah blah blah, no they were good, it must be said
Sly and the Family Stone – what's not to like?
Kraftwerk – love at first sight
Talking Heads – love some of their stuff, but left cold by most of it
The Clash – grew out of them when I was 16
New Order – haven't listened to them in ages, but obv. great
Public Enemy – respect and all that, but I'm not going to be listening to them too often
Run DMC – should listen to them again!
Pet Shop Boys – again, respect them and what they do but I've got better things to do
The Fall – loved them once upon a time
Curtis Mayfield – obv. great
Fela Kuti – like what I've heard but haven't heard that much
Parliament/Funkadelic – hard to beat really
Aphex Twin – never did much for me
Herbie Hancock – comme ci, comme ca
Can – crazy name, crazy guys, who can top 'em?
The Roots – have I heard them?
Madlib – ditto
The Beatles – twist (and shout) my arm and I will admit they were quite good in places
Cocteau Twins – never made much of an impression on me
Joy Division – great, but I haven't made any effort to listen to them in years
The Kinks – really great
Massive Attack – undoubtedly good
The Pixies – grew out of them
Radiohead – in one ear and out the other
The Rolling Stones – hard to argue against
Roxy Music – smashing!
The Smiths – cannot be arsed with this lot, though they were obv. talented
Sonic Youth – got bored with them eventually
Talk Talk – great
Velvet Underground – love that knows no bounds
Yo La Tengo – who?
Brian Eno – I <3 Bri
Stevie Wonder – The Genius
T Rex – the most fun you can have with your bellbottoms on
ELO – fun group
Abba - even more fun group

Sonny Uplands (Tom D.), Tuesday, 15 December 2009 15:44 (fifteen years ago)

i actually counted the smiths as love, mark. kraftwerk too i think. should we do a poll with all acts with 5 and more votes?

alex in mainhattan, Tuesday, 15 December 2009 15:47 (fifteen years ago)

No, you need to do a series of polls where you vote one out each week.

We should have called Suzie and Bobby (NickB), Tuesday, 15 December 2009 15:49 (fifteen years ago)

but the one act who gets voted out last is not necessarily the one which is most loved. it's just the one people find less annoying.

alex in mainhattan, Tuesday, 15 December 2009 15:53 (fifteen years ago)

tom, is fun group a subset of love?

alex in mainhattan, Tuesday, 15 December 2009 15:56 (fifteen years ago)

"Like", I'd say

Sonny Uplands (Tom D.), Tuesday, 15 December 2009 15:58 (fifteen years ago)

the problem with polling this is that there are so many gradations of love/hate

should my LIKE A GOD TO ME count more than a vague shrug of not really being familiar with?

should a vague "used to love" have the same weight as HATE HATE HATE KILL WITH GUNS?

the only way to do this would be a weighted average. with write-in votes. and lots of maths

Karen Tregaskin, Tuesday, 15 December 2009 15:59 (fifteen years ago)

HATE HATE HATE KILL WITH GUNS has nothing to do with love so I think it should just be ignored in this context. The same goes for shrug. If we'd poll all acts with 5 or more love votes we would almost poll all suggested acts (except Run DMC, Massive Attack, Yo La Tengo, Herbie Hancock, Roots, Madlib, ELO and Abba!). The whole thing seems rather pointless as the usual suspects will win anyway.

alex in mainhattan, Tuesday, 15 December 2009 16:07 (fifteen years ago)

bullshit, ilm hates black music

The Modern Whig Party, Tuesday, 15 December 2009 16:08 (fifteen years ago)

you're saying that hatred has nothing to do with love? this isn't a binary, it's a sliding greyscale. i mean if you're going to measure something as abstract as "love" you've got to quantify it somehow.

though perhaps hatred isn't the opposite of love wrt music - indifference is? can a big big love be cancelled out or balanced by dozens of shrugs?

Karen Tregaskin, Tuesday, 15 December 2009 16:11 (fifteen years ago)

a big love obviously cannot be cancelled by anything. it can only be boosted by other big loves.

alex in mainhattan, Tuesday, 15 December 2009 16:19 (fifteen years ago)

right then i'm creating an army of sock puppets to make big big love with me

Karen Tregaskin, Tuesday, 15 December 2009 16:23 (fifteen years ago)

Is that a Fleetwood Mac big love or a Pixies big big love?

