just in terms of who has the most songs on my list of fav singles of the decade, it would look something like:
Neptunes > Timbaland > Kanye > Lil Jon > Bryan-Michael Cox > Dr Luke > Stargate > will.i.am > Jermaine Dupri > Scott Storch

although obviously there are other producers I'd rank in there too, and if I just did the ranking based on gut I would move around a few spots, definitely put Dr. Luke higher and Lil Jon lower at least

some dude, Friday, 15 January 2010 07:37 (sixteen years ago)

surprised myself a little by voting lil jon, but it felt good. he was the most persuasive ambassador of don't-give-a-fuck in a decade that needed it.

hellzapoppa (tipsy mothra), Friday, 15 January 2010 08:02 (sixteen years ago)

I guess I understand that, but he had such a brief little window of ubiquity from '03 to '05, whereas most of these guys were making hits for half the decade or more.

some dude, Friday, 15 January 2010 13:16 (sixteen years ago)

i know. but none of the other ones make me happier-per-song (HPS, an important statistical metric).

hellzapoppa (tipsy mothra), Friday, 15 January 2010 13:53 (sixteen years ago)

also sort of surprised not to see t-pain there, but i guess i'm conflating his productions with his guest spots.

hellzapoppa (tipsy mothra), Friday, 15 January 2010 13:55 (sixteen years ago)

yeah he produced a lot of his big hits, but not nearly all of them, plus he peaked pretty late in the decade (then again, so did Stargate, but they totally saturated the charts without being nearly as recognizable about it)

Ha! I love you, tipsy! :)

Kevin John Bozelka, Friday, 15 January 2010 15:53 (sixteen years ago)

jon has been under the radar relatively since that period where he was fukkin everywhere, but he's been steadily still making songs even if his album has been delayed like 4 years

guess it depends if u like pitbull tho

u don't have 2 be a shart, baby, 2 be in my jort (m bison), Friday, 15 January 2010 17:32 (sixteen years ago)

i like Pitbull but he hasn't had any really great songs w/ Lil Jon since his first album

some dude, Friday, 15 January 2010 17:40 (sixteen years ago)

yeah i'm not wild about any of those pitbull tracks except the anthem, but 'dat baby' is the jams

u don't have 2 be a shart, baby, 2 be in my jort (m bison), Friday, 15 January 2010 17:50 (sixteen years ago)

shiiiiiiiit i didn't know jon did "i know you want me". good for him.

obv voted neptunes here, staggering amount of 10/10 classic tracks across rap & r&b

J0rdan S., Friday, 15 January 2010 18:30 (sixteen years ago)

surprise surprise. timbo should have won by more tho imo

guardian nagle (k3vin k.), Wednesday, 20 January 2010 00:04 (sixteen years ago)

Timbo's peak straddled decades, but the Neptunes' best shit was all in the '00s and was imo at least slightly more plentiful.

voting Lil Jon is a big challop imo.

The Titi Hendricks Experience (some dude), Wednesday, 20 January 2010 00:15 (sixteen years ago)

Yeah the only pre-00 songs The Neptunes had worth remembering are "Got Your Money", "Superthug" and (scraping in at the end of 1999) "Caught Out There", but then 2000-2002 was straight fire beautiful for them.

The rapidity of their drop in quality thereafter (though there's a sprinkling of great tracks in 2003-2004) was quite startling though. It wasn't like the were merely superseded.

Tim F, Wednesday, 20 January 2010 00:19 (sixteen years ago)

i think one thing that timbo has over the neptunes is the fact that he made a bunch of great fully-formed albums w/ artists in the 200s -- missy albums, fs/ls, bubba sparxx etc -- i don't think the neptunes artist albums -- kelis, clipse -- are as good

challop: neptunes deserved this for their two shake ya ass & danger alone

challop #2: justin + neptunes > justin + timbo

J0rdan S., Wednesday, 20 January 2010 00:22 (sixteen years ago)

n.e.r.d. > shock value(s), tho

J0rdan S., Wednesday, 20 January 2010 00:23 (sixteen years ago)

how about this: if you could take only one year by one producer/producing team on this list (i.e. neptunes in 2000, timbo in 2001, lil jon in 2002 or whatever it may be) who/which year would you pick?

J0rdan S., Wednesday, 20 January 2010 00:25 (sixteen years ago)

if you ask me Tim's drop in quality after '03 or so is about a precipitous as Neptunes', although I know that's somewhat a minority opinion -- "My Love" is pretty much the only hit of his from the last few years in my end of decade list

some dude, Wednesday, 20 January 2010 00:26 (sixteen years ago)

for me prolly Neptunes in '01 or Kanye in '03

some dude, Wednesday, 20 January 2010 00:26 (sixteen years ago)

my prelim choice would be neptunes in 2002

you get

- n.e.r.d. album
- lord willin album
- usher - u don't have to call
- nore - nothin (and other assorted tracks from the album)
- nelly - hot in herre
- ll cool j - luv u better (classic loverman joint imo)
- jt - seniorita/like i love you/ rock your body + other assorted 'justified' joints
- baby/clipse - what happened to that boy
- snoop - beautiful

you could desert island me w/ that right now

J0rdan S., Wednesday, 20 January 2010 00:29 (sixteen years ago)

yeah "Luv U Better" is killer

some dude, Wednesday, 20 January 2010 00:34 (sixteen years ago)

I think of N.E.R.D. as a 2001 album but otherwise i agree w/ jordan.

Timbaland's 2001 was decent - but I think this is probably the best of his 00 years:

Miss E... So Addictive
Most of the best bits of Dark Days, Bright Nights
"We Need A Resolution" / "More Than A Woman" / "I Care 4 U"
"Raise Up" and some other choice Petey Pablo joints
"Hola Hovito"
Timbaland & Magoo - "Roll Out" and "Drop"

Tim F, Wednesday, 20 January 2010 01:19 (sixteen years ago)

Al, I guess I meant more that The Neptunes seemed to fall off right on the heels of their ubiquitous peak. I think the only stuff from 2003 onwards that I really love are "Milkshake" (which actually emerged in late 2002 I think?) and the Snoop singles, though maybe I'm forgetting something obvious.

By 2002, despite some awesome stuff (e.g. "Oops Oh My", most of Under Construction), Timbaland already felt sorta "autumnal", so it wasn't surprising that so much of his stuff from 2003 onwards was drab (though let's not forget Deliverance).
