I think we've done this already. The answer is Head Down.

BTW, I'm frightfully middle-class (chap), Wednesday, 13 January 2010 01:04 (sixteen years ago)

my gut says "Fell on Black Days" but going to blast this in my car before voting.

Bee OK, Wednesday, 13 January 2010 01:04 (sixteen years ago)

damn it we have done it, only searched "Soundgarden"

sorry about that.

Bee OK, Wednesday, 13 January 2010 01:09 (sixteen years ago)

Lots of great songs to choose from, but My Wave is the best. Song has such a great vibe to it.

Moodles, Wednesday, 13 January 2010 01:59 (sixteen years ago)

my wave

First it steals your mind and then it steals your... your POLL: SUPERUNKNOWN

all yoga attacks are fire based (rogermexico.), Wednesday, 13 January 2010 02:33 (sixteen years ago)

Man, I hope I voted for 4th of July. Also a huge fan of Like Suicide, great guitar solo.

no She Likes Surprises?

shart in a bag, light it on fire (stevie), Wednesday, 13 January 2010 14:44 (sixteen years ago)

this album is pretty faultless actually but imma play wildcard and say 'head down'

shart in a bag, light it on fire (stevie), Wednesday, 13 January 2010 14:45 (sixteen years ago)

no She Likes Surprises?

It wasn't on the US edition. But since I'm a European it counts for me (admittedly it is a bit jarring coming after Like Suicide, but it's good to have a rock-out to lift the mood after a song like that).

MAILMAN

m the g, Wednesday, 13 January 2010 15:02 (sixteen years ago)

imo hands down the best alt-rock blockbuster of the '90s...lotta songs to choose from but today I'm going with "Fresh Tendrils"

some dude, Wednesday, 13 January 2010 15:22 (sixteen years ago)

yeah any day of the week my answer would probably be totally different

shart in a bag, light it on fire (stevie), Wednesday, 13 January 2010 15:26 (sixteen years ago)

matt cameron fucking owns this record too. one of the greatest, that dude.

shart in a bag, light it on fire (stevie), Wednesday, 13 January 2010 15:26 (sixteen years ago)

ah MAN i have to choose between head down and limo wreck AGAIN christ guys

AND the day i tried to live, fuck

"arguably, their best album?"

isnt that Badmotherfinger?

Zeno, Wednesday, 13 January 2010 15:31 (sixteen years ago)

badmotorfinger is very good imo but this is that album in 3-D

Do the english boil pizza? (acoleuthic), Wednesday, 13 January 2010 15:31 (sixteen years ago)

ljagz v much OTM here ^^^^^

shart in a bag, light it on fire (stevie), Wednesday, 13 January 2010 15:34 (sixteen years ago)

nothing as heavy as jesus christ pose or moving as mind riot, but this is SG's blockbuster record

shart in a bag, light it on fire (stevie), Wednesday, 13 January 2010 15:35 (sixteen years ago)

and also more accessible, not always in a good way.

xxpost

Zeno, Wednesday, 13 January 2010 15:36 (sixteen years ago)

would still place badmotorfinger above this one, tbh. heavier, dirtier, less streamlined.

m the g, Wednesday, 13 January 2010 15:37 (sixteen years ago)

y'know i thought so when it came out but now i think, of all those major label grunge albums, superunknown did 'becoming more accessible' with more grace and invention than any of their peers

shart in a bag, light it on fire (stevie), Wednesday, 13 January 2010 15:37 (sixteen years ago)

like suicide might be as moving as mind riot in its own heroically cheesy way, and limo wreck is...wrought in the best possible way

fourth of july is as heavy as jesus christ pose btw, although maybe not as heavy as slaves and bulldozers ;)

Do the english boil pizza? (acoleuthic), Wednesday, 13 January 2010 15:37 (sixteen years ago)

lovelovelove all the heaviosity on superunknown louis, but jesusXpose seriously scared the living shit out of me when i bought the etched 12" at age sixteen (my first SG purchase) and can still give me the willies now more than any SG other than perhaps 'far beyond the wheel'

shart in a bag, light it on fire (stevie), Wednesday, 13 January 2010 15:38 (sixteen years ago)

it has a skeletal psych skronk spook that still chills

shart in a bag, light it on fire (stevie), Wednesday, 13 January 2010 15:39 (sixteen years ago)

JCP is monstrous, yeah. For some reason 'Somewhere' was always my favourite on that album but sense has struck since and Mind Riot, JCP and SAB stand above all. 'Somewhere' is still one of their better pop tracks, although 'Pretty Noose' of course wins that particular battle with ease.

Do the english boil pizza? (acoleuthic), Wednesday, 13 January 2010 15:42 (sixteen years ago)

This record blew my mind when it came out. The Day I Tried To Live has always been my favorite.

