...because otherwise I'll probably miss dozens of things being reissued.

F.J. McMahon "Spirit of the Golden Juice" reissue is out on Rev-Ola. It's really good loner folkness. Ian knows it.

from Lion Productions:

Heaven & Earth "Refuge" femme vocal folk/psych LP on the Ovation label, from master-tapes, with bonus—CD and LP

no release day specified, but this is surely promising.

the self-titled debut by '80s power-pop group Green (listed on that Lion Productions page) is also one to seek out.

yayyy heaven & earth reissue!!

mr bollock apple (electricsound), Thursday, 7 January 2010 02:01 (fifteen years ago)

nice to see the search party getting a legit re too

mr bollock apple (electricsound), Thursday, 7 January 2010 02:02 (fifteen years ago)

i thought the void records search party reissue was legit. oh well.

also interesting stuff on guerssen, though i'm not sure if these came out earlier on vinyl and the CDs are just coming out now - Schibbinz (cool, mellow garage folk-rock) and William Nowik "Pan Symphony in E Minor" (supposedly proggy/psychy super rarity, samples sound good).

and isolation ward anthology on LTM! samples of that sound pretty awesome too, dark postpunk with female vocals.

http://www.lastdaysofmanonearth.com/blog/?p=1156

dan selzer, Tuesday, 9 February 2010 23:18 (fifteen years ago)

"She's Got Medals" as in Bowie's first album "She's Got Medals"? Of all the songs to pick.

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 9 February 2010 23:29 (fifteen years ago)

Yeah. Didn't even notice that at first. Sounds like a glam/pre-punk via new wave take on it.

dan selzer, Wednesday, 10 February 2010 01:03 (fifteen years ago)

the american version of Ha Ha Ha era Ultravox?

dan selzer, Wednesday, 10 February 2010 01:05 (fifteen years ago)

Oh wow, I never heard Raymilland before. Totally buying that.

saw this in other music's update, with typically bullshit review:

THE BEAUTIFUL LOSERS Nobody Knows the Heaven (Lion Productions)

label says:

To set the scene: it’s 1974, it’s Paris, two young guys in their bed-sit (one of whom is French music maven/famous producer Jay Alanski) are dreaming of counter-culture, and their internal versions of California and New York. The result is this album, a child begotten of Marc Bolan, Baudelaire, and Lautréamont; a fascinating record, subtle and engaging as it is scarce; the re-creation of a parallel pop universe which one Michael Moorcock wouldn’t have renounced. Somehow, the duo get their record out into the world on Monde Melody’s one-off "Silk" imprint (a tribute to Marc Bolan). And what twisted songs (in English) they managed to squeeze into a fifty-minute slab of vinyl. The music drips with deep nostalgia for the decadent "beautiful people" who lived and breathed and then found a home in the songs of Lou Reed and Leonard Cohen, pervaded throughout with a kind of psychedelic sadness. All of this is expressed by means of long jagged acid guitar runs (or in acoustic strums) supported by Moroccan percussion (bongos?) and heavy bass lines from Christophe J. A post-quaalude album, as band leader Jay Alanski has said. If the LP had been released in 1971, everyone would point to T-Rex as an influence, and call it "glam folk"; fast forward to today and it’s hard not to think "loner," and draw comparisons with the music of Devendra Banhart, albeit recorded 35 years ago! We’re now several decades further on in the world’s slow self-destruction, but this sole recording by the Beautiful Losers has lost nothing of its freshness and superb arrogance. Blessed be the listener who is going to discover such a hidden treasure!

Endtables reissue on drag city is great! also, really digging the reissue of rarepsychmonster *never mind* by damin eih, a.l.k. and brother clark on nero's neptune. gottpunch you need that if you don't have it already. sourced from vinyl but sounds awesome. there was a vinyl reissue but i don't think it sounded anywhere near as good. if i'm remembering correctly.

Bill Withers - 'Justments (1974) [Feb 16]

It's about time, a true soul classic nearly as great as his first two. Available now at Dusty Groove.

Fastnbulbous, Thursday, 11 February 2010 17:26 (fifteen years ago)

Wait, Endtables? The Endtables that did Process Of Elimination?

Colonel Poo, Thursday, 11 February 2010 17:31 (fifteen years ago)

yup. from louisville. all their studio stuff from 1979 - which isn't much, 7 songs - and six live tracks. the live stuff is great.

scott seward, Thursday, 11 February 2010 17:35 (fifteen years ago)

live stuff also from 1979.

scott seward, Thursday, 11 February 2010 17:36 (fifteen years ago)

Wow I'll be getting that one then. Their singles go for stupid money

Colonel Poo, Thursday, 11 February 2010 17:38 (fifteen years ago)

just wanna thank chuck again for sending me that X reissue on aztec! always wanted to hear them. wowee zowee do i love this thing! "suck suck" is just sooooo amazing.

