Hooray! Haven't really cared for their last three but I think I will always be hopeful that they can make me love them again.

i doubt it

I am cipating this one.
― Leee, Saturday, 9 January 2010 20:38 (fifteen years ago)
Wow, I forgot Quaristice even existed. I kinda lost interest after Confield.
― neither good nor bad, just a kid like you (unperson), Saturday, 9 January 2010 21:06 (fifteen years ago)
Untilted is a contender for my favorite Autechre album, period! I've loved almost every step of their career, but Quaristice felt a bit too..hmm..uneven to me. It was good, but I didn't care much for the leftovers feel of it. Untilted, though, is endlessly replayable and I for one don't really want them to 'go back' to any previous sound.
― abcfsk, Saturday, 9 January 2010 21:35 (fifteen years ago)
I expect they will continue to be great; looking forward to this!
― Monophonic Spree (Paul in Santa Cruz), Sunday, 10 January 2010 06:13 (fifteen years ago)
I for one don't really want them to 'go back' to any previous sound.
Oh I don't want them to go back. I just hope they go in a direction that interests me again, whatever that might be.
― CATBEAST 7777 (ledge), Sunday, 10 January 2010 11:41 (fifteen years ago)
I'm not casting aspersions on anyone in particular, but I know personally I didn't get into Untilted or Quaristice at first because I wasn't willing to invest any time in getting to know them. So they sounded like lame versions of Autechre songs I'd already heard. They're not. Quaristice is uneven, yeah, but both of those albums have killer killer tracks.
― counter-clockwise (lukas), Sunday, 10 January 2010 12:23 (fifteen years ago)
In all seriousness, I recognize that some people can process stuff faster than I can. (One of the reasons I'm not a critic.) Just a personal report.
― counter-clockwise (lukas), Sunday, 10 January 2010 12:54 (fifteen years ago)
I think that's a fair point. I definitely put a lot of unrewarded effort into Draft 7.30, perhaps that unfairly reflected onto how I dealt with Untilted. And a big problem with Quaristice was, double albums can be hard at the best of times, and what with the alternate versions LP and EPs - it was just too much! I should go back and reconsider. I probably say that on all ae threads...

I like Quaristice a lot.
― twice boiled cabbage is death, Sunday, 10 January 2010 14:57 (fifteen years ago)
Both Untilted and Draft 7.30 is really funky, playful albums, to a much larger degree than any of their other stuff. Autechre jamming.
― abcfsk, Sunday, 10 January 2010 18:21 (fifteen years ago)

Are 24 bit wav files the SACD of the online world?
Interesting to see the ressurrected TDR doing graphic design duties, but it looks kind of boring and a definite departure from the previous style.

I just heard a rumor that one of the guys in Autechre is autistic and makes all the raw material, and the other guy just edits it into something presentable. autistic + tech = Autechre?
― p@@@nts, Monday, 22 February 2010 18:59 (fifteen years ago)
I heard that half of Autechre is an automobile and the other half is a man who edits automobile noises into musical structures

― nakhchivan, Tuesday, 23 February 2010 15:26 (fifteen years ago)
At the risk of jumping the gun... a few tracks in and this is really sounding like the ever-anticipated or feared but never expected "return". pt2ph8 is well Amber.
― take me to your lemur (ledge), Tuesday, 23 February 2010 15:28 (fifteen years ago)
nice, special offer on their back catalogue as well: http://bleep.com/index.php?page=artist_details&artistid=71
― StanM, Tuesday, 23 February 2010 15:42 (fifteen years ago)
xp I think that's definitely what they *wanted* it to be, but I'm not sure how successful it is. There's not much substance to a lot of it and it remains quite vapidly pretty throughout.
"Know(1)" is definitely the highlight for me.
― Turangalila, Tuesday, 23 February 2010 16:13 (fifteen years ago)
Meh, I'd love to preorder a physical copy, but I've had some shipping issues from the bleep store lately. I had an order that I made around Jan 1 that never arrived, and they shipped it again around the end of January and I still haven't seen it.
Gripes aside, those audio samples sound great.
― mh, Tuesday, 23 February 2010 16:24 (fifteen years ago)
chimes all the way through this thing.
― take me to your lemur (ledge), Tuesday, 23 February 2010 16:34 (fifteen years ago)
yeah so i did jump the gun; still trying to tease some feelings out of this but overall it feels much more like late period ae - less choons, more sound design/'tone poems'. but not as epic as confield.
also, via warp: "12-hour Radio Broadcast from Autechre.ws Tuesday 2nd March: 6PM - 6AM GMT. This will be epic."
― take me to your lemur (ledge), Tuesday, 2 March 2010 12:53 (fifteen years ago)
This sounds nothing like late period ae.. it's a total change from the last four albums, and definitely ALL about choons.
― abcfsk, Tuesday, 2 March 2010 14:52 (fifteen years ago)

thanks for posting the radio show, this is great.
oversteps hasn't really clicked with me yet, and i'm def no hater of later ae (confield on i suppose), but hearing them play this kind of stuff really makes me wish they'd give some danceable beats a shot again one of these days. been rockin that old lego feet thing lately and there's some fuckin jams on there.

