No thread on YOB?
After the kerfuffle over the Middian name It was fantastic to see YOB reunite and come back with their best album yet.
All of their stuf is great, particularly Catharsis, but http://www.roadrunnerrecords.com/blabbermouth.net/reviewpics/YOB_Cessation.jpgIs the best comeback record ever, up there with Celtic Frost and Unsane in the great comeback album stakes. If you have never heard YOB, please go check em out!

hehe i was wondering when you would turn up
― Pfunkboy : The Dronelord vs The Girly Metal Daleks (Herman G. Neuname), Friday, 1 January 2010 00:46 (fifteen years ago)
Will they be your no1 album in the metal poll?
Am I allowed to vote for clients?
― Nate Carson, Friday, 1 January 2010 00:47 (fifteen years ago)
Of course. its an honest opinion. You are a fan before anything else. Its not like you are their label owner. Same goes for any of your clients. You can vote for anyone you like on the nominations. Im sure you voted last year?anyway vote away man.
― Pfunkboy : The Dronelord vs The Girly Metal Daleks (Herman G. Neuname), Friday, 1 January 2010 00:51 (fifteen years ago)
I've just been trying to catch up on the great releases I missed before voting. And yeah, I vote honestly wherever I'm allowed. Pazz & Jop prefers I not list clients, so I didn't there. Conflict of interest is something I have to watch closely because of my many endeavors.
― Nate Carson, Friday, 1 January 2010 00:58 (fifteen years ago)
well it's not a worry here. Vote away whenever you're ready!
― Pfunkboy : The Dronelord vs The Girly Metal Daleks (Herman G. Neuname), Friday, 1 January 2010 01:38 (fifteen years ago)
and i put plenty of yob vids on the companion thread too, feel free to post more o your clients and non-clients!

Back on the subject, I recall clearly the show where I first saw YOB when they supported us at Ash St Saloon with Sea of Green headlining. Mike was wearing a baseball cap, wire rimmed glasses, and a Hawaiian shirt in those days. But they played "Revolution" from their demo and we were all blown away.
― Nate Carson, Friday, 1 January 2010 02:04 (fifteen years ago)
What year was that? Hey is it true that the Yob demos are available on vinyl?
― Pfunkboy : The Dronelord vs The Girly Metal Daleks (Herman G. Neuname), Friday, 1 January 2010 02:06 (fifteen years ago)
Yes there is now a YOB demo vinyl. I still have the old CDr that I got in the mail too.
I guess that show was Nov 18th 2000. Crazy. I still have a few handbills somewhere that I made.
Mike sent the demo to Robwrong when he was still the main reviewer for Stonerrock.com. He came to practice and said "there's finally another doom band in Oregon", and we were stoked.
Since then, I booked essentially every YOB show outside of Eugene.
― Nate Carson, Friday, 1 January 2010 02:12 (fifteen years ago)
I dont have the cdr just mp3s, I need to get the vinyl. If i can find anywhere selling it. ATH is too expensive and to justify shipping you need to order more than 1 thing but now plus they wont mark down value so customs stops their packages so I cant order vinyl from them. And its not the kinda thing uk distros tend to get. When is the new album coming out on vinyl?
― Pfunkboy : The Dronelord vs The Girly Metal Daleks (Herman G. Neuname), Friday, 1 January 2010 02:20 (fifteen years ago)

There are major festivals in US and Europe where YOB can be seen in Spring 2010.
Not sure of the release date of the new album in vinyl. Has it been announced?
― Nate Carson, Friday, 1 January 2010 02:54 (fifteen years ago)
Not that I know of. I hoped you might know!
― Pfunkboy : The Dronelord vs The Girly Metal Daleks (Herman G. Neuname), Friday, 1 January 2010 02:55 (fifteen years ago)
YOB are doing Roadburn aren't they?
― Pfunkboy : The Dronelord vs The Girly Metal Daleks (Herman G. Neuname), Friday, 1 January 2010 02:56 (fifteen years ago)
YOB (and I) will be at Roadburn. That's official. What I can't say is the name of the ultra-cool US doom label that is putting out the YOB vinyl. Please just mentally guess and know that you're right so I don't get in trouble.

I should go make some corrections/additions to this someday.
― Nate Carson, Friday, 1 January 2010 03:08 (fifteen years ago)
Another great one was Soilent Green, Isis, Witch Mountain, YOB. Can't recall the date but it was right after Isis put out SGNL 5 ep.
I will give this band another chance in 2010. I tried listening to each of their Metal Blade albums and was bored horizontal. But I'll give it one more shot.

The new one's the best.
― EZ Snappin, Saturday, 2 January 2010 23:19 (fifteen years ago)
For me Unreal Never Lived and the new one are tied for best. Title track of Catharsis is pretty monumental and emotional though...
― Nate Carson, Sunday, 3 January 2010 01:03 (fifteen years ago)
"The Lie That Is Sin" from the new one (first vid on the YouTube companion thread) is the best thing they ever did, totally blew me away at first listen. Some folks seem to have a problem with the vocals on the new album, but I think they're better than ever. Sure looking forward to that Roadburn show!
― Thijs, Sunday, 3 January 2010 12:12 (fifteen years ago)
just to note that i saw YOB, witch mountain and lesbian last night at a weird vegan punk bar that smells like barbecue sauce (which used to be a nasty orange douche bar with a lamborghini on the roof). fucking crushed, a yob-shaped bootprint throbbing on my tender lobes. plus uta plotkin, witch mountain singer, was so fucking great & inspiring. for the record.

made me think how balkanized the seattle scene is. like zero audience crossover with the garage/punk shows i usually go out for. why is rockers not want to rock?

hi nate
why the fuck does this band never play new york
― kenanpolaris (Whiney G. Weingarten), Saturday, 18 September 2010 19:47 (fourteen years ago)
i heard it's because they hate NY because indie hipsters there would rather go to a festival that encourages bands to play classic albums in full.
― pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Saturday, 18 September 2010 20:16 (fourteen years ago)

the same joke could be used to explain why Yob never come to Glasgow, but i dont think ATP even bothers with Glasgow.
― pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Saturday, 18 September 2010 21:07 (fourteen years ago)
The thought of an ATP being held in Ayr does amuse me.

No one around here likes it but it's weirdly growing on me. Not sure why or how. Those super earnest vocals and spoken bits certainly require some suspension of, err, irony.
― If Assholes Could Fly This Place Would Be An Airport, Wednesday, 15 August 2012 20:54 (thirteen years ago)
His new material at the live shows is really going somewhere. He doesn't even play most of the album songs live anymore. Rapid growth as per usual. Mike throws away better songs than most people will ever write.

Recorded at Gung Ho Studio in Eugene, notorious for its reserve of vintage equipment, alongside longtime collaborator/iconic sound-sage Billy Barnett, and mastered by Brad Boatright (Sleep, Beastmilk, Nails) at Audiosiege Engineering, Clearing The Path To Ascend is undoubtedly the crowning achievement for a band whose journey now nears two decades of creating music as commanding as it is cathartic.
Could be hyperbole but I love the buildup.

I saw Yob last year with one of my best friends, who had a mental breakdown earlier that day and almost missed the show. She started crying during "Our Raw Heart", and then went up to Mike to take a picture with him after and he said "I think you need one of these" and hugged her.
He is such a dope guy.
