and like the britisher one, this is a much more inspiring list - swift, foxx and gaga all terrific. going w/foxx i think.

ke$ha needs to fuck off for real though.

lex pretend, Tuesday, 22 December 2009 12:32 (fifteen years ago)

Not perfect, but better. I rank:

Pitbull
Foxx
Swift
Gaga
Drake
Kesha
Tip
Kanye
Jigga
Miley

otm da hoosmarker (The Reverend), Tuesday, 22 December 2009 12:32 (fifteen years ago)

that list makes an excellent case for how a song can be as huge and inescapable as anything without getting to #1. this is also like the 4th poll thread this year where I've voted for "Blame It," no surprises there.

some dude, Tuesday, 22 December 2009 12:50 (fifteen years ago)

"You Belong With Me" or "Dead and Gone."

Hell is other people. In an ILE film forum. (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 22 December 2009 13:06 (fifteen years ago)

"You Belong With Me" over "Blame It".

Euler, Tuesday, 22 December 2009 13:09 (fifteen years ago)

wow, really? there was that much of a logjam at no. 2 too? that's crazy talk.

i voted for 'bad romance.' almost went w/'heartless.'

maura, Tuesday, 22 December 2009 13:14 (fifteen years ago)

taylor over gaga, but both made my singles top 10.

hellzapoppa (tipsy mothra), Tuesday, 22 December 2009 13:54 (fifteen years ago)

pitbull

looks like no really awesome songs got to #1 or #2

livinginthesunlightlovinginthemoonlighthavingawonderfultime (Curt1s Stephens), Tuesday, 22 December 2009 13:55 (fifteen years ago)

I really like "I Know You Want Me". I really liked the sped-up version of "Party in the USA" that was playing in the pub on Saturday but I think I'll vote for Pitbull here.

when i was your age i was thinking about how to kill people (Noodle Vague), Tuesday, 22 December 2009 13:57 (fifteen years ago)

Either Swift or Gaga. As recently as a week ago, I'd have said Swift, but "Bad Romance" is really growing on me.

Nuyorican oatmeal (jaymc), Tuesday, 22 December 2009 13:59 (fifteen years ago)

"Bad Romance" is ur-Gaga, and Gaga is ur-2009, so I'm going with that. I'm the other ladies too, the men less so (Ke$sha has grown on me, though "Tik Tok" melds with "Just Dance" in my head the way "Bad Romance" and "Poker Face" combine.

da croupier, Tuesday, 22 December 2009 14:06 (fifteen years ago)

only one i'm like "fuck that guy" to is Drake

da croupier, Tuesday, 22 December 2009 14:06 (fifteen years ago)

that should be "I'm cool with the other ladies too." Even more than the #1s it just feels like these are all serviceable jingles but there's basically nothing I'd go out of my way to make sure someone heard.

da croupier, Tuesday, 22 December 2009 14:09 (fifteen years ago)

cyrus

thurman merman (cozwn), Tuesday, 22 December 2009 14:19 (fifteen years ago)

M-E-H. guess i hate pop.

Blame It and Bad Romance are OK, sod the rest (probably have/would dance to Pitbull drunk but shit is just too lazy).

mdskltr (blueski), Tuesday, 22 December 2009 15:02 (fifteen years ago)

the Pitbull turns into the best thing ever when you are dancing to it with someone who you want and who wants you (preferably someone you just met). I'd go so far to say that if you haven't heard it in that context, you haven't really heard it. kind of a bummer to dance to by yourself, granted

otm da hoosmarker (The Reverend), Tuesday, 22 December 2009 15:15 (fifteen years ago)

I turn my head to the east, I see nobody by my side.

the fallacy with this argument (like the old trope that you have to be high and dancing to get techno) is that if you're dancing with someone you just met and will probably fuck, MOST songs will sound like the best thing ever.

