more stuff you might like posted on the metal youtube companion thread LJ.
Im sure you wont be the only one who loves Zombi once they hear it. Most wont have heard of it because of the label they're on but im sure loads would love it.
The Steve Moore solo albums and the Majuere album are all in the same vein. The Majeure album was out this year too, hopefully someone will nominate it before it's too late!

Pfunkboy : The Dronelord vs The Girly Metal Daleks (Herman G. Neuname), Thursday, 31 December 2009 20:05 (fifteen years ago)

Bannakumbi, brilliant new salsa act, often doing atypical things with the way they mix different vocal styles together (lots of vocal harmonies, layers of different choruses happening at the same time, rapping, etc.). Also, more acoustic guitar and cuatro than one here's these days in mainstream salsa, I would say. Not too much on youtube, but here is their myspace, which includes "Un Nuevo Dia":

http://www.myspace.com/junitocrespo1

And here's one song I nominated, on youtube (with annoying intro. added by the person who posted it). This one sticks a little closer to a standard salsa sound, but I think it's still pretty inventive and fresh-sounding:

Here's a song (that hasn't been nommed) from an album I didn't nom but Dog Latin did. It's ace! I kinda wish I'd nommed it. Give the album a vote instead!

It is, erm, trumpet-led loop-rock. With loads of layered samples. And it's hella catchy!

Two Tokyo Jihen tracks. The first one is all over the place, in a good way, I think, (pop) art rock (maybe) with some unhinged vocals throughout:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CAZZ6NbDmRs

The second is more of a smooth funky jazzy thing, with a terrific bassline courtesy of the great Seiji Kameda:

I like the stripped down accompaniment here, and I especially like when she soneos at the end, which pretty much makes it. Look! It was on NPR. Cool!

I just like his sound overall and picked this track more as representative of that sound than for its own sake per se.

Havana Salsa Team - Dime

http://mp3.rhapsody.com/havana-salsa-team

This is just a really poppy salsa song, Cuban style, but the chorus that comes in about two thirds of the way through makes it special (to my ears anyway).

Pfunkboy : The Dronelord vs The Girly Metal Daleks (Herman G. Neuname), Thursday, 31 December 2009 22:12 (fifteen years ago)

stuff from albums I nommed:

"Slaughter" from Meshell Ndegeocello's Devil's Halo (a back-to-basics suite about breaking up and drinking away the pain that avoids getting tripped up with confessional lyrics by letting the music do the talking more often than not)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8eODdo_v5kA

"Say Whoa/You Can't Hide From Your Bud" from A-Trak's Fabriclive.45 (very upbeat, kitchen sink-but-coherent house mix that never lets the energy slip)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0T5C-ZiRO54

"Lose Your Way" from Nicolay's City Lights 2: Shibuya (meditative Tokyo-inspired electronic instrumentals, broken up with the occasional vocal by the sweet-voiced Carlitta Durand)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KjXa_Mp86lI

"Player's Ball Freestyle" from Big K.R.I.T.'s The Last King (a fast-moving mixtape with lots of cool layered samples by a Mississippian who can rap his ass off)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i9Tg-yHOAE8

"Nirvana" from Shafiq Husayn's Shafiq En' A-Free-Ka (weird cosmic afro-beat/soul, great "Genius of Love" sample in this track)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xeDoptI1214

"As I" from Geeneus' Volumes: One (funky house that runs the gambit from sweet vocal tracks to tough bangers, includes a very good mix disc in addition to the album)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fCqFP0dTFSQ

"Off the Radar" from Wiley's Race Against Time (having made his pop moves last year, the prissy Brit gets back to showing why he was such a phenomenal rapper in the first place)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WELldmDcwzo

"Ain't Nuttin' Changed" from Blaq Poet's The Blaqprint (DJ Premier-produced NYC trad-rap by an angry middle-aged guy)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lNesrbQ-Bm0

art crut (The Reverend), Thursday, 31 December 2009 22:48 (fifteen years ago)

This thread is already pretty overwhelming (in terms of sheer volume). I am enjoying people's picks in general more than expected. Particularly liked: Gyratory System, Kutiman, Plants vs. Zombies, and maybe Slough Feg. Maybe even Gates of Slumber. I like when that Zu track starts to sound like it's going to turn into "Oye Como Va." Zombi is impressive but probably not the sort of thing I'd listen to much. And that's as far as I've gotten really.

Too soon to have a firm judgment on this one, but so far I basically like Timbalive's From Miami a la Habana quite a bit. A Miami group playing the Cuban popular music form timba (closely related to salsa, but may or may not be considered a distinct genre in its own right), perhaps with some concessions to a U.S. audience. The first track here actually features a bunch of famous Cuban singers a guests. This is a fairly contemporary sound within the overall Afro-Latin family:

http://www.myspace.com/timbalayeband

I'm not really pushing for this hard, but I still think Choco Orta's album, Ahora Mismo..., is pretty good. Just straight-forward salsa standards (including a bolero), but there aren't too many female salsa singers around right now on her level, imo:

no youtube link on this, but it is on hypemachine:

scott miller w/patty griffin -- i'm right here my love

he writes some great melodies, and their harmonies are perfect. it's a sort of deathbed duet, between the dying and someone at the bedside. (yeah i know, not the most uplifiting thing, but in a way it is.)

hellzapoppa (tipsy mothra), Friday, 1 January 2010 05:46 (fifteen years ago)

One more. When this single was releases this past summer, I was pretty sure I was never going to like it. Several months later, it's the only song from Shiina Ringo's latest solo album (which I think tipsy mothra included in his album nominations) that I actually like. It's smooth, jazzy pop with strings. Terrible video (overall):

So please dont post anymore vids here, wait til the voting thread is up and post there.
