Just finally getting it going here...

Ned Raggett, Monday, 11 January 2010 02:37 (fifteen years ago)

I've lately sort of returned to this genre after many years away from it, occupied with other things. In the last two weeks I bought 09 albums from White Rainbow, Emeralds, and Mountains, along with Klaus Shulze's first album and a few other things along those lines. I feel born again.

scott pgwp (pgwp), Monday, 11 January 2010 03:22 (fifteen years ago)

A healthy start. Anything Adam Forkner does always turns out well.

Ned Raggett, Monday, 11 January 2010 03:33 (fifteen years ago)

Feelin Pumice.. All of it

"I get through more mojitos.." (bear, bear, bear), Monday, 11 January 2010 06:48 (fifteen years ago)

yeah I bought that '09 White Rainbow record in Arcata right after xmas and listened to it on the impossibly gorgeous drive up the coast and through the forest to Grant's Pass. it fit right in.

The CD that accompanies the (fantastic) new book by Graham Lambkin is off to a promising start.. we're at about a minute and a half in and it's all been droning choir so far. loving t.

Joint Custody (ian), Monday, 11 January 2010 07:27 (fifteen years ago)

the entire cd is a loop of the droning choir. it's very soothing and endlessly listenable. the track is only fifteen minutes long. put it twice on each side of a 60 minute cassette and set it to auto-flip.

Joint Custody (ian), Monday, 11 January 2010 07:58 (fifteen years ago)

Really enjoying the Sundog Peacehouse tape on Digitalis. All of which is available free on their website: http://sundogpeacehouse.com/music/

Blissout drones of the highest order.

From the label: "Sundog Peacehouse are Chris Mucci, Sal Farina and Austin Redwood and will soon be taking over their native Pittsburgh by lulling everyone into a codeine coma. Shimmering walls of heavily-processed vocals, guitars and samples ease you down into emerald green pools of total bliss. Pure waves of spiralling sonics drench you and hold you close. there is something so unbelievably comforting about this music"

Barnaby, Hardly, Monday, 11 January 2010 11:57 (fifteen years ago)

In the last two weeks I bought 09 albums from White Rainbow, Emeralds, and Mountains

I picked up the Emeralds one (which is predictably awesome). Still need to get White Rainbow into my hands, been anticipating that one for a while... not sure how I missed it last year.

mixture of excitement/sadness for Jack Rose's upcoming Thrill Jockey record ...

tylerw, Monday, 11 January 2010 16:25 (fifteen years ago)

jack's gonna be like tupac.

scott seward, Monday, 11 January 2010 17:16 (fifteen years ago)

mentioned it on the noise threead, the new (last) yellow swans album is a pothead's delight.

scott seward, Monday, 11 January 2010 17:20 (fifteen years ago)

and more psych/drone/freak than noise anyway.

scott seward, Monday, 11 January 2010 17:21 (fifteen years ago)

Time-Lag's reish of the Stephen David Heitkotter album is going to blow away a good chunk of new releases this year..

ramadaan muhammad asalaamica rasoul allah supana watallah (jk), Monday, 11 January 2010 17:32 (fifteen years ago)

I tuned out of MV/EE for a while, but it looks like this Willie Lane dude plays with them on occasion, this 7" on Cord-Art is in a similar vein as the more simple, cosmic-sounding COM releases. and i thought i recognised the name, and then I remember it's cause he got a shout in the the latest Graham Lambkin CD. not the one with the book, which is rather hypnotic, yes.

gnarly sceptre, Monday, 11 January 2010 19:27 (fifteen years ago)

gnarly sceptre, Monday, 11 January 2010 19:38 (fifteen years ago)

i'm looking forward to the heitkotter reissue, it's an interesting record to say the least

the good songs on God Is Saying This to You (My Sympathy, My Best Friends) are great, but I think constant hitmaker is easier to listen to all the way through. I think he's got more stuff than that but I haven't heard it.

just have a feeling that people will be clamoring to put out any/all unreleased/live/etc stuff. cuz that's what happens.

scott seward, Wednesday, 13 January 2010 04:22 (fifteen years ago)

when i go, there's gonna be A LOT of unreleased material -- talking about shopping lists, unfinished marketing reports, rare e-vites ... the archives, you know?

tylerw, Wednesday, 13 January 2010 04:25 (fifteen years ago)

I just spent like 15 seconds looking for the second disc of the new Skullflower album to put back in its case, before I realised it was still playing. I think this is a compliment. It is totally consuming and blown out. It just finished now and I feel altered

i swear on my life i feel so powerfull (musically) (DJ Mencap), Sunday, 17 January 2010 13:07 (fifteen years ago)

Am loving the White Rainbow record. The more ambient stretches are beautiful, something about it kind of makes me think of a synthier FSA or something. Do I need to go and check out Yume Bitsu?

We should have called Suzie and Bobby (NickB), Saturday, 23 January 2010 21:58 (fifteen years ago)

i bought a yume bitsu album once! i think it was even a double album. didn't like it much.

scott seward, Saturday, 23 January 2010 22:03 (fifteen years ago)

Anyone heard the new Major Stars yet?

Pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Saturday, 23 January 2010 22:04 (fifteen years ago)

Not yet. they're playing a show in brooklyn real soon though. I think they're still got whatshername singing for them?

