PIONEERS

when choosing between White Hammer, Killer, Masks and Chemical World, I have to bear into account that Masks is some righteous act of songwriting that will win my vote no matter how much deliberation I make

voted "Last Frame" - love that whole side sequence: The Quiet Zone.

side 2 of H To He ("Lost", "Pioneers...") probably next faves of this lot. also have a soft spot for "Out Of My Book", one of Peter Hammill's best early lovesongs.

Nearly missed this. Tough call. Voting for "Lost" but feel like I ought to vote for something off World Record. Or vote "Refugees" cos somebody shd.

well, World Record is frustratingly close to being brilliant, but is just a tiny bit too loose/full of guitar/repetitive/redolent of past glories to be another masterpiece.

like I say, I voted Masks because that's one of their strongest songs. Really wish they'd tightened up A Place To Survive and Meurglys III, and possibly ditched When She Comes for ripping off La Rossa and Scorched Earth, maybe their two best songs. Wondering can stay as it is.

Can't argue with any of those joint winners.

My favourite of these is "The Wave" but it's kind of a one-off
