^^ yes. "Date Stamp"

balearific, Monday, 14 December 2009 04:56 (sixteen years ago)

One of my all time top five albums. I voted Date Stamp also.

Dr.C, Monday, 14 December 2009 15:28 (sixteen years ago)

"The Look Of Love". Out of the non-singles, I love "Show Me" in particular.

Tied Up In Geir (Geir Hongro), Monday, 14 December 2009 15:30 (sixteen years ago)

Voted Poison Arrow, although this:

<falsetto>Chain up love inside the chain-store girl<falsetto>

is magical.

Date Stamp over Look of Love and All of My Heart. Damn near impossible, though, and probably only went with Date because I knew the singles but that track blew me away when I first heard the album.

The Devil's Avocado (Gukbe), Monday, 14 December 2009 15:37 (sixteen years ago)

Not much love for New Pop on ILM these days it seems....

fit and working again, Tuesday, 15 December 2009 15:29 (sixteen years ago)

I've been listening to this album a whole lot over the past year. Really wasn't sure what to vote...love the title track and pretty much the entire first side. Went "Show Me" because it's the first thing I heard beyond the single, and thus a sentimental fave.

Sean Carruthers, Tuesday, 15 December 2009 15:39 (sixteen years ago)

The LoL (pt 1). The bitter 'yippee-aye-yippee-aye-ay' kills me every time. Pretty much everything else clustered not far behind it - Show Me in second place maybe?

Parenthetic hound (woofwoofwoof), Tuesday, 15 December 2009 15:43 (sixteen years ago)

The only track I don't like here is 4 Ever 2 Gether. Kind of a downer after everything that went before.

The only songs here I could not consider voting for are the instrumentals. So many amazing tracks here.

Sorry

And Merry Christmas to ILMers past and present... isn't music fantastic?

cupid cupid

meisenfek, Tuesday, 15 December 2009 23:01 (sixteen years ago)

"All of My Heart" is so wonderfully over the top and the best and very much like a Nuremberg Rally for the broken hearted.

no mate bruce springsteen is the american jimmy barnes (King Boy Pato), Tuesday, 15 December 2009 23:05 (sixteen years ago)

the album is perfect even 4ever 2gether, i like the left-turn the mood takes at that point. it's not like there isn't a deep undercurrent of emotional sickness to most of the other songs, and this one just brings it out in the music. it's a palate cleanser after all that sweetness yo.

jabba hands, Tuesday, 15 December 2009 23:13 (sixteen years ago)

Now, more than ever

Sorry

I was hoping to see a link to that in this thread...

Andy K, Wednesday, 16 December 2009 00:00 (sixteen years ago)

The 2cd deluxe reissue, while not revelatory, was great fun with the odds and sods, especially the live gig.

Gerald McBoing-Boing, Wednesday, 16 December 2009 01:01 (sixteen years ago)

Automatic thread bump. This poll is closing tomorrow.

System, Saturday, 19 December 2009 00:01 (sixteen years ago)

I went "Date Stamp" -- but "4ever 2gether" is def. a subtle highlight, what w all the dark Fairlight on it. It's a bit like the "Once I stop being overly dramatic and clever, this is how I really feel."

For some of the same reasons, I love "All of My Heart," too -- but as a friend of mine said at the time it came out (third single, I believe) it seemed a bit vapid compared to the richness of the rest. I enjoy how it seems like the one non-ironic, honest moment here (a bit like Roxy's "Just Another High"), but in this case, it *is* kind of just a big power ballad.

Naive Teen Idol, Saturday, 19 December 2009 14:03 (sixteen years ago)

All of my Heart - the string arrangement is just astounding

Deluxe Merseybeat Wig (Jack Battery-Pack), Saturday, 19 December 2009 17:35 (sixteen years ago)

where is 'theme from mantrap'??

thomp, Saturday, 19 December 2009 17:42 (sixteen years ago)

oh, i never realised that was a bonus track! i always thought it made sense where it was

three years pass...

Pure pop perfection. Choosing one is too hard...Valentine's Day.

yugi ex, Saturday, 13 July 2013 09:33 (twelve years ago)

That's a good write up. Valentine's Day is indeed a great choice but there are no bad choices with this one.

