"White Rabbit," along with "Purple Haze" and "Get Together," is the cliche, go-to song for filmmakers to signify OH HAI ITS THE 60S.

"Hurdy Gurdy Man" OTOH, was used for this:

Donovan FTW.

hurdy gurdy man for the tremolo

and the mind-bending butthole surfers version

Karen Tregaskin, Thursday, 7 January 2010 22:59 (sixteen years ago)

lol zodiac vs the game fite

"hurdy gurdy man" sounds fresher today than "white rabbit" for some reason. both awesome songs, though.. don't know what to vote for

guammls (QE II), Thursday, 7 January 2010 23:04 (sixteen years ago)

hurdy gurdy man was also basically the test run for led zeppelin (+allan holdsworth!)

jealous ones sb (M@tt He1ges0n), Thursday, 7 January 2010 23:06 (sixteen years ago)

"Hurdy Gurdy Man" - it's creepier. And I despise Jefferson Airplane.

EZ Snappin, Thursday, 7 January 2010 23:08 (sixteen years ago)

"White Rabbit" was, I think, the first 45 I ever owned, so it gets my sentimental vote.

Just got the new deluxe version of The Monkees' Pisces, Aquarius... for Christmas and was struck by how much the vibe of "Daily Nightly" sounds like "White Rabbit."

yeah didn't one of the monkeys own the first moog or something like that?

This is an inspired poll. Thanks, Eazy! I would always jump to the conclusion that Grace Slick >>>>>>>> Donovan, but I actually love Hurdy Gurdy Man and would often rather hear it than the splendid White Rabbit.

Y'all know that it's John Bonham on drums on Hurdy Gurdy right?

Nate Carson, Thursday, 7 January 2010 23:57 (sixteen years ago)

xpost - Matt it's Alan Parker, not Allan Holdsworth.

And fwiw, I saw Holdsworth with Terry Bozzio, Tony Levin, and Pat Mastelotto last week. Fucking awful.

Nate Carson, Thursday, 7 January 2010 23:59 (sixteen years ago)

So I just listened to both songs. White Rabbit, despite being terribly overplayed and misused for decades, just kills. I vote White Rabbit.

Not Bonham either, it's Clem Cattini, see link in fourth post. Only member of Zeppelin was John Paul Jones. By that right you could call "To Sir With Love" test run for Zeppelin.

HGM in Zodiac was probably the best use of a song in a movie in the last 10 years afaic, also when I think of Donovan I think of the Lost City of Atlanta ep of Futurama and it makes me giggle.

Astronaut Mike Dexter (Jimmy The Mod Awaits The Return Of His Beloved), Friday, 8 January 2010 01:41 (sixteen years ago)

Interesting:

"Highlights include the swinging "The Fat Angel", which (Donovan's book confirms) was written for "Mama" Cass Elliott of The Mamas & the Papas. The song is also notable for name checking the cult San Francisco acid rock band Jefferson Airplane, well before they became known internationally and before Grace Slick joined."

I'm going through his catalog again at the moment, but I'm sort of amazed by how much I like Hurdy Gurdy Man and Season of the Witch, and how little I like most of his other stuff.

"Not Bonham either, it's Clem Cattini,"

Thanks for setting me straight. According to wiki, Clem was asked to join Zeppelin on 2 separate occasions. So I can see why this myth has persisted.

white rabbit is better than donoven's original, but the butthole surfers version is betthr than both.

also, it's like the perfect song for them to cover.fits them like a glove

Zeno, Thursday, 14 January 2010 00:12 (fifteen years ago)

I pick "Crimson and Clover".

Oh, I dunno. Think "White Rabbit", but only just. Suspect I might pick both played at the same time over either, the precious, enunciated vocals of "White Rabbit" submerged in the murk of "Hurdy Gurdy Man".
