Didn't need to think twice - 80s without hesitation. Earnest as it was, the early stuff connected with me more often than not, and very rarely went over the cliff into embarassing (let's count Rattle and Hum as the most blatant exception here).

The other decades there were bits here and there that I liked: Achtung Baby, "Vertigo", and uh.....that's about it.

Best half-decade: early '80s.

xhuxk, Monday, 14 December 2009 20:55 (fifteen years ago)

That's probably even closer to my feelings too, really...but yeah, will still give Joshua Tree its due, even if it's my least fave of the 80s studio work.

Sean Carruthers, Monday, 14 December 2009 20:58 (fifteen years ago)

Well since I can't choose the 70s (everyone knows they peaked with Three), I'll go 90s. As a whole, Zooropa is my favorite of their albums.

"80s studio work" is what is allowing you to ignore Rattle and Hum, right?

(for me, Achtung, Baby! is my favorite album but the combined might of BOW beats it)

hi dere i took all the live tracks out of rattle and hum and added in an obscurity from the same era to create a better studio album

Yeah, pretty much - I know there's some studio work on that album but really, it's such a dog's breakfast that I don't really count it as a studio album or a live album or whatever. It's just crud.

Sean Carruthers, Monday, 14 December 2009 21:44 (fifteen years ago)

Achtung Baby is one of their finest imo, but it's the only one I own and/ or care about after '88. i should probably revisit Zooropa though

Yeah Alfred! Speaking truth to power.

EZ Snappin, Monday, 14 December 2009 22:42 (fifteen years ago)

In terms of songs I can't leave behind, I count 20 from the '80s, 4 from the '90s, and 5 from the '00s, though I like the last three albums as wholes the way I did Boy, War, Under a Blood Red Sky, The Unforgettable Fire, and Zooropa. And I don't hate anything in the '90s-'00s the way I hate the worst on The Joshua Tree/Rattle and Hum, so go figure.

Pete Scholtes, Tuesday, 15 December 2009 18:48 (fifteen years ago)

The handful of U2 songs I quite like are from the 80s.

man... if not for pop the 90s would be pretty outstanding (sorry gear)

If you weren't there the first time, U2 makes you scratch your head or jump screaming out a window.

Voted 80s, but it's kinda hard because I feel like all of their decades have had their ups and downs.
The 80s began with some OK albums, then "Unforgettable Fire" and "Joshua Three" obvious highlights and "Rattle & Hum" a just as obvious low. The 90s began with "Achtung Baby", which was their all time best, but then the weaker "Zooroopa" and "Pop", which was generally not particularly good at all. In-between those two weaker albums they did release a great Batman single though.
And as for the 00s, two surprisingly good albums in the beginning and end of the decade, but the one in the middle was a bit more average.

Tied Up In Geir (Geir Hongro), Tuesday, 15 December 2009 23:08 (fifteen years ago)

The best U2 decade was 1984-1994 though. In spite of "Rattle And Hum".
