I don't think the winning song sounds all that indie.. but to my ears this competition was 1 killer single VS 9 wack singles.

well, it sounds like '90s indie, but it's still by far the most indie thing on the list (in label terms and aesthetically)

Seriously? Back when I worked for the rag, we got umpteen promos for KoL and I couldn't fucking stand them—the epitome of bloodless hipsters wanting to rehabilitate "Southern Rock" for people who didn't listen to and didn't like any rock (indie doesn't count). I'd rather have a by-the-numbers Molly Hatchet album than anything KoL ever did, and to differentiate between early and late seems to me like sifting shit for corn.

Just from kicking around ILX, I know you like a lot more chart pop that I do, but I still can't fathom having any feelings more positive than ennui for KoL.