Joint Custody (ian), Sunday, 24 January 2010 05:43 (fifteen years ago)

yeah she's hot

need to hear the new one. rapidshare doesn't cooperate

rizzx, Sunday, 24 January 2010 16:12 (fifteen years ago)

I spoke with Sadhu Sadhu's Johnny Miller, a few days ago. Was part of an awesome show with Plastic Crimewave Sound, Dark Fog, and assorted others. He promised an LP, this year. His solo record is pretty fantastic, too. Anybody else familiar with this guy (also of Cloud Temple)?

winnebago taco, Sunday, 24 January 2010 18:31 (fifteen years ago)

lovin the ichiyanagi/ranta/kosugi improvisation 75 reissue on phoenix

Ward Fowler, Sunday, 24 January 2010 20:55 (fifteen years ago)

The final Yellow Swans album Going Places = major traet. Reminds me of prime Flying Saucer Attack without really sounding like it.

Ned Raggett, Saturday, 30 January 2010 17:49 (fifteen years ago)

Do you guys remember Psychic Ills? What ever happened to them?

26 Mixes Focaccia (Stevie D), Saturday, 30 January 2010 18:13 (fifteen years ago)

Psychic Ills were touring a few months ago, weren't they? I think that they're still active.

winnebago taco, Saturday, 30 January 2010 18:31 (fifteen years ago)

my estimation of the yellow swans disc has gone down several notches since i got it. when i first played it loud it sounded cool to me, but then i played it more thinking i was gonna write it up for my noise column and i was really underwhelmed. it never really goes anywhere exciting. its minimal in a lazy way. its like they arbitrarily just end the songs at a certain point cuz, um, they have to end eventually. definite shoegaze buzz and i can hear the fsa-ness of the sounds, but in the end, there are a zillion beedroom noize dudes who could do this kind of thing in their sleep. i ended up not writing about it. wrote about - among other things - a guy who calls himself Pus Drainer, who puts out way deeper, darker, and more psychedelic electronoize. and you won't be reading about him on Dusted website anytime soon.

scott seward, Saturday, 30 January 2010 18:54 (fifteen years ago)

that would be "bedroom". although i have heard some good "bee room" noise. and "bead room" noise has possibilities.

scott seward, Saturday, 30 January 2010 18:56 (fifteen years ago)

Mmm bee rooms. It's true that the album is one of many in the vein, but it's done very nicely to my ears, as if after all the 'are we chaotic or are we droney and nice' stuff they'd done in the past they decided to end on a reasonable fusion of the two.

Now this Pus Drainer feller sounds worthy.

Ned Raggett, Saturday, 30 January 2010 19:08 (fifteen years ago)

Woah, the new Yellow Swans on Type is blowing my mind this morning.

Barnaby, Hardly, Monday, 1 February 2010 10:51 (fifteen years ago)

I was extremely excited about the Grouper/Roy Montgomery split, though it proved pretty impossible to get on record. Does anyone know about new Roy Montgomery material?

HeckleNJekyll, Monday, 1 February 2010 11:17 (fifteen years ago)

I would love new Roy Montgomery! The track on that split seems to be a live version of an old track, which is a bit disappointing, but I didn't even know he was playing live any more, so that's good news. Seconding the request for more info.

Seems that Grouper/Montgomery split pretty much sold out on preorders from her mailing list. Would've liked one myself (not heard it - boomkat has mp3/flac version for sale which I may buy later). Still wish I'd managed to pick up the Grouper/City Center split 7".

(On a side grumble, Boomkat has it tagged as "dark ambient / drone / metal". Is post-Sunn doom's co-optation of the word "drone" now so complete that we have to pretend all previous forms of music known as "drone" are metal-related?)

canna kirk (a passing spacecadet), Monday, 1 February 2010 12:00 (fifteen years ago)

Anyone else heard the new Steve Gunn LP on Three Lobed? A lot better than the CD that came out on Digitalis awhile back, if you ask me. Serious jams.

Reason enough to follow the Aquarius Records twitter stream, they'll announce super limited editions before they hit the catalog updates. (that's how I got my copy)

I am merry that Scott likes the Type stuff. They're (well, he's -- it's a one man label run by a Brit named John) about to rerelease the early Thomas Köner albums, can't wait for those.

Very much a bummer about Camera Obscura, but Tony felt it was better to do that now than later given his health, and to wrap up everything as neatly as possible.

i have a punk show coming up next friday. great metal show in october.

i didn't go see the sunburned/major stars/rangda show the other night. i watched the kids so that maria could go. she had fun. she really liked wayne & kate. so much music coming up around here. TOO much almost.

we all had a great time at the vetiver show that my brother put on in hudson a couple weeks ago. maria and rufus and cyrus and i all went. out friend nina violet opened up and ARP also played. dug arp's action. posted this on the wdyll thread, but there was a picture in this sunday's new york times of me and my brother in law andy at the vetiver show. making me ilx beardo of the month, i believe.

Everything I've heard from Rene Hell so far has been really great. Porcelain Opera cd on type is some of the best stuff I've heard this year. Listening to the Rene Hell/Three Legged Race lp right now. I have a couple more coming in the mail. This guy really needs a dedicated thread. I'm pretty sure there are a few Rene Hell supporters on ilm.