da croupier, Tuesday, 22 December 2009 15:21 (fifteen years ago)

heh yes in that situation i think i would still rather be hearing/dancing to something like 'Toma' but i'm weird

mdskltr (blueski), Tuesday, 22 December 2009 15:23 (fifteen years ago)

it also sounds great otherwise tho

otm da hoosmarker (The Reverend), Tuesday, 22 December 2009 15:44 (fifteen years ago)

oh, I forgot to mention the singing it back and forth to each other, which is an important part of the aforementioned scenario

otm da hoosmarker (The Reverend), Tuesday, 22 December 2009 15:45 (fifteen years ago)

and then in the morning you can sing 'Blame It' at each other

mdskltr (blueski), Tuesday, 22 December 2009 15:56 (fifteen years ago)

if you haven't been on the dance floor with someone you've never met but wants your ass and "b r right" comes on and you start singing it back and forth to each other, you haven't heard the song imo

da croupier, Tuesday, 22 December 2009 15:59 (fifteen years ago)

if you like to hear Bad Romance and i mean HEAR Bad Romance...

mdskltr (blueski), Tuesday, 22 December 2009 16:02 (fifteen years ago)

xp: I haven't been in that situation and can accept that

otm da hoosmarker (The Reverend), Tuesday, 22 December 2009 16:02 (fifteen years ago)

i guess miley hasn't really heard "party in the usa" if she hasn't heard a jay-z song

da croupier, Tuesday, 22 December 2009 16:03 (fifteen years ago)

if you haven't had lady gaga drunk-dialing you at 2 in the morning...

hellzapoppa (tipsy mothra), Tuesday, 22 December 2009 16:04 (fifteen years ago)

ok, that's enough

otm da hoosmarker (The Reverend), Tuesday, 22 December 2009 16:08 (fifteen years ago)

Blame It, just over Best I Ever Had. It is hard to believe Blame It wasn't a #1, as I kind of think of that as THE 2009 song, or at least the 2009 summer song.

Dominique, Tuesday, 22 December 2009 16:27 (fifteen years ago)

anyone who doesnt vote for taylor swift should be literally murdered Casino-style - aluminum bats clanging against your skulls, then rolled into a ditch and buried alive

Swift/Gaga tie imo

"Bad Romance" all the way. Her best so far.

mdskltr (blueski), Tuesday, 22 December 2009 16:43 (fifteen years ago)

taylor swift's song is a homewrecker's charter!

thurman merman (cozwn), Tuesday, 22 December 2009 16:46 (fifteen years ago)

Voted Swift but only because I had to choose and think Gaga will win. I <3 both equally.

i think i might be the only one who votes Drake. that song earwormed me in a hard way, which i can't say about any of the others.

And now my dick is where? Oh, this is too rich (the table is the table), Tuesday, 22 December 2009 16:57 (fifteen years ago)

i like all of these songs except 'run this town' and 'tik tok.' i voted for 'party in the usa' cause it's freshest in my heart, but 'you belong with me' deserves the win over 'bad romance' if that's what it'll come down to.

taoiseachizown (samosa gibreel), Tuesday, 22 December 2009 20:31 (fifteen years ago)

Going for Gaga over Taylor, though it's close.

xhuxk, Tuesday, 22 December 2009 20:33 (fifteen years ago)

great list... I'm going with Taylor.

The Brainwasher, Tuesday, 22 December 2009 20:33 (fifteen years ago)

love all of these except for "Tik Tok", which is an abomination, and "Dead and Gone"

The Brainwasher, Tuesday, 22 December 2009 20:33 (fifteen years ago)

very interested to see if tik tok gets a vote

kaygee, Wednesday, 23 December 2009 00:04 (fifteen years ago)

i think we already had this poll basically, without "bad romance"?

k3vin k., Wednesday, 23 December 2009 00:50 (fifteen years ago)

still taylor, with gaga and foxx behind

k3vin k., Wednesday, 23 December 2009 00:50 (fifteen years ago)

"Dead and Gone" is great F U haters. Still voting Taylor though.

you gone float up with it (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Wednesday, 23 December 2009 03:55 (fifteen years ago)

the sad thing is take Kesha off of Tik Tok and you've got a pretty great club beat. she reminds me of Uffie from the Justice album but (miraculously) even more obnoxious. still don't think it's the worst on here, though ("run this town")

balearific, Wednesday, 23 December 2009 06:38 (fifteen years ago)

she reminds me of Uffie from the Justice album but (miraculously) even more obnoxious.

otm. i like 'the party' way better than anything else uffie or kesha have ever done, it's sad how little they could pull out of it.

taoiseachizown (samosa gibreel), Wednesday, 23 December 2009 16:08 (fifteen years ago)

"Tik Tok" sounds to me like what would happen if Tara Reid made a record.