i think peel 2 is the one i really liked, i should dig it up and see if i'm still feeling it.
it feels weird to listen to autechre in 2010, they seem so dated and yet still so futuristic at the same time.
― rinse the lemonade (Jordan), Tuesday, 30 March 2010 20:38 (fifteen years ago)
the peel sessions are both excellent
― nakhchivan, Tuesday, 30 March 2010 20:40 (fifteen years ago)
I'm with you ledge on doubting this record but I'm only 2 odd listens in. I think I might be standing by my initial reaction which was this is more of a pure atmospheres album than a pure moods album.
When I look back on Tri-Repetae++ the only tracks I listen to are #2 and #3 because those are the ones with the most endearing emotion in the industrial sounds
― CaptainLorax, Tuesday, 30 March 2010 22:13 (fifteen years ago)
I enjoy this album but I'm not ready to rep for it. This coming from someone that stood up for fucking Medulla. I'll check back in in four weeks.

I saw them in Vienna, at the Flex which is a renowned dance club with an incredible sound system. Russell Haswell came on first and did ten minutes of white noise. Ae were as danceable as I've ever seen them. I wouldn't call it funky exactly, but it was jittery and jumpy mixed in with the expected harshness. I dunno, this isn't usually my area of interest but I found it unexpectedly listenable.
― anagram, Monday, 5 April 2010 12:02 (fifteen years ago)
O TANNENBAUMO TANNENBAUMHOW MUCH DO YOU ROCK THE HOUSE
<3
― I don't need a bonghit. (ctrl-s), Monday, 5 April 2010 19:26 (fifteen years ago)
Thank you, anagram. That sounds great, and completely unlike what my friend saw on March 12 (? - approx.) in Birmingham. From my friend's email:
Still feeling completely brain damaged after standing directly in front of the speakers during this for 80 minutes a few nights ago. Not such a wise idea in retrospect.
("this" = https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_iEv9d4PrT8)
The sound was seriously bad, so muddy...bass was just utterly fuck off loud the whole time but the set was pretty much just one completely monolithic, grey arhythmic thud that had no real transitions or changes, no melodic parts, depth or feeling at all particularly. Purportedly the very rough, distorted and shitty mix is deliberate to prevent taping (*?!) The only reason I'd like to hear a recording now is so I can hear what I couldn't at the gig! One great thing about Autechre of course is that it's never a wise idea to have any preconceptions about them, but I do think that aiming for pure physicality of sound really sold themselves short. It's difficult to explain how perverse I thought it was at the time.

actually i changed my mind, apart from known(1) this is starting to sound pretty meh to me
― sonderangerbot, Friday, 9 April 2010 16:08 (fifteen years ago)
kinda ambivalent towards this album. sometimes it sounds lovely, and then at other times really dull. keep returning to it, out of some notion that it will somehow 'click' and reveal a kind of genius, but that's unrealistic. pt2ph8 is nice enough, and ilanders has got that slow, twisted churn. the production seems pretty novel for an autechre album (big, spacious, polished). getting a lot of polished stone and glass surfaces from it
― Palpatean Mists (Lowell N. Behold'n), Friday, 9 April 2010 16:22 (fifteen years ago)
this has grown on me some, but i think it's a little too noodly. not much to really grab hold of. it sounds pretty fucking rad though. favorites are "see on see" and "yuop" right now.
i get some similar vibes from dopplereffekt - calabi yau space. might like that album more.
― jerk orbison (another al3x), Tuesday, 27 April 2010 04:41 (fifteen years ago)
I can never tell if it's my imagination, but depending on where my head is positioned or listening to headphones, I'm certain they're doing some pretty insane stuff with surround sound, or whatever it's called these days.
― village idiot (dog latin), Tuesday, 27 April 2010 10:29 (fifteen years ago)
the whole album (Oversteps) sounds to me like what the soundtrack to a re-make of Westworld should sound like.

― original bgm, Wednesday, 15 September 2010 15:53 (fifteen years ago)
you should, because it's the best thing they've done since EP7.
I like the idea of these alternate albums. it does totally remind me of the dub tradition and the way you might get one side and then a dub side.
― village idiot (dog latin), Wednesday, 15 September 2010 16:22 (fifteen years ago)
yeah, I definitely will. I always seem to be running a few releases behind with autechre because I'm typically unsure about how I feel about a new one until I've spent some time with it.
but move of ten really clicked right off. but then I tend to find their EPs more digestible in general.
― original bgm, Wednesday, 15 September 2010 17:19 (fifteen years ago)
