love her. No thread on her. Drake talks about her a lot. She pops up on that Young Money "Bedrock" shit, which is a late entry for song of the year for me 2009. Think she's going to be huge?

― some dude, Friday, 1 January 2010 20:34 (sixteen years ago)
When she's good, she's pretty enjoyable, imo.
The Beam Me Up Scotty mixtape is pretty solid, esp. the title track, although that's as much due to the Sasha sample as anything else.

Honestly, I'm not sure how she'll sustain over proper album-length stuff, but as a female Wayne-equivalent for mixtapes and remix purposes, I'm fine with it.
― Alex in Montreal, Friday, 1 January 2010 21:22 (sixteen years ago)
"equivalent" is probably not the right word
― some dude, Friday, 1 January 2010 21:57 (sixteen years ago)
no, it isn't. by a long shot.
i just meant, if she sticks to her female sub-wayne shtick for the next while, i'll be fine with it.

what's the source of the sasha sample?
― Whiney G. Weingarten, Friday, 1 January 2010 22:13 (sixteen years ago)
I have NO IDEA. Been trying to figure this out - Lex told me it was Sasha and the internet seems to confirm this but other than that google is no help whatsoever.
But seriously that "hackle mi body" loop is wondrous.

― k3vin k., Friday, 1 January 2010 22:32 (sixteen years ago)
xp: naw, mine doesn't have any of those
not to say all the other verses are great, but Gudda Gudda's verse completely stalls "Bedrock" in it's tracks
― art crut (The Reverend), Friday, 1 January 2010 22:37 (sixteen years ago)
She blew up a long time ago around here but I guess this is her "base" - she's definitely about to takover the pop world in 2010 and I'm excited for that she's awesome. Love her mixtapes but she's definitely improving, all of her recent guest spots steal the show. Excited to hear the "up owt my face" remix with Mimi
― The Brainwasher, Friday, 1 January 2010 23:48 (sixteen years ago)
i enjoy her verses - i mean she is totally a wayne clone right down to sports references and stuff, but she can flow really well & i def enjoy her crazy wacko 98 different voices a verse schtick
idk if she's gonna blow up per se but "i get crazy" is pretty cool. i could see her having a real hit next year, i think being part of young money is a good look for her because she's so much better than all those dudes. def more than a token chick thing
i like her schtick on this

i <3 nicki. she's obviously v wayne-influenced but i think she's a lot more than just a wayne clone...this is what i wrote on the jukebox a while back:
I love her creative wordplay and commitment to quotability, and the fact that she’s raunchy but too surrealist and weird to box herself into just smutty ho-rap. Really versatile, too: she can handle everything from “Beam Me Up Scotty”, which wouldn’t sound out of place in a dancehall mix, to her touchingly vulnerable verse on the “Best I Ever Had” remix (”It’s so amazing…I figured out this world is ours for the taking”).
i'd add that she seems to have really strong musical instincts - she adapts herself to different beats really well. and she's improving all the time - as great as "beam me up scotty" was this time last year, i couldn't have imagined her pulling something like the "sweet dreams" remix off then.
i like her various voices - rev said elsewhere that it sometimes grates when there's a visual accompaniment b/c she often pulls stupid faces to go with them, she needs to cut that out. but they usually serve her well - like on "itty bitty piggy", when she cranks up the intensity and threatening vibe on that "i'm the wolf, where is little red riding hood" line, and on "saxon" when she bends her voice to the dubstep beat (much better than snoop or eve's excursions into dubstep imo).
i'm looking forward to her album dropping - tinged with a bit of trepidation, because her wacky instincts need to be balanced just right not to grate. and i wouldn't exactly mind if she dropped the babytalk either.

yeah, i dunno, some of my favorite rappers ever are of the 'wacky'/'animated' variety, but i don't feel like she really owns her schtick or pulls it off that well -- seeing her in the 5 Star video (anyone have the hilarious gif from that that they can post btw?) is like watching someone from a terrible sketch comedy troupe or something, like she's being funny on purpose but i'm still laughing at her more than with her.

i like "hiss" a lot in general. annoying but typical that it's being reported as a diss track when it's pretty much meg's repudiation of all the heinous vitriol she received during the whole shooting/trial saga, the handful of lines suggesting specific 'critics' aside. of course mrs. goofy's embarrassing/pathetic behavior has now made it a 'nicki minaj diss' in the public eye but oh well, what probably would have just been a strong statement track (like previous single "cobra") is now on its way to becoming an actual hit from the looks of it

the entirety of the energy behind my investment in the whole thing stems from confusion. in order to be outraged, i think a general understanding of the situation is a prerequisite, which excludes me.
kind of funny in a nihilistic way too? also feeds my brain's ideas about the nonexistence of free will and everything being scripted. ultimately i find it very discouraging for the human spirit, if such a thing exists in the first place. no outrage here whatsoever.

https://www.theguardian.com/music/2024/feb/07/apple-download-chart-battleground-pop-politics-megan-thee-stallion-nicki-minaj
Over 20 years after its launch, Apple’s online music store has found a surprising new life – as a battleground for online turf wars. Last week, at least five songs rose to the upper reaches of the Apple Music (formerly iTunes) download charts, powered by different internet factions. Nicki Minaj and Megan Thee Stallion fans waged war against each other as foot soldiers in the rappers’ feud; Britney Spears fans mass-bought the singer’s years-old songs Liar and Selfish as a way to troll her ex-boyfriend, Justin Timberlake, who released a song also called Selfish last month; and rightwing media influencer Ben Shapiro encouraged his fans to drive Facts, his new rap song with Canadian former wrestler Tom MacDonald, up the charts. Far from a measure of objective popularity, the chart reflected political biases, years-old feuds and outright pettiness.Fans mobilising to push certain albums or songs up the Apple Music download charts is nothing new – in 2018, a group of Mariah Carey fans mass-bought the singer’s 2001 flop Glitter as part of a campaign called #JusticeForGlitter. But musician and writer Jaime Brooks says that the cratering of the digital download market in recent years – around 152m digital songs were sold in the US in 2022, less than half of 2018’s 412m – has allowed campaigns that are smaller and far less coordinated than #JusticeForGlitter to disproportionately affect the charts. “I don’t think anybody’s actually using their phones and iTunes to listen to files any more, except people who have not upgraded their setup since 2012 – there are a lot of people like that in America, but not enough to sustain these huge numbers,” she says. “This [downloading] is a purely performative gesture – it only ever happens as a result of some kind of factional culture war that somebody has the money and inclination to try to represent on the charts.”