Things I like about Tik Tok : the beat, and the snottiness.

Things I dislike about Tik Tok : the entire video.

Particularly the whole "Disney clone kiddie becomes a hipster" sort of vibe to it.

Siah Alan, Thursday, 24 December 2009 07:40 (fifteen years ago)

For serious answer would have to be somewhere between Justin's chorus on the T.I. and Bad Romance.

Both of which make great karaoke.

Siah Alan, Thursday, 24 December 2009 07:43 (fifteen years ago)

jt on dead and gone vs ye on run this town

all yoga attacks are fire based (rogermexico.), Thursday, 24 December 2009 14:17 (fifteen years ago)

Oh, Justin's chorus is great karaoke. But the Rev-some-dude faction has never cared for the rest, as they made clear on last year's T.I. thread.

Hell is other people. In an ILE film forum. (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 24 December 2009 14:22 (fifteen years ago)

haha faction. i dunno, it felt like overkill at the end of an album that covered the same thematic territory on other songs, and it seems like a dreary choice of a single that just happened to have a big star on it. i feel like if someone sang that at karaoke they'd be trying to bum everybody out.

forkslovecraftcthulhu (some dude), Thursday, 24 December 2009 15:03 (fifteen years ago)

otm. by the end of paper trail i was sick of the self-pity, and that song just wallows in it.

hellzapoppa (tipsy mothra), Thursday, 24 December 2009 15:10 (fifteen years ago)

See, the copy I downloaded in October 2008 had the sequence reversed, so I heard "Dead and Gone" first; naturally, it sounded fantastic.

Hell is other people. In an ILE film forum. (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 24 December 2009 15:23 (fifteen years ago)

You guys aren't wrong about the self-pity btw, but Justin's vocal -- the tone is something he's never attempted, and I wish he did more often instead of the falsetto -- overcomes my objections.

Hell is other people. In an ILE film forum. (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 24 December 2009 15:32 (fifteen years ago)

yeah it's prob one of justin's finest ever vocals, and i found it a lot more anthemic as a single than at the end of a whole album along the same theme

lex pretend, Thursday, 24 December 2009 18:01 (fifteen years ago)

plus it has a special place in my heart cuz i was on the set of the video, so it always brings back memories of being dressed for warm desert weather, freezing/drowning in freak torrential rains and sheltering in justin's trailer, on justin's bed

4 votes for tik tok!

taoiseachizown (samosa gibreel), Thursday, 31 December 2009 00:47 (fifteen years ago)

I'm looking for an online resource that will enable me to compile all the #2 / #3 top US songs of this decade. is there a free one, can it be confirmed that it's all subscription only, or can a person help me out?

wish I'd seen this year's list before the vote reordered the chronology

Milton Parker, Thursday, 31 December 2009 01:34 (fifteen years ago)

In no fucking world anywhere is "Run This Town" worse than "Tik Tok".

you gone float up with it (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Thursday, 31 December 2009 02:47 (fifteen years ago)

true but there should be no votes for either (also no votes for heartless--2008 is thataway guys)

call all destroyer, Thursday, 31 December 2009 02:50 (fifteen years ago)

Nah, "Run This Town" is decent-ish. I'd keep the beat and Rihanna's hook.

call all destroyer, Thursday, 31 December 2009 04:41 (fifteen years ago)

Its quite possible that I just hate fun.

But I can see no upside to Taylor Swift, at all. Its like you shoved the more annoyingly banal parts of pop country through the Avril school of songwriting. She's obviously very talented, but its that talent which effortlessly communicates a range of sentiments that I find either mildly insipid or deeply nauseating.

Our Song in particular makes me want to gouge out my eyes with a rusty spoon.

I've heard these songs probably 1500 times in the last year and a half, I just can't escape them.

Not at work, not at the supermarket, and not on ILX.

Tim and Chuck feel free to hate me now. I know I'm not going to win this one.

Siah Alan, Thursday, 31 December 2009 08:27 (fifteen years ago)

At least I can just ignore the spawn of Billy Ray.