Sonny Uplands (Tom D.), Tuesday, 15 December 2009 16:24 (fifteen years ago)

as long as it isn't a big mac love any love is a good love

alex in mainhattan, Tuesday, 15 December 2009 16:27 (fifteen years ago)

Fleetwood Mac - Like, closer to indifferent for some of their stuff though
Steely Dan - never listened to them
Creedence - ditto
Neil Young – indifferent mostly, but haven't listened to that much
My Bloody Valentine – life-changingly wonderful when i first heard them, still love.
Sly and the Family Stone – never heard
Kraftwerk – never got into
Talking Heads – love love love
The Clash – mostly indifferent, but like a few songs.
New Order – indifferent, and would propose Blue Monday as the most overrated song of all time. love "Regret" though.
Public Enemy – love some tracks, but haven't listened to in a long time.
Run DMC – don't like.
Pet Shop Boys – generally indifferent, the odd moment here or there i suppose
The Fall – ditto
Curtis Mayfield – never heard
Fela Kuti – ditto
Parliament/Funkadelic – sort of ditto
Aphex Twin – Selected Ambient Works Vol. 2 = masterpiece, otherwise merely like
Herbie Hancock – never heard
Can – only heard tago mago, which i've never been able to get into
The Roots – phrenology is an ok album
Madlib – never heard
The Beatles – love
Cocteau Twins – love
Joy Division – half a dozen fantastic moments - "Disorder" and "Atmosphere" in particular - otherwise very overrated
The Kinks – don't like, apart from "Waterloo Sunset"
Massive Attack – like
The Pixies – love
Radiohead – love some stuff, merely like other stuff
The Rolling Stones – some good songs, but never obsessed over them
Roxy Music – love
The Smiths – love
Sonic Youth – don't like
Talk Talk – last two albums utter masterpieces - "New Grass", on a good day, quite possibly my favourite piece of music ever composed.
Velvet Underground – love
Yo La Tengo – never properly gave a wiggle
Brian Eno – like him as musician by himself, love some of his other associations
Stevie Wonder – never gave a proper fondle
T Rex – some good songs, i suppose
ELO – love what little I've heard
Abba - love

ELO – couldn't care less
Abba - no, not really

Sonny Uplands (Tom D.), Wednesday, 16 December 2009 13:02 (fifteen years ago)

Wasn't there an old thread (2002-3, maybe) where we discovered that XTC were the only band that were hated by virtually nobody on ILM? That's not the same as LOVE LOVE LOVE, but a high degree of "not hate" (i.e. having a very high approval rating) also counts for something ...

NoTimeBeforeTime, Wednesday, 16 December 2009 13:03 (fifteen years ago)

i don't hate xtc but i don't like them neither. which may prove your theory. actually my problem with xtc is that i do not get them most of the times.

XTC has got a major boost since then thanks to beloved ILX sockpuppet "gangsta andy partridge".

Sonny Uplands (Tom D.), Wednesday, 16 December 2009 13:10 (fifteen years ago)

think about how you feel about some maiden aunt you see, like, once every three years

now think about your girlfriend

now try to tell me that the most "not hated" artist is the same as the "most loved" band

I wondered why the Beach Boys weren't on the list

Sonny Uplands (Tom D.), Wednesday, 16 December 2009 13:12 (fifteen years ago)

btw the band used the most as a punchline on ILX? Gay Dad or Killing Joke?

no mate bruce springsteen is the american jimmy barnes (King Boy Pato), Wednesday, 16 December 2009 13:12 (fifteen years ago)

It's more Gay Dad's drummer than the whole band

Sonny Uplands (Tom D.), Wednesday, 16 December 2009 13:13 (fifteen years ago)

what i feel for the beach boys, although it involves a substantive amount of respect and warm fuzziness, is not love

i don't think this question is about merely liking or tolerating, it's about that kind of slavish fanboy devotion that makes ilm such an interesting/frustrating place to inhabit sometimes
