quiet and secretively we will always be together (Steve Shasta), Tuesday, 15 December 2009 08:25 (fifteen years ago)

i saw this guy play a *very* poorly promoted outdoor solo show in the mid 90s at some community college near LA, after the show he ended up drooling on the ground and drawing pictures with the drool. i can't remember what any of his music sounded like, other than one song was kinda like 1983 (a merman i will be).

quiet and secretively we will always be together (Steve Shasta), Tuesday, 15 December 2009 08:27 (fifteen years ago)

niandra lades is a pleasantly weird ~outsidery~ record, shadows collide with people is the most accessible one. sounds like jack white doing jerry garcia maybe.

what u think i steen for to push a crawfish? (BIG HOOS aka the steendriver), Tuesday, 15 December 2009 08:42 (fifteen years ago)

Sympathy vote for second record. First one is actually the best, though. Third one okay. The rest are imitations of himself? Don't listen to him at all anymore.

bamcquern, Tuesday, 15 December 2009 09:23 (fifteen years ago)

He was better on drugs, maybe. He lost his motor control.

bamcquern, Tuesday, 15 December 2009 09:24 (fifteen years ago)

The Ataxia records he did with Joe Lally totally rule. Wouldn't start with them, but I'd hop on their particular train of transfixing psychedelia pretty immediately after the start.

The post-Smiles records are otherwise pretty much collections of great guitar pop.

Brad Nelson (BradNelson), Tuesday, 15 December 2009 09:46 (fifteen years ago)

'To Record Only Water for Ten Days' by a pretty big margin.

spiny doughboy (baaderonixx), Tuesday, 15 December 2009 14:39 (fifteen years ago)

rad catalog imo

ice cr?m, Tuesday, 15 December 2009 14:41 (fifteen years ago)

To Record is pretty good actually. didn't he release like half of these in one year?

sonderangerbot, Tuesday, 15 December 2009 14:44 (fifteen years ago)

The Ataxia albums DO rule, and I also really like the DC EP (which I think came between The Inside of Emptiness and A Sphere in the Heart of Silence). The former was with Joe Lally and Josh Klinghoffer, and the latter was recorded ith Ian MacKaye (Frusciante is a huge Fugazi fan. I would love to know how they hooked up - I'm guessing it's through Rick Rubin, who's also a huge Fugazi fan).

I saw one of the few Ataxia live shows at the Knitting Factory in L.A. about five years ago and it was amazing.

niandra lades was pretty awesome, never heard any of the other

the finest of display name homies (s1ocki), Wednesday, 23 December 2009 01:01 (fifteen years ago)

niandra is the best because it was the first, and it's what i heard first, and it has some killer demented songs on it.

to record is a better ALBUM as a cohesive whole.

bum-sniff deviant (cutty), Wednesday, 23 December 2009 01:33 (fifteen years ago)

i'm voting niandra for the high school factor

bum-sniff deviant (cutty), Wednesday, 23 December 2009 01:33 (fifteen years ago)

the second record is truly disturbing. i wonder how much the CD sells for.

bum-sniff deviant (cutty), Wednesday, 23 December 2009 01:34 (fifteen years ago)

Niandra all the way. any album with a song titled "Your Pussy Is Glued To A Building On Fire" that isn't from a grindcore band gets my vote.

bum-sniff deviant (cutty), Wednesday, 23 December 2009 02:14 (fifteen years ago)

totally... i blew some stoned minds with that one back in HS

maha™a ghandi (s1ocki), Wednesday, 23 December 2009 03:32 (fifteen years ago)

ha so did i.

And now my dick is where? Oh, this is too rich (the table is the table), Wednesday, 23 December 2009 03:36 (fifteen years ago)

Isn't Ekkehard Ehlers supposed to be on one of these, or am I just imagining that?

with hidden noise, Wednesday, 23 December 2009 03:43 (fifteen years ago)

Shadows, just over Water for me.

lever pulled is an excellent song

like a mopey 'strawberry letter 23'

Right on man!

Nhex, Wednesday, 23 December 2009 23:10 (fifteen years ago)

Not that I would've voted for it but I wish DC EP also made it into the poll

Nhex, Wednesday, 23 December 2009 23:10 (fifteen years ago)

super sexy psycho fantasy world (uh oh I'm having a fantasy), Thursday, 24 December 2009 00:03 (fifteen years ago)

Dang. To Record Water is really uneven to me. I prefer Shadows, which, while overlong, is all those awesome pop elements of By the Way without Anthony Kiedis, plus some instrumentals thoroughly soaked in the bong water of the universe.