(reissue of their first album and single. came out in 2008, so doesn't really belong here.)

scott seward, Thursday, 11 February 2010 17:38 (fifteen years ago)

i think it might come with a dvd too? the endtables thing. of live footage. i just got a promo of the cd.

still might enjoy that grong grong reissue best this year though. so great. and the dvd with that is just completely amazing. just the fact that a band not around that long would amass so much footage in 1983 and 1984...and its all so awesome too!

scott seward, Thursday, 11 February 2010 17:42 (fifteen years ago)

What's with Drag City rescuing all these bands from obscurity and not reissuing the Slovenly catalogue? I want Thinking of Empire on CD, now!

really digging the reissue of rarepsychmonster *never mind* by damin eih, a.l.k. and brother clark on nero's neptune. gottpunch you need that if you don't have it already.

oh hell yes, i do! i've had mp3s of it for a while - the orange doubledome reissue was v. expensive - so i'll have to find me a copy, i LOOOOOVE that record.

international slackness (GOTT PUNCH II HAWKWINDZ), Friday, 12 February 2010 03:58 (fifteen years ago)

It came out in '09, but I'm not sure it was mentioned in the other thread — Universal finally did a Jorge Ben box, Salve Jorge!, with all of his Philips albums ('63-'75) and two discs of rarities. It's really expensive and based on what I've heard the mastering seems kinda squashed. A pity.

And just so you know, WITCH stands for : We Intend To Cause Havoc.

scott seward, Wednesday, 17 February 2010 17:34 (fifteen years ago)

Yeah, those are both great albums. And now that they're on CD ($16) instead of LP ($40+) I'll probably actually buy the suckers.

big fan of the Amanaz rekkerd. the Witch LP (there's one more besides lazy bones, at least) didn't quite do it for me.
the shadoks LPs I want more are KAMIJO "Martha" and the Fingletoad, Strange & Siho double LP.

If any of you like techno at all, the Anthony "Shake" Shakir 3CD Frictionalism comp on Rush Hour is really, really good. Covers '90s through now, loads of variety, totally enjoyable.

This was mentioned in passing on some other thread but figured I'd post here as it's really blown me away. Like an alternate history if Cabaret Voltaire, the Human League, Soft Cell and others had never hit the big time in the '80s, and were instead doomed to record on four-tracks and release their classics unheard. Or at least that's how I romanticize it in my head...

also grinding my teeth waiting for the raymilland reissue to show up in the mail.

PANZER DIVISION DEVO (GOTT PUNCH II HAWKWINDZ), Monday, 22 February 2010 14:49 (fifteen years ago)

I like the Schibbinz album that Guerssen (and Anthology) put out. Really good teenage garage folk-rock.

timellison, Tuesday, 23 February 2010 03:02 (fifteen years ago)

hay tim! yeah, i dug that one, too. really charming and kinda sweet.

also got the raymilland five minutes after i posted about it this morning. love it.

A lot of minimal wave stuff has come to the fore in recent years through blogs like Mutant Sounds, though it is nice to have a comp like that to provide a more formal entry into the field.

Columbus Discount has reissued a select compilation of early Nudge Squidfish stuff. It was originally the first Old Age/No Age release, I think. Want! In fact, I thought I already ordered it, but I clearly didn't finish the job, cause there's been no sign of it. Need to check paypal logs...

After spending some time comparing it to vinyl, I'm really impressed by the (download only, via facebook) Rat At Rat R remaster of their first album that just came out.

Yeah I was going to say, didn't Souvlaki and Just For A Day come out a few years ago with an extra disc?

The Railway Children - Recurrence 88 Aug 31
The Railway Children - A Native Place 90 Aug 31

I kept confusing them in my memory with The Rain Parade. I may have heard some during college, but not sure. Reviews of these albums are extremely dismissive in Allmusic and Trouser Press. The gist is, pretty, jangly music influenced by The Smiths and Aztec Camera, but lacking decent songs, hooks, personality. Anyone have a different take on that?

Fastnbulbous, Thursday, 26 August 2010 16:24 (fifteen years ago)

Bruce Springsteen - The Promise: The Darkness On The Edge of Town Story [3CD, 3Blu-ray] Nov 16

"Darkness was my 'samurai' record," Springsteen writes, "stripped to the frame and ready to rumble.” But the music that got left behind was substantial.

This extraordinary deluxe package comprises nearly six hours of film and more than two hours of audio across 3 CDs and 3 DVDs. It comes with an 80-page notebook containing facsimiles from Springsteen's original notebooks from the recording sessions, which include alternate lyrics, song ideas, recording details, and personal notes in addition to a new essay by Springsteen on the album and never-before-seen photographs.

The Deluxe Package also features The Promise: The Making of 'Darkness on the Edge of Town,' a documentary directed by Grammy- and Emmy-winning filmmaker Thom Zimny. The ninety-minute film combines never-before-seen footage of Springsteen and the E Street Band shot between 1976 and 1978, including home rehearsals and studio sessions with new interviews with Springsteen, E Street Band members, manager Jon Landau, former-manager Mike Appel, and others closely involved in the making of the record.