Down On The Upside is a good record too, although one of the most blatant examples of a CD being too damn long. There's an excellent 45 minute record in there.

kornrulez6969, Wednesday, 13 January 2010 15:45 (sixteen years ago)

'somewhere' is crazy - yeah its one of the poppiest songs on the album, but its also crazy prog, has weird time-signatures, tempo-changes, bizarro structures, false-ending, etc... i'd love to think their forthcoming reunion might deliver another great soundgarden album, though chris's work since suggests not, and in truth i really don't want matt leaving pearl jam.

shart in a bag, light it on fire (stevie), Wednesday, 13 January 2010 15:46 (sixteen years ago)

haha I just put Somewhere on for the first time in maybe years and it rocked ass, still would smash those other 3 tracks just ahead of it. Chris was never the main songwriter, was he? Wasn't it Kim?

Do the english boil pizza? (acoleuthic), Wednesday, 13 January 2010 15:49 (sixteen years ago)

Cornell wrote most of the band's lyrics and probably about half of the music, but they were a pretty collaborative band overall, everyone got writing credits here and there

some dude, Wednesday, 13 January 2010 15:51 (sixteen years ago)

i think they all took whacks at songwriting... isn't 'heads down' by ben shepherd? i always think matt's songs for pearl jam have a particularly soundgarden-esque payfulness when it comes to his choice of chords. xpost

shart in a bag, light it on fire (stevie), Wednesday, 13 January 2010 15:52 (sixteen years ago)

Originally it was Cornell and Hiro Yamamoto. When Hiro left to form Truly when Soundgarden "sold out" in 1990 (signed to A&M, opened for Guns N Roses), Cornell took over.

┌∩┐(◕_◕)┌∩┐ (Steve Shasta), Wednesday, 13 January 2010 15:53 (sixteen years ago)

yeah Shepherd wrote all of "Somewhere," "Head Down," "Half," and "An Unkind," really dug his tunes

some dude, Wednesday, 13 January 2010 15:54 (sixteen years ago)

it should be noted that their version of 'into the void' absolutely shreds

shart in a bag, light it on fire (stevie), Wednesday, 13 January 2010 15:54 (sixteen years ago)

yeah, Ben Shepherd had a higher awesome-song ratio than most songwriters ever ;)

Do the english boil pizza? (acoleuthic), Wednesday, 13 January 2010 15:58 (sixteen years ago)

eh if you actually look at the credits on the early records, there's 20 Cornell songwriting credits, 10 Yamamato credits, and 11 Thayil (xpost)

some dude, Wednesday, 13 January 2010 15:58 (sixteen years ago)

you should check out hater, ben and matt's side-project... weird garage-pop thing.

shart in a bag, light it on fire (stevie), Wednesday, 13 January 2010 15:59 (sixteen years ago)

I'm gonna be lonely repping for Kickstand, but I've used it on so many mixtapes over the years—perfect length, great riff, dumb lyrics but whattaya gonna do?

Giorgio Marauder (I eat cannibals), Wednesday, 13 January 2010 16:06 (sixteen years ago)

when Soundgarden "sold out" in 1990

I was under the impression that they'd signed with A&M even before their debut came out on SST in 1988.

wronger than 100 geir posts (MacDara), Wednesday, 13 January 2010 23:18 (sixteen years ago)

iirc this album released on the same day as The Downward Spiral. I went up to the record store with a few friends to buy them both, and we had this ongoing argument for the next year about which album was better. I chose Downward Spiral at the time, and was so annoyed by the debate that I never really got into this. In retrospect this album was better, even with Black Hole Sun and Spoonman. The Day I Tried to Live should have been the huge hit off this imo.

I voted for Limo Wreck.

richie aprile (rockapads), Thursday, 14 January 2010 00:23 (sixteen years ago)

I remember buying this and Downward Spiral on the same day too, now you mention it. I think I'd come down on the side of TDS over this (definitely would've back in the day), though they're not really that comparable.

BTW, I'm frightfully middle-class (chap), Thursday, 14 January 2010 00:27 (sixteen years ago)

4th of July, Head Down, Mailman, The Day I Tried to Live, Limo Wreck = 5 way tie for first-place.

NU SHOOZ! (Drugs A. Money), Thursday, 14 January 2010 14:00 (sixteen years ago)

j/k...4th of July will always reign supreme ;)

NU SHOOZ! (Drugs A. Money), Thursday, 14 January 2010 14:00 (sixteen years ago)

actually, looking now I think I posted exactly the same thing on the previous Superunknown poll thread...

recycling small-talk is surely a sign of mental illness, right?

NU SHOOZ! (Drugs A. Money), Thursday, 14 January 2010 14:05 (sixteen years ago)

Automatic thread bump. This poll is closing tomorrow.

way less love for "Black Hole Sun" than last time is almost enough to justify this thread's existence

HOTT LUNCH II HARDEEZ (some dude), Monday, 18 January 2010 04:03 (sixteen years ago)

ppl not be lovin' 7-minute epic guitar ballads - they r unsophisticated and stupid obv - shame, because like suicide is massively awesome

forgot to vote, still stuck between HD, TDITTL and LW
