Trans #1, Everybody's Rockin, inexplicably #2. I saw Neil twice on the Trans tour & the Everybody's Rockin & Old Ways tours also. Then I stopped seeing Neil & stopped buying records for awhile. So, no attachment to the last three, though Life was alright.

Trans by some distance, but "Mideast Vactation" off Life is some great weird shit.

Despite owning pretty much every single other album Neil has released, I still don't own and have never heard any of this era beyond Trans and Old Ways. Apparently I need to rectify this? Maybe not. Anyway, Trans for the win and Old Ways to place... by default (even though I do kinda like it).

Yes. So OTM.

The video for "Wonderin'" is great.

America's Next Most Disabled Ballerina (WmC), Wednesday, 30 December 2009 05:38 (fifteen years ago)

Everybody's Rockin' has "Wonderin'" and Life has "Prisoners of Rock 'n' Roll," and for me that's pretty much it--six years, two songs. In 27 years (I can't believe it...) I've managed to move from revulsion to indifference as far as Trans goes, but it's still the beginning of the end for me...for a few years, anyway. No vote.

I really like "Around the World" off Life, but I only know it off Lucky Thirteen. I acquired all of these albums some time back but the only one to I've heard is Trans. So I think I'll listen to the others before voting.

Euler, Wednesday, 30 December 2009 07:42 (fifteen years ago)

a Lucky Thirteen poll would be cool!

Hell is other people. In an ILE film forum. (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 30 December 2009 13:48 (fifteen years ago)

yeah, it would be; I'll wait until this poll ends to start it.

Euler, Wednesday, 30 December 2009 13:55 (fifteen years ago)

i've come to the conclusion that Landing On Water actually isn't completely worthless. the VERY over synthesised cold feel of it is kind of interesting despite the songwriting being pretty bad across the board.

"Hippie Dream" is an actual Good Song!

Hell is other people. In an ILE film forum. (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 30 December 2009 15:04 (fifteen years ago)

ok the obvious choice is trans but Life has some great shit and i have a LOT of love for Landing On Water. So weird and gaudy. Best I can compare it to is a Miami Vice soundtrack if Crockett was played by Crispin Glover.

da croupier, Wednesday, 30 December 2009 15:53 (fifteen years ago)

you can watch the bugfuck video for "Pressure" and some other goofy Landing On Water clips on Tim Pope's website.

da croupier, Wednesday, 30 December 2009 15:56 (fifteen years ago)

direct links to the other LOW videos: Weight Of The World ("this neil young character is called marco. apart from already having a wee alcohol problem, marco's drink is spiked by a lady with breast implants. marco begins to see the world differently, and looking down at a swimming pool we too see through marco's eyes. eventually, marco is pushed into the pool where he drowns."), People On The Street (featuring cut-ins of Russ Tamblyn's feet for Neil's dance number) and Touch The Night (Neil as street reporter, one-shot)

da croupier, Wednesday, 30 December 2009 16:02 (fifteen years ago)

lol, "people on the street" is on youtube after all. "pressure" isn't so i didn't bother looking for the others

Plz post the video for "Hippie Dream" -- three minutes of Neil as Captain Ahab spearing Moby David Crosby-as-Moby-Dick.

Hell is other people. In an ILE film forum. (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 30 December 2009 16:15 (fifteen years ago)

might have to settle for CSN&Y's American Dream, which I think Julien Temple did.

da croupier, Wednesday, 30 December 2009 16:21 (fifteen years ago)

cut to 2:05 to see Neil in hair metal garb scaring the shit out of a shirtless Graham Nash

Automatic thread bump. This poll is closing tomorrow.

Daaamn.

Hell is other people. In an ILE film forum. (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Sunday, 10 January 2010 00:07 (fifteen years ago)

huh, totally missed this poll. But I too, would've probably voted Trans. I've said it on other threads, but you're better off sticking to bootlegs during this era.

tylerw, Sunday, 10 January 2010 04:34 (fifteen years ago)

yeah I ended up not voting b/c I haven't had time yet to relisten to these albums (should get to them this week but we'll see).

Euler, Sunday, 10 January 2010 08:03 (fifteen years ago)

here's a great Geffen-era bootleg -- w/ Crazy Horse in 1986. Landing on Water tunes, Trans tunes, Life tunes, the hits ... http://infinitefool.blogspot.com/2009/12/december-is-neil-young-month_19.html

tylerw, Sunday, 10 January 2010 22:38 (fifteen years ago)

twelve years pass...

Just listened to "Landing On Water" for the first time ever. The only positive thing I can say about it is the repeating guitar part on the last song is hilarious.

Rick O'Shea (Tom D.), Thursday, 14 April 2022 17:23 (three years ago)

It's fine. Way better than its two predecessors. "Hippie Dream" is one of his greatest, most scabrous songs, "Drifter" almost as taut, "Violent Side" and "Pressure" worthy listens.

So who you gonna call? The martini police (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 14 April 2022 17:27 (three years ago)

I've never heard the two previous albums but yikes if they're better than this dog.

Rick O'Shea (Tom D.), Thursday, 14 April 2022 17:30 (three years ago)

... I mean, worse!

Rick O'Shea (Tom D.), Thursday, 14 April 2022 17:31 (three years ago)

You don't care for these songs?

So who you gonna call? The martini police (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 14 April 2022 17:32 (three years ago)

I can't remember them but I didn't like them much when I was listening to them.

Rick O'Shea (Tom D.), Thursday, 14 April 2022 17:45 (three years ago)

“pressure” owns, “touch the night” owns, “people on the street” does not own
