Best song from my friend's best of 1999 playlist

Combination "Now That's What I Call Music" and indie faves. So much is left off in the way of major pop singles, but that's what makes it interesting to me, and there are some killer tunes here.

I voted Northern Lites but I really love that Magnetic Fields song, the note he holds near the end is just wow!

Salvador Dali Parton (Turangalila), Monday, 14 December 2009 01:43 (fifteen years ago)

A playlist from hell, a music year from hell, apparently.

Anyway: Steal My Sunshine, by a mile.

Daniel, Esq., Monday, 14 December 2009 01:46 (fifteen years ago)

Your friend is about two years late with that Spiritualized song, and possibly a year early with the Blink 182 as well.

Space Battle Rothko (Matt DC), Monday, 14 December 2009 01:47 (fifteen years ago)

Didn't' that Spiritualized song come out in like 97?

This was a great year for singles and I can't figure out what to vote for -- Though I guess "You Get What You Give" is unbeatable

Chillwave Is an Ill Wave (askance johnson), Monday, 14 December 2009 02:23 (fifteen years ago)

Well "Steal My Sunshine" is the only song here that made MY best of 1999 mix...

Hideous Lump, Tuesday, 15 December 2009 02:54 (fifteen years ago)

Steal My Sunshine here too. In fact, i would keep the first and last track on this mix and delete the rest.

brotherlovesdub, Tuesday, 15 December 2009 03:02 (fifteen years ago)

a playlist from hel

Most of these songs are perfect pop wtf. This is my ideal NOW! comp.

Voted for "You Get What You Give" over "Steal My Sunshine," "Spit on a Stranger," Sugar Ray, and Backstreet Boys.

Hey baby, won't you step inside my Hyundai?

kingkongvsgodzilla, Tuesday, 15 December 2009 03:07 (fifteen years ago)

"All Star" would be a fondly remembered old fave if it weren't the most overplayed song of the past 10 years.

Hideous Lump, Tuesday, 15 December 2009 03:11 (fifteen years ago)

ha see i havent heard it in like, at least six or seven years, so i'd love to hear it once or twice on the radio

k3vin k., Tuesday, 15 December 2009 03:36 (fifteen years ago)

All-Star: Can't miss you if you don't go away.

And I read that the guy who wrote 'Genie' was in a 70s soft rock band (name escapes me now) and that he also wrote some of the 98 Degrees songs, including the one here.

Cunga, Tuesday, 15 December 2009 03:43 (fifteen years ago)

Well does he like butter tarts?

Bastards of Young Dro, Tuesday, 15 December 2009 03:59 (fifteen years ago)

Len - Steal My Sunshine
Backstreet Boys - I Want It That Way
Christina Aguilera - Genie in a Bottle
Spiritualized - Ladies and Gentlemen, We Came Out in 1997
Magnetic Fields - Luckiest Guy on the Lower East Side
Blur - Coffee and TV
Fatboy Slim - Praise You
Lauren Hill - Doo Wop (That Thing)

blur's probably my sentimental favorite, but maybe that's just the video talking

xpost. The only reason they keep me around here is to chime in at moments exactly like this one.

Soft Rock Guy is Steve Kipner, who also wrote Physical for Olivia Newton John. He was in Skyband, Friends, and Tin Tin back in the 70's, all great groups not on CD. You can connect him in a couple of degrees to like everyone in the music business...

My pick is blur.

Laryn, Christina or Blur at a push. Not that into this selection.

Communi-Bear Silo State (chap), Tuesday, 15 December 2009 19:15 (fifteen years ago)

Definitely "Magnetic Fields - Luckiest Guy on the Lower East Side" - I still listen to it at least once a month, what a great pop song!

she started dancing to that (Finefinemusic), Tuesday, 15 December 2009 20:16 (fifteen years ago)

goddamn i forgot about that len song, top 3 easy

k3vin k., Tuesday, 15 December 2009 21:24 (fifteen years ago)

Thought it was gonna be an easy choice ("Steal My Sunshine") until I worked my way further down the list. Beck, Sixpence, Lauren Hill, Spiritualized, Pavement all classix. Nuts!

★彡☆ ★彡 (ENBB), Friday, 18 December 2009 02:50 (fifteen years ago)

Not enough love for "Northern Lites" though i would still have Lauryn number one.

Number None, Friday, 18 December 2009 03:12 (fifteen years ago)

Lots of good songs on here that I never heard in '99. Too bad that the voting has now scrambled the original track order because I was thinking of making this mix myself.