But my favorite record of his is the second disc of Niandra Lades: Usually Just a T-shirt. A bunch of untitled cuts in the skin.

Brad Nelson (BradNelson), Thursday, 24 December 2009 00:42 (fifteen years ago)

the second "disc" is "usually just a t-shirt"

bum-sniff deviant (cutty), Thursday, 24 December 2009 00:57 (fifteen years ago)

... that's what I said?

Brad Nelson (BradNelson), Thursday, 24 December 2009 01:06 (fifteen years ago)

no, there is no second disc. it's one CD. the album is actually called niandra lades andusually just a t-shirt.

bum-sniff deviant (cutty), Thursday, 24 December 2009 01:27 (fifteen years ago)

Ah, you are right! I have historically considered the two halves as so distinct that my memory created two discs out of them. Uh, then the second half of Niandra is my favorite shit that John has done.

Brad Nelson (BradNelson), Thursday, 24 December 2009 01:40 (fifteen years ago)

haha. what i'm saying is--you call the second half of niandra "usually just a t-shirt," because that's what it's called.

there is one instrumental on "usually just a t-shirt" that is one of the most beautifully layered melodic guitar pieces i have ever heard.

bum-sniff deviant (cutty), Thursday, 24 December 2009 01:47 (fifteen years ago)

fyi this is what he was like when did recorded "smile from the streets you hold"

bum-sniff deviant (cutty), Thursday, 24 December 2009 01:49 (fifteen years ago)

*when he recorded

bum-sniff deviant (cutty), Thursday, 24 December 2009 01:49 (fifteen years ago)

i need to listen to this ish again

j/k and the fa™an (s1ocki), Thursday, 24 December 2009 01:50 (fifteen years ago)

the instrumental i mentioned above is "untitled #6" and it's brilliant

bum-sniff deviant (cutty), Thursday, 24 December 2009 01:52 (fifteen years ago)

i taught myself most of these licks in high school i was prtety obsessed with his guitar playing

bum-sniff deviant (cutty), Thursday, 24 December 2009 01:52 (fifteen years ago)

untitled #6 is indeed a godsend

Nhex, Thursday, 24 December 2009 02:21 (fifteen years ago)

one year passes...

Playing the hell out of "Curtains" today. Great New Years record!

puff pastry hangman (admrl), Saturday, 1 January 2011 22:44 (fourteen years ago)

Kurt Cobain could have had this kind of career, if he'd wanted it.

puff pastry hangman (admrl), Saturday, 1 January 2011 22:53 (fourteen years ago)

I still have never heard any of these... haha.

i love you but i have chosen snarkness (Steve Shasta), Saturday, 1 January 2011 23:10 (fourteen years ago)

Also Ataxia (not on here because it is not solo) is so dope

puff pastry hangman (admrl), Sunday, 2 January 2011 00:41 (fourteen years ago)

Should I hear "Shadows..."? y/n?

puff pastry hangman (admrl), Sunday, 2 January 2011 00:42 (fourteen years ago)

Any word on that Ekkehard Ehlers thing? This thread is the first I've heard of that, but that sounds like a killer collab

Also, all the Record Collection LPs were robbed on this poll

If Assholes Could Fly This Place Would Be An Airport, Sunday, 2 January 2011 01:39 (fourteen years ago)

niandra ladies fr all time. blew my lil 18 y/o hc kid mind

bear, bear, bear, Sunday, 2 January 2011 01:54 (fourteen years ago)

decidedly non-posi

bear, bear, bear, Sunday, 2 January 2011 01:55 (fourteen years ago)

Kurt Cobain could have had this kind of career, if he'd wanted it.

I cannot convey in words how much I wish Kurt Cobain had been as obscure as solo-artist John Frusciante. Today's music would be immeasurably better.

that's not funny. (unperson), Sunday, 2 January 2011 02:07 (fourteen years ago)

Well I meant he could have made home-studio recordings instead of shooting himself.

puff pastry hangman (admrl), Sunday, 2 January 2011 03:03 (fourteen years ago)

Should I hear "Shadows..."? y/n?

yes yes yes

Nhex, Sunday, 2 January 2011 14:49 (fourteen years ago)

the first two albums are great, so overlooked, probably because of his chili pepper's association (at least, that's part of the reason I never listened to them for a long time).

akm, Sunday, 2 January 2011 17:10 (fourteen years ago)

Blood Sugar Sex Magic being so popular, I know more than a few ppl who looked into Niandra LaDes as a follow up. i don't think most people (or even RHCP fans) even realize that Frusciante put out all these solo albums, even the 2004 glut. no doubt that first CD has some amazing stuff though