I'd say this is my favourite album of all time these days, easily the album I've played the most in my life.

looks like an amazing read sir.

i have few hungover hours to kill tomorrow.

this has solved what to do ..

you have clearly been waiting for this one to write up for a long long time MC ..

mark e, Thursday, 26 September 2013 19:47 (twelve years ago)

I wondered why he took so long to update since his last post.

Damn.

first I think it's time I kick a little verse! (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 26 September 2013 19:48 (twelve years ago)

Good piece, MC. An old flame invited me to a smallish SF venue about a decade ago to see Fry and I went with some trepidation; as a teenager I'd been aware of and fond of ABC but somewhat surreptitiously and I was worried that it would be a sad spectacle. The show was brilliant.

Ma mère est habile Mais ma bile est amère (Michael White), Thursday, 26 September 2013 21:16 (twelve years ago)

This album is top ten all-time for Lord Sotosyn

first I think it's time I kick a little verse! (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 26 September 2013 22:45 (twelve years ago)

a fact i was not aware of until recently : visually, abc influenced age of chance.
the use of cycling gear was something that early doors abc incorporated and age of chance then ripped off.
i have no proof of this other than word of mouth from geoff t/aoc of course ..
was never aware of such a phase of abc myself ..
can any ilm'rs confirm that abc were involved in such a fashion statement ..
(or, could it be that geoff and his mates actually ripped off the cartoon variation and ended up at the cycle gear !?)

mark e, Thursday, 26 September 2013 22:54 (twelve years ago)

TPL is crazy good... and this is my fave entry. Never wanted it to end. haha

The "and yet it remains such a mistrusted record" bit is spot on. As an act, I'd say they're mistrusted too... but, buying their records and watching them change change change all the time was fantastic entertainment. Their continuous shifts in sound and image, career be damned, were hugely inspiring... and shaped most of my ideas about what I expect/desire out of artists.

Not sure I've ever been into another artist as much as I was into ABC back in my early teens. I chose Martin as my middle name at confirmation... and even dressed up for Halloween '85 as Zillionaire-era Mark White, with my friend as Martin Fry.

Ok... I should stop now.

mr.raffles, Friday, 27 September 2013 02:30 (twelve years ago)

No! My Martin Fry grippe immobilized me my 21st year; it lasted a while summer.

*whole

first I think it's time I kick a little verse! (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Friday, 27 September 2013 02:32 (twelve years ago)

ok. heh

A letter I rcvd from their fan club in '85:

http://itsabigailsparty.tumblr.com/

They told me "Vanity Kills" wasn't a hit and where I could buy clothes like Mark White's. bahahaha

mr.raffles, Friday, 27 September 2013 02:41 (twelve years ago)

They made a point of modeling their dudes and haircuts and Emulators in fall'85, didn't they?

first I think it's time I kick a little verse! (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Friday, 27 September 2013 02:49 (twelve years ago)

and cartoons!

They kinda reverted to normality in their US tv appearances at the time (which were, if i remember correctly, without Eden and David) and the US video for Vanity Kills, so... yeah... crazy clothes/fake sounds/cartoons was the order of the day for a year or so there!

mr.raffles, Friday, 27 September 2013 02:55 (twelve years ago)

I still prefer their third album though that is partly down to how popular it was at the dance club where my life got saved every weekend in 1985/6. The extended mix of "Be Near Me" was freedom itself.

combination hair (underrated aerosmith bootlegs I have owned), Friday, 27 September 2013 21:21 (twelve years ago)

in my early ILM days I once started an "Opportunities (Let's Make Lots of Money)" vs "How to Be a Zillionnaire" thread.

the objections to Drake from non-REAL HIPHOP people (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Friday, 27 September 2013 21:26 (twelve years ago)

yeah, remember that one

following the recent H17 revival, i felt the need to push the new sound system with this album.

good choice.

for me that is, not the neighbours.

mark e, Wednesday, 1 April 2015 20:34 (ten years ago)

Surprised 'Date Stamp' scored so high. It always seemed to me to be the forgotten track here. It's what I would have voted for if I'd seen this poll though at the time. "Love has no guarantee" indeed.

Bloody Snail, Wednesday, 1 April 2015 21:51 (ten years ago)

Would have voted for 'All Of My Heart', which is an all-time favourite of mine.

You’re being too simplistic and you’re insulting my poor heart (Turrican), Wednesday, 1 April 2015 23:00 (ten years ago)

Still my favourite album ever.