In addition, the set features more than four hours of live concert film from the Thrill Hill Vault, including the bootleg house cut (the footage that appeared on-screen at the concert) from a 1978 Houston show, and a 2009 performance of Darkness on the Edge of Town in its entirety from Asbury Park. The special performance in Asbury Park was shot in HD without an audience and successfully recreates the stark atmosphere of the original album.

The Deluxe Package also includes Darkness on the Edge of Town, digitally remastered for the first time, as well as the 2 CD set The Promise: The Lost Sessions from Darkness On The Edge Of Town. The two discs contain a total of 21 previously-unreleased songs from the 'Darkness' recording sessions, songs that, as Springsteen writes, "perhaps could have/should have been released after Born To Run and before the collection of songs that Darkness on the Edge of Town became." Highlights include the extraordinary rock version of "Racing in the Street," the never-before-released original recordings of "Because the Night," "Fire," and "Rendezvous," the supreme pop opus "Someday (We'll Be Together)," the hilarious "Ain't Good Enough for You," the superb soul-based vocal performance on "The Broken Hearted," the utterly haunting "Breakaway," and the now finally released, fully orchestrated masterpiece and title song, "The Promise." All 21 songs have been mixed by Springsteen's long-time collaborator, Bob Clearmountain. According to long-time manager/producer Jon Landau, "There isn't a weak card in this deck. The Promise is simply a great listening experience."

looks great, annoying that it'll probably be $40, since it's a rhino handmade deal.

Why not just release that separately? This kind of stuff bugs the shit out of me.

Small Town Romance is awesome. Probably my favorite post-Pours Down Like Silver Thompson thing.

yeah, that is a great record. glad the version of "i'm a dreamer" is on this -- totally stunning, maybe the best ever linda vocal.
funny that they're still refusing to put out the original "rafferty" version of shoot out the lights. richard must really dislike it.

Got the bowie vinyl box here. Beautiful beautiful set and the Nassau show is spectacular. Probably not worth the money for the uber set though unless money's no object, the CD set has the majority of the content.

The three new John Lennon remasters i've heard recently have sounded good too, nice packaging on those.

The Fall - Live At The Witch Trials [2CD] Oct 12

Really? There's already a 2CD version; maybe this is just a repressing? Wonderful & Frightening World is coming in a 4-disc version from Beggars on Oct 25, though, the first new version since the '80s CD (which always sounded pretty murky and could definitely use an upgrade).

Wait a FOUR disc version? What the hell.

hard to trust the dude quoted on the label's website for that reissue.

Thin Lizzy [2CD]
Thin Lizzy - Shades Of A Blue Orphanage [2CD]
Thin Lizzy - Vagabonds Of The Western World [2CD]

Looks like these came out, at least in the UK, on the 11th. I've been looking for the double of Vagabonds since it was supposedly released in dbl deluxe version in Japan, but had no luck finding it. Freakin' love that album.

two weeks pass...

Turns out Thin Lizzy was delayed again until Nov 16.

The Church - Seance 84 [2CD] Nov 16
The Church - Heyday 86 [2CD] Nov 16

The Ted Lucas LP reissued on Yoga is legit, and great.

Those Church reissues don't have anything that hasn't already appeared before, right?

Gerald McBoing-Boing, Friday, 29 October 2010 19:44 (fourteen years ago)

If they're the ones on Second Motion, no. They're the same as the Aussie reissues, just much cheaper since they're not imported.

Ooooh want the Ted Lucas!

one month passes...

Salvo are saying in their newsletter that they will continue releasing the ZTT catalogue in 2011.
But exactly how much is there left to reissue? The ZTT catalogue isn't

Sure, there is the complete Art Of Noise, out of which only the debut album is available at all right now. There are also the sophomore slumps by Frankie Goes To Hollywood and Propaganda, if anyone is interested in them. But is there anything else at all?

for a starters : Nasty Rox Inc. cd edition.

and i know they found the masters, and lots of extras to make a boxset.

however, the concern is that beyond me, there is no demand for such an item

Also, I'd love to get the Anne Pigalle album in remastered form.

The Light in the Attic re-issue of Jim Sullivan's "U.F.O." is really awesome, with an incredible and haunting booklet that discusses his sad disappearance.

Actually still hoping for Art Of Noise. Having at least their first two albums released with bonus 12" singles and all would be really great. The second album is also currently not available from what I know.

there are troubles with the China records era of the Art of Noise material.
lost master tapes and suchlike, so the chances of proper re-releases of that stuff is somewhat unlikely.

Personally I think 2010 has been a really excellent year for the Cherry Red family. Not that they were bad before that either, but things really took off this year. Highlighs include "The Dollar Album" by Dollar, "Listen" by A Flock of Seagulls", Tony Banks' "A Curious Feeling", the first two albums by Five Star and a big part of Camel's back catalogue.

And gotta add Salvo's fine take on Madness' 80s catalogue as well.
